My friends and I came away very pleased with our no-frills wilderness camping on Rod's property. He has the best view of the Huron Mtns I've seen, with a better perspective on the south faces than Pt Abbaye. They really lit up in the sun with peak color all over. We also loved his sweet dog Max, who quickly pivoted from intimidating bark at strangers to "dare you to try to take my stick" playfulness in seconds.I would go back in a heartbeat, but I did take off 1 star for listing accuracy only because I think it could be more informative. (And to be fair I did NOT ask enough questions beforehand and unconsciously projected my own fabricated expectations on the trip.) First off, know the "road" becomes a muddy two-track not fit for low-clearance vehicles maybe a mile before you arrive. This is FAR back in the woods so I'd advise packing EVERYTHING you need & don't plan on being able to make quick trips back into town. Rod did provide us with endless firewood, bucket for fire-dousing water, TP, and a Luggable Loo (no outhouse yet).Know Rod (camper) and his brother (tent) are temp. living on the north end of the propery. We camped in the SE corner. We could barely hear them at all so that wasn't a bother. The property's current ruggedness requires 4-low gear to get near the campsite but a side-by-side is available to get supplies closer. Shoreline is about a 15' drop from site level (climbable for the able-bodied). Very boulder-y so water shoes needed for swimming. Canoe to use
Best view of the Huron Mtns you can get aside from standing atop one. Know site is not a traditionally prepped/graded/grassy plot (yet!). It's a forest floor with large enough flat areas for 3-5 tents of max 3 person capacity. It's maybe 2 acres tota
Zoomed out view of the Huron Mtns. Pictures can't hope to do it justice. We lucked out with mid-Oct temps in the 70s yet very few bugs. I suspect the black flies rule/patrol this place in spring/early summer just like at the point.
Morning view from my tent on an idyllic Oct morning. Drop-off to shoreline is about 2' in front of that log bench.
View of fire pit area w/ log benches looking NW. Solid jump-off spot for Huron Mtn adventuring. We spent a whole afternoon going to/from & climbing one east of Big Erick's bridge.
Stayed 2 nights in Oct 2025
