Anyone wishing to experience the Antilles, a string of volcanic islands in the southern Caribbean, should fly to Pointe-a-Pitre International Airport (PTP). The largest city in Guadeloupe, an island centrally located in the island chain, Pointe-a-Pitre is a bustling, exotic seaport from which visitors can begin to immerse themselves in the unique culture of these islands.
Pointe-a-Pitre is proud of its place in literary history as the home of Nobel Prize winning writer Alexis Saint-Leger. The Museum Saint John Perse honors this artist and was built in an elaborate Creole-colonial style. To experience the seaside culture of this island, a trip to nearby Gosier is recommended. The commune s clear blue waters and swaying palm trees impart a sense of the islands' tranquility. Foodies have a ton of options in this paradise. A tour of the eastern half of the island offers a glimpse of active sugarcane plantations, and a trip to the western areas provides a chance to see banana farmers at work.
The weather in Pointe-a-Pitre is tropical, with average year-round highs in the upper 80s. When you fly to Pointe-a-Pitre International Airport (PTP), it is helpful to arrange for a rental car ahead of time. City buses are available to some destinations, and most major hotels offer airport shuttles as well.
