Space was Fine, Pre-check-in was Not

The rental was spacious and reasonably clean. Walking distance to restaurants, shops, and Estoril beach. We loved the Brazilian restaurant nearby! The courtyard space was a nice bonus. It is next to an open space, so very quiet and pleasant. The only real complaint was the pre-check-in process. The ad said there would be a security deposit, but didn't specify that it would be paid outside of the VRBO app. This was a surprise, and I'm still not comfortable with it. I don't know when the deposit will be considered fully released or what the process will be if there's a dispute. I ended up chatting for a while with VRBO support to ensure that the 3rd party being used for security deposit escrow was legitimate. Immediately after check-in, we were required to take pics of any pre-existing damage. This really dampened our satisfaction with the space, since we spent the first 30 minutes there searching for everything wrong with it and sending pics. I understand that damage to properties is a problem, but this really detracts from the VRBO experience. Made me wish I'd booked a hotel instead.
