With the summer heat gone and the beautiful, late fall weather here in the mid-south, it’s a great time of year to come to Memphis to experience the infamous Beale Street. Some call Beale Street a “mini Bourbon Street” and for good reason: just as in NOLA, you can meander up and down Beale Street with a libation in hand, enjoying live music wafting into the street from it’s many restaurants, clubs and bars. Or just sit back in a lawn chair at W.C. Handy Park at the center of Beale Street and listen to any of the live bands playing on stage throughout the day. Beale Street is home of the blues, the birthplace of rock n’ roll, known for its world famous BBQ, full of history and offers first class entertainment. Don’t take my word for it — take a trip to Memphis now for a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

Business travelers rarely have the time or inclination to shop, but frequent travelers to Europe know it’s the perfect time of year to make an exception. All throughout Europe, charming and quirky “Christmas markets” pop up outdoors in town squares and parks. The offerings vary from market to market, of course, but savvy frequent flyers will find bargains everywhere: tree ornaments, local jewelry and crafts, stocking stuffers, small pieces of furniture, and even specialty foods and fashions. One example: Several years ago, at a Christmas market in Cracow, Poland, I purchased four exquisite glass ornaments in a rustic wooden box for about $10. The same item was offered by a major U.S. retailer for $85.

The wonder of Christmas on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile

One of the best holiday vacations in memory was the time I took my daughters Christmas shopping in Chicago at  American Girl Store on the Magnificent Mile. Not only did we stay at one of the finest Chicago hotels and shop some of city’s most incredible stores, this dad got to share in a uniquely “girl experience” with two of the most special ladies in his life. So what if I broke the bank a bit on clothes and tea for dolls? To my girls, I was a rockstar dad with a new appreciation for dolls (just don’t tell my poker buddies).

The fact is, I’ve always had trouble Christmas shopping. These days with everything just a mouse click away, it should be easy enough to find what you need — but too much choice can scramble the brain. So it was a stroke of genius to decide to take my girls straight to the source (and their own version of heaven) to let them choose their own Christmas gifts.

Philly for perfect weekend getaways

Stay at the Palomar Philadelphia in Philly's Rittenhouse Square.

By Vince Font

I have to admit to a nerdish love of the “Rocky” movies, and an equal fascination with the famous steps that lead up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. So when the opportunity came for me to visit the City of Brotherly Love by escorting my wife to Philadelphia’s “Perfect 10” girlfriend getaway held on 10/10/10 (she assured me that married couples were also allowed), I couldn’t pass it up. I wasn’t an expert on Philadelphia hotels, but I’d had my fair share of luck finding some really fabulous hotels for weekend getaways.

With the holiday season swinging into full gear, a group of big-hearted travel bloggers is undertaking its own gift-giving spree — one that’s intended to make the world a better place. Passports with Purpose is an annual event that’s part charitable fundraiser, part online raffle. Proceeds from this year’s Passports with Purpose will go toward building a village in southern India in partnership with LAFTI, a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of India’s caste of dalits, also commonly referred to as “untouchables.”
