Stunning 4 star cottage near Montignac with large private pool & WIFI.
In a sought after location in the Périgord Noir, considered to be the most beautiful region in France and is famous for its numerous châteaux, pre-history sites and outstanding cuisine, is this charming, recently restored period stone cottage. The cottage, which has stunning original features, all contemporary fixtures and fittings to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay and a large, private swimming pool (11 x 5 metres) offering guests peace and privacy, has been awarded 4 stars, the highest star rating for self-catering holiday accommodation, as well as a 'diplôme de Grand Ambassadeur' for the quality of the cottage and the welcome and service provided to guests by its owners.
It is set within the spacious, leafy grounds of a 17th Century manor "Le Tribunal de Losse" which was formerly the courthouse for the nearby Château de Losse, and was previously the Gatekeeper's cottage. The cottage and the manor are constructed in the local golden limestone with traditional stone-tiled 'lauze' roofs and stone window surrounds, typical of the old local architecture. They are set in 1.5 hectares of land with trees and flowering shrubs and lovely shady areas for outdoor dining with lovely views of the surrounding tree-lined hillside. The cottage benefits from a private 11 x 5 metre swimming pool offering guests peace, privacy and a sense of wellbeing.
For 2 people only, the cottage is tastefully decorated and furnished, and equipped to a high standard and offers 2 charming bedrooms, (1 double and 1 single) with lovely oak floors and beams, ideal for a couple or 2 friends travelling together. There are 2 spacious modern shower rooms, a handmade fully fitted kitchen with dining area and a charming and comfortable living area with stone fireplace fitted with wood burning stove. TV/DVD (UK channels) and WIFI are offered and for those dreaming of lounging by the pool with a book, a large selection is available. The garden offers delightful shady areas for outdoor dining and lovely views of the surrounding tree-lined hillside.
The village, is on the bank of the Vézère river and is a few minutes away on foot. It has a grocery store where fresh bread can be bought daily and a boutique selling traditional local specialities. And for those who don't feel like cooking and don't want to drive home after eating out, there are also a pizzeria, a restaurant serving traditional regional food in its delightful shady garden and a hotel restaurant on the banks of the river.
The village which with its 3 châteaux featured on the 2017 Tour de France, is in the heart of the Vézère valley, the cradle of civilization in Europe, habitat of Neanderthal then Cro-Magnon man and world famous for its prehistoric sites and decorated caves. It lies between Montignac and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac , home to the National Prehistory Museum and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The entire valley is peppered with ancient caves, their walls decorated with fabulous artistically and historically significant wall paintings. The most important is just a few minutes away in Montigac whose Lascaux caves are considered to be "the Sistine Chapel of prehistory". The new International Centre for Cave Art was opened in Montignac in 2017 and offers an exciting technological approach to retrace these celebrated caves.
A few minutes drive from the cottage you will find favourite tourist attractions such as the imposing Château de Losse and its gardens, the glorious village of St Léon (listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France), with its riverbank cafés and restaurants and the prehistoric settlement of La Roque St Christophe.
The nearest towns offering all amenities are the medieval towns of Montignac (6km) and Sarlat (26km). Montignac is a small, pretty riverside town with an attractive stone bridge and lovely balconied houses along the riverfront. Sarlat is the third largest town in Périgord and boasts many splendid and beautifully restored Renaissance mansions and timber-framed buildings. Both towns are lively and dynamic, have twice-weekly markets and host festivals, art exhibitions and events from June to September. Local events include the international music and dance festival held annually in Montignac, regular flea markets and bric à brac fairs, as well as evening farmer's markets where you can sample the local cuisine and wines.
For those preferring relaxation, take a picnic to the Etangs de Fongron, 2 lakes (10 minutes on foot) in a lush setting where you can fish for trout or carp or walk for miles in the the surrounding woodland. Or visit the natural lake of Tamniés, (10 km) situated in quiet, verdant countryside with its 5000 square metres of fine sandy beach, offering swimming, fishing (in a secondary pond), tennis, picnic areas with tables.
Or for a more active stay, the area also offers many outdoor activities such as canoeing/Kayaking (hire station in the village, a few mins on foot), cycling (for hire in Montignac), woodland walks, horse riding and river fishing and lake fishing.
The cottage is heated and features a kitchen and a patio, and there's space to spread out with 2 bedrooms. Guests can expect to find free WiFi and a Smart TV with a DVD player. Other standard amenities include a private pool, a washing machine, and a fireplace.

We loved this house! It is beautifully decorated, very well equipped and the pool is glorious! Check in was easy and our hosts were so welcoming. We had an issue with our car and our hosts helped us so much with sorting it. We couldn’t have asked for more!

Just perfect
You will not do any better than this. The property is delightful, well equipped, very comfortable for 2 people and perfectly situated. It is basically a small cottage , adjacent to the owner's own house, but quite private, with its own outside space. It is also blessed with a private 11metre swimming pool. The owners are lovely and very helpful, but very respectful of your privacy. There is a village 5 minutes walk away with a couple of decent restaurants and from the cottage it is a short drive to Montignac, and all the attractions of the Vezere valley. We would return like a shot given half a chance, highly recommended.

Excellent quiet and comfortable house with pool
We had a very relaxing week in pretty and comfortable surroundings. The house was very well equipped and attractively decorated. The pool was a good size and very enjoyable to return to after visits out. There are lots of places to visit and things to to in the area. The hosts Caterina and Stephen were very hospitable and made us feel very welcome. An excellent place to recharge the batteries.

Pretty cottage in Thonac
The cottage La Maison du Gardien in Thonac is well equipped and we had a very comfortable holiday there for a week in August. The owners (who live behind the cottage and have an adjoining garden) are a charming mature couple who are friendly and very helpful. They were always ready to chat to us and very knowledgeable about the local area and nearby pre-historic sites. They have a small dog who greets you happily with friendly licks whenever he sees you, but if you're not happy with this they will keep him away. The pool is large and very clean. It would have been even nicer if it was heated as it is partially surrounded by tall trees and didn't get enough sun to warm it sufficiently. However we had a few swims and the little pool terrace is a relaxing place to sit. There is a good restaurant nearby, about a 15 min walk (country road nearest the cottage is not lit at night so take a torch). We found plenty of interesting places to visit locally and the area around the cottage is generally peaceful with not much traffic noise. We are very happy to recommend this cottage as a relaxing holiday let for couples in a beautiful country area.

Two weeks of paradise.
We had a really fabulous time at La Maison du Gardien. The cottage suited us very well. It had everything we needed. Beautifully styled, appointed and decorated. And the pool was to die for (I was hardly out of it) thank you Stephen for looking after it and the garden so meticulously. And thank you too Catherina for being the perfect hostess and helping us out during the tooth emergency. The cottage is perfectly situated being off the beaten track and so very peaceful but yet near enough to Thonac to walk down to the village for a drink or a meal. Montignac is only ten minutes drive away - a lively town full of cafes, bars and shops. Lovely trips out to visit neighbouring villages all of which claim to be “one of most beautiful villages in France”. And they all are!
Added bonus was being in Thonac for the final of the World Cup. Rob went down to the village and joined the locals watching on the big screen. The joint certainly jumped that night but in a very good way.

Idyllic holiday cottage.
The cottage is exactly as described. It oozes charm, character and good taste. It was spotlessly clean. The large swimming pool and patio area is beautiful, private and well maintained.
The cottage is very conveniently located,
being a pleasant walk or a very short drive to Thonac village. There one will find a good pizza restaurant/bar, a hotel with both a garden and indoor restaurant and a small supermarket. Two large supermarkets, pharmacy and petrol station are just five minutes drive away at Montignac. This is a very nice small town to visit and where one buys tickets for Lascaux.
The cottage is perfectly situated to visit the numerous places of interest in the area, and the owners have provided an information brochure of local markets, events and places to visit.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 week stay and found the owners discreet, charming and helpful. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending the property to couples who want a completely relaxing and comfortable holiday.
