Overlooking ancient lava ocean cliffs, Temple Tree Retreat is designed to see and feel nature all around you. Our home has three main living spaces - you get the entire property to yourselves. The main area hosts the kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom and laundry room. Another area is a bedroom/bathroom suite and the third area is a library and office space with a pull out couch bed. The three areas are connected by a covered, open lanai that serves as a cool gangway with amazing ocean views from every plank. Live the Adventurer's life, be a pirate for a week, explore this astounding island from your home port of Temple Tree Retreat.

Interesting house, fantastic location

We enjoyed our stay at this unique place. Beautiful location, right on the water. The house is a unique design with lots of space to roam around. We only had a few minor issues. One is that the refrigerator freezer had someone else’s garbage in it. The owner wants you to put any garbage that might attract insects in a bag in the freezer which is fine. However, they should remove the previous guests garbage before new guest move in. The house needs a functional can opener. The current one is rusty and nonfunctional. Also, it would be nice to have some smaller cocktail glasses in addition to the large 16 oz glasses and abundant wine glasses.

The Power of the Temple Tree Retreat

Breathless!! This place has Hawaii home, all over it. We just loved everything about it from all the old history decor, to the crashing ocean waves! The gated property made us feel very safe, but it was as if we were in our own world!! Just not enough time or words to put it all in. The one word that keeps popping into my mind is "Spiritual" Can't wait to go back.Mahalo!!

Waves and whales

This is our second time staying here. This is a great spot for a family of 4-5 people. The added picnic table was a very pleasant place for breakfast looking out to the ocean watching the whales beach and swimming around the bay. The sounds of the geckos and waves made falling asleep super easy. Just a perfect spot.

Amazing stay!

A quaint experience in a quirky set of buildings in a dreamy location. We had whales so close you could hear them blowing from inside over the sound of the pounding surf, and watched turtles playing from our porch. Decently appointed, comfortable beds, great views. It was clean, and the management was responsive.

The view cannot be beat! The living room, 1 bedroom, and main space are separate buildings connected with a covered walkway. I over looked the fact that it does not have air conditioning, for us that was not good. The view though is spectacular!

Beautiful property but short on pots and pans

the views were beautiful and property quiet. The kitchen was missing items like baking pans for appetizers or a pizza which would have been helpful. Activities were cut short by the approaching tropical storm Hone which is scheduled to hit after check out time and may be a problem on our trip to our other half of our stsy on the Kailus-Kona side making this more of an adventure than we planned for but things happen.

Fantastic home!!!!

The place right on the ocean with an amazing view, the sunrise and the waves was just great. A very unique lodging. The only thing we were missing was a big table and chairs outside. The inside dining table and chairs were not very big and comfortable.

Beautiful Brilliance!

It was wonderful!!! The home was beautiful, well kept, and had all we needed and more to make our vacation fantastic! We loved being on the ocean and having the sun wake us in the mornings. We viewed whales in the blue ocean from the yard or when we were seated on the porch areas. Several turtles would show up every day along the ocean wall. The home is located in a quiet area not too far from Hilo. There was a book in the house that gave info on beaches, dining, etc. That was very helpful. Comfortable beds, beautiful kitchen with all the things needed for cooking, large laundry room, and very clean, comfortable home.

Great house!

This is a great place to stay if you want peace and quiet with beautiful views! My only complaint is that it’s extremely dark at night! We arrived at night and it was difficult to open the gate, get inside, and find light switches. We discussed this ahead of time, and they said they would leave lights on for us, but that unfortunately didn’t happen.

This place is absolutely beautiful. The house is well maintained and has plenty of room for a large group. The outside view is one of the best on the island. Sunrise and sunsets at the house are very special. Hearing the rain, crash of the waves, and breeze from the ocean is so peaceful before going to sleep.

Overwhelmingly Perfect

It was such a beautiful location and amazing beach house that I don't know where to start. From the majesty of the giant waves crashing against the lava rock cliffs, to the sound of the rainforest surrounding us with the songs of birds and frogs, it was truly the quintessential paradise that we hoped for. Loved every minute there!

Unique, Special Experience

This property provided a very special experience for us. The location is amazing, the listing/photos are accurate. The sunrise views from the bedrooms were magical. There is no AC, we were there the first week of Sept and it was 82 outside and around 87 inside the house. It was a little warm, but quickly cooled down in the evening. We would definitely stay here again!

Almost perfect

We enjoyed our stay. The property was very unique, as depicted in the pictures. It was awesome being so close to the ocean. The kitchen met our needs, but we did not try to grill. It was amazing having laundry, especially since we spent a week on another island prior to coming here. Our favorite part about the property was sitting under the stars, hearing the ocean waves crash. The property is located about 30 minutes from major shopping areas (Safeway, Target, Walmart) and Hilo. We didn't mind the drive. The hosts left a binder with things to do, places to visit, including restaurants, and details about the property, which was helpful. The house is about a 40 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park, and about an hour and a half drive from Kona. Even though it was a challenging hike to get to (rocks, roots, and mud), we really enjoyed Shipman's Beach, which is located within the neighborhood. The one thing we did not like was that the upstairs (master) bedroom gets so hot that it made it difficult for my husband and me to get a good night's sleep. We understand it is the norm to not have air conditioning in Hawaii, but the room up there does not cool off very well, even with the windows open and the fans on. Our boys slept in the other 2 bedrooms and their rooms cooled down in the evening.

Really Run Down

This property is very run down. Beware: the pictures look great, but unfortunately the actual house is very disappointing. Lots of rust and mold which we know can happen on the Hilo side of the island due to the moisture, but we stayed in another house in this exact neighborhood previously and it was much nicer and did not have any issues. The layout is very odd with no good space to gather to eat or hang out to socialize. There were 4 very old plastic outdoor chairs so sitting or eating outside was not possible. The Weber grill was totally rusted and did not work. The whole place smelled musty and there is no AC ( they say they have a portable floor unit but it was very old and sis not work). We had to call maintenance to have them put a screen on our door so that we could open it to get some air flow. The and the fixtures and amenities in the house are not high quality. There is a real hodge-lodge of kitchen items and they have far too many platters and cups but not enough plates or bath towels. Cleanliness was lacking. There was leftover food in the refrigerator and freezer from the last guests (not just the typical condiments that you sometimes find). They keys were very confusing and we ended up locked out. The maintenance person came but did not have back up keys so he had to crawl through an upstairs window to unlock the door. I hate to leave a bad review-but Hawaii is an expensive trip of a lifetime for many, so they need to know!

Vacation 2023

We enjoyed the house. Unfortunately, we both got sick two days after being there. We probably caught something on the airplane. The view was amazing! We did have some problems with the TVs working correctly. Also one room with the air conditioner and it was so musty that we could not use it. Being to women alone, we were a little concerned about people walking in front of the property after dark. We had no problems with anybody but after we got used to it, it didn’t bother us too much. We did have a few issues with some maintenance. The property manager very nice and came out to fix the issues. I would recommend this house to anybody else.
