Iquitos is no jungle clearing though - it's a city of over 400,000 people, with sophisticated nightlife and colonial architecture. It was planted in the Amazon basin by the Spanish, though the indigenous people lived in the area for thousands of years before the missionaries arrived.
Today, one of the highlights of a trip to Iquitos is experiencing the Belen market early in the morning, when the fruits of the jungle are traded by canoe among the stilted huts along the riverbank.
Getting around
After you fly to Iquitos Airport (IQT), you ll be just 15 minutes by road from from Lima and Panama City, as well as Cochabamba in Bolivia.
