Fly to Tashkent International Airport
Tashkent is about as central as Central Asian destinations get, sandwiched between Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
It's possible to fly direct to Tashkent Airport from some European hubs, including Frankfurt, London, Rome and Paris. Tel Aviv, Singapore and Istanbul are also options, and there are of course many direct flights from other Central Asian and Russian cities. The airport is just a few minutes by car south-east of the city center.
Experience Tashkent
The capital of Uzbekistan has been conquered by many over the centuries, including, most notably, by Genghis Khan, but since independence in 1991 this former Silk Road staging post has developed and modernized with increasing success.
The Old Town is your best chance of seeing what remains of Tashkent's history, much of which was lost in an earthquake in 1966. The narrow alleyways are full of atmosphere and offer shade in the warm summers - temperatures often climb into the 90's from June to August.
There's a wealth of Islamic history here, including the oldest surviving Koran, which is housed at the Tellya Sheikh Mosque.
There's also an excellent selection of museums, including the national Fine Arts Museum (Movarounahr 16) which is home to a collection of regional artworks that spans 1500 years.
