What a luxury to step out of our room onto a soft, white sand beach. Between our room, the water and neighbouring restaurants, we never needed to leave the beach! The rooms are simple, but clean and the bed was comfortable. The bungalows are lovely with a laid-back vibe, a beautiful garden and lots of shade trees. Restaurants are close by and the wood-fired pizza shop, literally steps from our door, made delicious pizza. What really made our visit was the staff – They are the best! Everyone is welcoming, friendly and always ready to assist. We liked that it was an ‘public' beach as described in the listing. Kids and families from the village played in the water, there was a nightly football game on the beach, and photogenic fishing boats and dhows bobbed in the water. Honest review – expect local guides, souvenir sellers, etc. to approach you on the beach. Fortunately, they are mostly easy going and it can be fun just to talk to them. The bungalows are closely clustered around the bar/lounge area. It is low-keyed, everyone is there just to chill, and all is quiet even before 10. Overall, this is an excellent value in a truly special location.

I have not been back to Zanzibar for 20 years, this is my 4th visit. I wanted to bring my children. Zanzibar has changed alot, big hotels and alot of development, not well controlled. This is an exellent establishment. The beach cottages are pretty with fans and an ocean view. Wonderful sunbeds infront of the ocean. We ate at the restaurant twice, i had really fresh lobster, chicken tacos and a very good cheesecake. The rooms are cleaned evryday to a very high standard which is a relief after the sandy beach days. We had our washing done and it was not a rip off like other places we stayed. The snorkelling in their own Dhow was really good and a third of the price of other places. Their captain spoke english and explained sailing techniques along the way. They have a wood pizza oven and their pizzas are really good, the best I have eaten in ages. The staff are professional and kind, their cocktails at the sand bar are superb with fresh juices. We had healthy breakfast option with really good homemade granola and local honey. The reason I am leaving such a detailed review is that I own a hotel and camp in Marrakech and I can see how well run this place is. They care about the beach and their room information educates you on how they give back and their recycling beach trash initiatives. This is one of a few authentic Zanzibarian accommodations left. Jambiani beach has other little places and I would recommend staying here if you want fresh fish, good vibes!

The bar staff are amazing - really hospital and friendly! Stunning location and the team are able to organise any taxis/trips etc really easily! The only downside was that we didn't have AC in the room and it was boiling at night!

Fun and casual hotel

The location of the hotel is great, it's close to kite-surf shops, in front of a beautiful beach and near very cool bars and restaurants. The rooms are ok, nothing fabulous but functional and charming. Unfortunately I was given a noisy room that was close to the staff room where they go in and out all day to do washing and storage so it wasn't very private. Also the windows cannot be closed so you can hear everything that's going on outside. I did request a change of room but this wasn't possible as all the other rooms were fully booked. They have a nice bar and they make good cocktails. The staff are super friendly and are always up for a chat. The wifi doesn't work in the room, only in common areas.

English Couple Retreat After Tanzania Safari

What a lovely little place! We stayed in the Bungalows which was lovely, the restaurant area isnt as lively as the Lodges (200m away) but that was fine by us! The pizza and cocktails offered at the Bungalow restaurant were delicious - far too many were eaten!! And the food at the Lodge restaurant was always lovely too. Comfy sunloungers and you're right on the beach which is perfect. You get used to the tides after a few days and its lovely to walk out on low tide too - we spotted a starfish and plenty of hermit crabs. The staff are so welcoming and helpful, you guys really made the stay so thank you! We didnt do as many trips as we'd hoped as we just got too relaxed to want to move!! But there's plenty of activity options on offer. We didnt have aircon but the fan was more than sufficient - even needing to turn it off a few nights as we got too cold! Rooms are nice and airy with the windows. If you're after a low key, relaxing, beach stay and don't want to spend a fortune then Blue Reef is ideal!

Wonderful holiday at the Blue Reef

We stayed for 8 nights and felt great. Excellent service, good food and lovely cocktails. We stayed in the lodge, where the room is not like in a hotel, but is so comfortable with a king size bed, impeccable cleaned every day. We loved the premises, very offering for relaxing with the ocean view... Thank you and hope to come back next year :)

Amazing people and place

We were fetched at the airport and brought to the lodge where we were welcomed by Nicky, Tom and a few members of staff. We were showed to our room and when we settled in, received a welcome drink, prepared by Nutty and served with a friendly smile. We automatically felt welcome and at home. The next day we met Nathan (Simba) who was very welcoming and had a big smile on his face. Over the course of our stay we got to know EVERYONE more, and the more we got to know them, the more they felt like family. We weren't treated like strangers, we were treated like friends and towards the end, after we got to know them properly - like family. Nutty, Antony, Habibi, Wilimina, Bonny, Hashim and ALL the other members of staff were absolutely AMAZING to us and EVERYONE is always smiling. The food is absolutely amazing and the lodge caters for your needs, whatever that may be. The placement of the lodge is absolutely perfect all around, and I must say, seeing the ocean view and feeling the breeze constantly, is absolute bliss. Not a second goes by that your needs are not accommodated, you are never left feeling unwelcome, by anyone, at any moment in time. The parties were amazing too :) Simba and his girlfriend Sue, were amazing to us, we spent quite a bit of time with them and they showed us new places too, leaving us with memories that we not only made on our own, but memories made with new friends too.THANK YOU TO EVERYONE AT BLUE REEF and we will be back soon! Great place in Jambiani

Blue Reef is actually two lodges in two spots on the beach in Jambiani with same owners. Both have full bar service. One spot has a specialty for Pizzas with a stone stove and the other with a full restaurant that makes great dishes. Staff is friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is relaxed. It's right on the beach so you walk out of your room bare foot... Room is basic but for the price it's great. You don't spend too much time there anyway :) All in all a great stay.

Amazing place in Jambiani

- the communication with the hotel owner was smooth - there were no unpleasant surprises waiting for us - everything in other reviews was 100% correct - we were picked up from the airport - the beach bungalow was ready and always clean - the staff was very nice and helpful - the breakfast served at the porch (nice view of the beach) - the beach was clean and accessible right from the bungalows (low tide - nice walks, high tide - water was 3m from the resort) - food and cocktails were very good in the blue reef restaurant
