The city of Whangarei is one of the largest cities in northern New Zealand, and it provides travelers with a variety of different scenic areas including the Whangarei Falls Scenic Reserve, the Pukenui Forest and the Hatea River. There is also a marine reserve where you'll learn about the aquatic wildlife from the area, or you can go to the Kingdom of Zion, which is a privately owned zoo on Gray Road.

Attractions

The Kingdom of Zion Zoo is located north of the Pukenai Forest. This zoo is home to some of the biggest cats in the world, which includes lions, tigers, cheetahs and panthers. At the Whangarei Quarry Gardens, visitors are treated to a subtropical oasis that is maintained by local volunteers. The subtropical climate of the area allows beautiful plant life to grow throughout the year, so you'll be able to visit at any time and see thousands of trees, figs and flowers. Whangarei is also the home to the Claphams National Clock museum, which houses clocks that date back as far as the 18th century.

Hints and tips

When you fly to Whangarei Airport (WRE), you'll be right on the coast of the city. The airport connects to the city from Church Street as well as Onerahi Road, which can be accessed by taxi or bus. Each year in January, the city hosts the Waipu Highland Games as well as the Artisans Fair.
