What you can expect
A giant Buddha perched above a serene monastery, a fishing village built on stilts over quiet canals—Lantau Island feels a world away from the bustle of Hong Kong. Escape to this historic isle by coach and make your way to the Tian Tan Buddha, cruise the waterways of Tai O, and linger over lunch.
After being picked up in Hong Kong, take a coach to Lantau Island. Take cable car to the mountain top, you do not need to climb 268 steps. You can take free shuttle bus to begin your journey by admiring the world's largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha. Take in 360-degree views of the island's forested hillsides and blue-green water as you soar toward the towering 112-foot (34-m) statue.
The imposing—but kind-looking—Tian Tan Buddha appears to welcome you. Spend some free time reflecting or stroll through the museum underneath the Buddha at your own pace before lunch. Nearby, the Po Lin Monastery’s lush, colorful gardens catch your attention, as do the delicious smells coming from its restaurant. Sit down to taste the traditional flavors of China's vegetarian cuisine before making your way to the waterfront for the final portion of your tour.
Board a charming boat for a cruise through Tai O, a fascinating, old-fashioned fishing village built on stilts that stretch out over the surface of a protected inlet. Salty smells fill the air as you glide around precariously perched stilt houses and soak up an age-old way of life.
