Motel 6 Coalinga, CA - East
3/5 Okay
"I am a hotel person. I’ve worked in them from janitor to supervisor/manager, back and front of the house. I even worked at Motel 6 way back. I’ve been a tour group leader for 40 years, in and out of hotels of varying levels. It’s simple: Truth in advertising, cleanliness, hospitality, and some amenities. This motel was billed as Coalinga CA East. My wife wanted to stay in Coalinga, a cute small town and explore. This Motel 6 was 13 miles east of Coalinga, next to the Interstate. I’m pretty sure, not in the town limits. The room was immaculately clean and the property generally tidy, but marred by a broken gate into a maintenance area and a five gallon container of oil outside staining the guest walkway. No fridge, coffee maker, or microwave in the room, and no microwave at reception—Motel 6 does not offer breakfast, so, ok. I was told that I could have a room with a fridge at a higher price. The swimming pool was chain locked and unmaintained. Two available ice machine, not working. WiFi was excellent. The desk person was personality-less, no smile or welcome, and inarticulate. The impression was, she didn’t want to be there, or deal with guests. In contrast, a week before, we stayed in a Vagabond Inn down the road in Buttonwillow CA for $53, also by the Interstate. Reception was friendly. Housekeeping in the room immaculate. A fridge. Coffee and a very simple breakfast provided. The outside of the Vagabond was rough, but the basics were well done. Why the $36 difference?"
