New Las Vegas shows keep the Strip singing

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

By E.C. Gladstone

Many critics and observers, like sharks smelling blood in the water, have feasted upon the bad news of shows closing in Las Vegas during the current economic downturn. What they’ve failed to report is that at least as many — if not more! — new shows and entertainers have rushed in to fill the theatres and showrooms in our Las Vegas hotels, while others have moved to bigger, better venues with new and improved performances. Just to name a few…

Las Vegas Hotels Terry Fator, Mirage

With a slick talk show-style stage, hip DJ and tight band, the America’s Got Talent winner is as on-the-money as possible. Since his stint at the Las Vegas Hilton, Fator has added new puppet characters (like a Cougar and a Beatle) to his already solid cast, and more stunning musical voices like James Blunt and Brooks & Dunn. Approaching conservatives and liberals, old and young alike, Fator simply represents Vegas entertainment at its best. Who ever thought ventriloquism would be hot?

Trent Carlini’s Elvolution, Planet Hollywood

Elvis tributes are practically a requirement in Sin City, but the concept has long since passed self-parody. But Trent Carlini — winner of ABC-TV’s “Next Big Thing” — gets closer to the real thing than anyone you’ve likely ever seen, surveying all eras of EAP’s career (even the dubious ones) with amiable appreciation, an eye for detail, and a self-aware sense of humor. Still, I wanted him to worry less about costume changes and focus more on delivering Presley’s best.

American drops Dallas/Love flights

LOVE FEST

American Airlines Drops Dallas/Love Service–Again: Business travelers have lost count of the number of times the bosses at Dallas/Fort Worth-based American Airlines have launched flights at Dallas/Love Field. Whenever a competitive threat appears at Love Field, American begins flying inexpensive, competitive service. And as soon as the threat disappears, so does American. But this time American ran into Love-based Southwest Airlines, a competitor it couldn't push around. After a change in the Wright Amendment permitted Southwest to fly to new cities from Love in 2006, American piled in, too, launching flights to Chicago/O'Hare, Kansas City and St. Louis. The St. Louis and Kansas City flights disappeared almost immediately. American has now announced that it'll drop the O'Hare service on June 11. But don't worry, American says it'll be back at Love in 2013, when a new terminal is due for completion.

iPhone games to keep kids busy on the road

IPhone By Sam Chapnick

Got a kid, an iPhone and a family vacation planned?

These are our family's favorite iPhone games for keeping kids amused on the road (we love them all, they are not in order of love):

I'm excluding any social media or games requiring an Internet connection.

All Ages:

Sketchr: Basically etch-a-sketch for the iPhone. At first it is a bit awkward to tilt the iPhone to get it to draw, but after learning to move it gently, this is a blast! Especially for nostalgic Gen Xers. Ahem…

Subway Lite: Another one of my absolute favorites, this taps into several developmental skills while still being fun and challenging for all ages — including adults. Like a slide puzzle, the goal is to try to get the subway car "home" by moving it along the track blocked by other vehicles.

Free PicPu: "A slide puzzle, oh I'm too old for those." That was my initial thought until I played this game. Using real photographs instead of drawings, it's hard to figure out exactly what goes where while getting them strategically into place. A great one to while away a delay in the airport or on the runway.

United plane By Joe Brancatelli

AIRPORT REPORT

New Routes, New Clubs, New Troubles for Clear: Delta Air Lines is resuming some intra-Florida flights it dropped last year. Thanks to a $1.5 million subsidy from Florida taxpayers, Delta's commuter operation will fly daily service from the state capital of Tallahassee to Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. The nonstop routes, using 32-seat turboprops, resumed April 1. … The commuter operation of United Airlines is adding two new routes from Chicago/O'Hare. Beginning June 4, there will be daily flights from ORD to Bismarck, North Dakota, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. … Priority Pass, the membership plan that allows travelers to access 600 airport clubs worldwide, has added a slew of new lounges. Among the new facilities: the Relax Lounge at LAX; lounges in Toronto/Pearson, Gothenburg, Sweden, and Manchester, England; eight TAM Airlines clubs in Brazil; a lounge in Chennai, India; three lounges in Indonesia; two clubs in South Africa; and two clubs in Vietnam. … Clear members take note: The troubled airport security "line cut" program has begun slashing operating hours at some of its lanes. Check the Clear Web site before assuming any facility is open at any airport.

Vail resort offers luxury, location for ski vacation

Skivacation By Kate Schwartz

The last week of ski season, I took a ski vacation at the Vail Mountain Lodge, and must say that I was very impressed.

Maybe it was the oversized plush robes that became a staple in my wardrobe. It could have been the free hot chocolate (with marshmallows) and hot cider that greeted me after a long day of snowboarding. Or, perhaps it was the immaculate ninja-like cleaning staff that somehow managed to straighten my room and leave a treat on my bed every time I turned around.

Whatever it was, the Vail Mountain Lodge proved to be everything I expected from a 4-star hotel plus much more.

The location is breathtaking too — and not just because it’s 8,000 feet above sea level. The Vail Mountain Lodge sits along the picturesque cobblestone streets of Vail Village and provides stunning views of the Rockies. As an extra convenience for travelers on ski vacations, It’s a mere minute from the Vista Bahn (the main ski lift in Vail Village) and offers ski-in-ski-out accommodations complete with valet ski and snowboard service.

The hotel boasts a new full-service spa, workout facility, and outdoor aquatic playground (read: hot tubs, pools and a waterfall), so when I wasn’t on the slopes, I was in the lap of luxury.

RV family vacation leaves miles of memories

RV By Mary Flynn

Our Florida-based family has been on four RV trips extending as far north as Upstate New York and as far west as Arizona. After traveling thousands of miles piled in an RV, I finally feel as if I have a better handle on traveling with the kids on these trips.

When I first planned our two-week RV family vacation, I was a bit nervous about how to keep the kids entertained during the long drive. My kids get bored fast, so I wanted to be sure they had plenty of activities to occupy their time. When asked what items they wanted to bring on the trip, their first answer was friends. After explaining that this was a family vacation, we decided to go to the store and shop around.

When we arrived at the store, I was amazed to find road trip activity kits for kids of all ages. I bought several kits for ages 4-6 which were filled with fun items such as  “Old Maid,” crayons, activity books, small toys and more. After choosing games, I took the kids to with me to pick out snacks and food. T create excitement and ownership, we also asked the kids to each choose two places they wanted to visit on our selected route.

And dog makes 5

On our first family vacation we traveled from Orlando, FL to Lakewood, NY. We rented an RV that slept 6, had a bathroom, kitchen table, a DVD player (just in case), a bed and 2 pull outs that turned into room for 4. There were five of us in the RV — me, my husband, our two 5-year-old children and the family dog. We left at 4 a.m. and after one round of “are we there yet?” the kids were fast asleep. By the time they woke up we had already been on the road for 5 hours and were already out of the state.

After the kids awoke, we stopped and ate breakfast in the RV to see how they were going to adapt. Turns out  they loved it. During the trip we stopped every couple of hours so that the kids could run around a bit.  We sang songs, played games, and talked about things that my husband and I did when we were kids on our family vacations. (They were actually very interested in our experiences.) During the two weeks, we spent only three nights in hotels and the rest at camping grounds. As it turns out, campgrounds are great places to meet and play with children of other travelers.

My kids still talk about that first family vacation, although we have taken three more since then. As the years go by, the trips are still as much fun, but the activities change. Hand-held game systems have replaced coloring books, but we never drifted away from singing songs, playing games and talking about our childhood travel memories. The kids are now nine, and the RV trips have become an essential part of family bonding. It amazes me how much you can learn about your kids and yourself when you spend quality time together. I truly can’t wait 'til we can RV again.

Discovering the Southwest & sense of adventure

Family-vacation By Chris Hill

Nearly every summer growing up, we would take a family vacation — a 12-hour road trip from New Mexico to the beaches of California to visit family. After spending time with relatives, my father would look at a map and take a road he had never been on just to see what was there. My father loved to drive and explore, which led us to state parks, national parks, and Native American ruins throughout New Mexico, Arizona and California. As I got older, I truly grew to enjoy this portion of the trip even more than our time at the beach.

On one family vacation, we focused on Native American dwellings and museums throughout Arizona. I vividly remember the Montezuma Castle National Monument, north of Phoenix. Driving to the site, we talked about the Native Americans in the area, how they settled and how they lived. Once we arrived, we were able to get out and see this magnificent site built on the side of a cliff. The experience created such excitement that we wanted to see more.

So we started our trip through the state, stopping at every site we found on the map — some right off the highway and some way back off the main road. After a while, Mom stopped doing the hikes with us and stayed back with some of the kids. But myself, my dad and my brother would make the hike every time to see the ruins and read about the history of the area.

During the long drives between sites, I was entertained by my father’s homemade “mobile entertainment unit” — a generator attached to the back of the camp trailer and an extension cord run through the back window of the van connected to our TV/VCR combo. Although it cannot rival today’s technology of iPods, portable DVD players, and satellite radio, it served as great entertainment as we searched for the next adventure.

I am now grown with kids of my own, yet I still look back fondly on these summer family vacations. Although my kids are too young — and would not truly appreciate this sort of trip — I still look forward to taking them someday. Like my father, I believe it is important to have a sense of adventure and be prepared to find something new. I also believe that with patience, you can find some truly unique views of this country, taking in its beauty and rich history.

Las Vegas hotels: Top 10 spas

Las vegas hotel By E.C. Gladstone

Planning to include a massage in your Las Vegas hotel visit? You may be surprised by the size, scope and service level now being offered in Sin City spas. In fact, the field keeps getting more and more crowded with properties promoting lavish environments and exotic treatments both on and off the Strip. Separating the best from the rest still isn’t difficult, but ranking the very top facilities becomes challenging — each has some unique features that are hard to compare. In the end, among these, your preferences may weigh your own favorite. Here’s my countdown:

10) The Bathhouse, THEHotel**

The experience here begins from the moment of entry when you are greeted by a soothing coconut/jasmine fragrance. Futuristically sleek and austere throughout, the sensory-soothing design theme features rock beds and walls and opaque glass nearly everywhere in the bento box-like, easily navigable spa area, including around the showers, small steam and sauna, and extra deep hot spa tub and cold plunge. Aquage products in locker room. Keypad lockers, amazing chenille robes. Very well staffed. Retail offers serious product lines like Peter Thomas Roth. jewelry, candles, makeup and more.

I experienced THEultimate massage, incorporating Swedish massage, a scalp treatment and some lymphatic, and the Fire & Ice river rocks (“from the same family”), using safflower and grapeseed oils.

Delta changes some international flights

Delta
By Joe Brancatelli

ROUTE MAP

Delta Will Draw Down Some International Service: From the moment it declared bankruptcy in 2005, Delta Air Lines began shifting massive amounts of capacity to international routes. It has launched dozens of logical routes and almost as many insane ones. Most recent entry in the insane ledger: three weekly flights between its Atlanta hub and Brasilia, Brazil, scheduled to begin on December 11. With its recent merger partner, Northwest Airlines, Delta's operations are now 40 percent overseas. But the worsening economy is finally catching up with Delta's international plans. Starting in September, Delta will drop 10 percent of its overseas service. Although it has yet to offer details, watch for the airline to eliminate marginal routes, thin out frequencies on some of its most heavily serviced routes and switch to seasonal service on routes that can't support year-round service. Meanwhile, however, Delta continues its open up new international increase in New York City. Effective May 22, it will add daily New York/LaGuardia-Bermuda service. A month later, it will add flights between Kennedy and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Orbitz Hotel Total Price: Big Day for Online Travel

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Barney_Harford By Barney Harford, President & CEO of Orbitz Worldwide

Big day today. At Orbitz.com we just announced the launch of Total Price hotel search results, making it dramatically easier for consumers to search for hotels.

Until today, there was no convenient way for consumers to compare multiple hotels on a Total Price basis. Consumers had to click through to the hotel details page for each hotel to see how much it would cost to book.

With Total Price hotel search results Orbitz is changing that, and making the world a better place. As of today, we’ll be showing you the base rate, taxes & fees and Total Price per night upfront on the initial search results page.

And that’s not all. We’ve also dramatically cut booking fees on all of our hotels around the world for bookings made by July 15. Of course, lower booking fees mean a lower Total Price. We’re daring you to compare the Orbitz Total Price before booking your hotel anywhere else.

This comes on the heels of the recent launch of our "Biggest Hotel Sale Ever," featuring discounts of 30% or more at thousands of properties worldwide through May 31.

Are you kidding? There’s really never been a better time to travel. So get busy, get booking!
