Wonderful hotel in a great location

The room was a little small, but that wasn't a huge factor as we were pretty much only in the room to sleep, but having an elevator was a must for us as we're getting too old to be carrying luggage up stairs. The hotel is not quite in as touristy of a location as some of the others, which is something we wanted, and the restaurant next door, Fucco Matto, turned out to be our favorite for the entire trip, and was the only place we actually went back to a second time. Getting a taxi or learning the bus system can be challenging, and the staff was very helpful with that as well. All in all, Hotel St. James was a wonderful place to stay and I would absolutely recommend it and stay there again.

Room is old, albeit clean for the first night. There is one wardrobe but only 3 hangers, no drawers, nowhere to put your clothes. Bathroom is large, but toilet leaks, and it takes several attempts to make it flush properly. It is just a very old, not well equipped hotel.

The room was okay for what we paid. But we came in late and the person at the desk took as little of his time as he could to explain parking and our room access. I had messaged the hotel to get specific parking instructions before our arrival but got no reply. This guy just seemed like he couldn’t care less.

The room was spacious and adequate for four people. Staff was amicable and room was overall clean. Location was very central and we walked to the Duomo in ten minutes. One unexpected issue was that it was tricky to get to the hotel by car due to the restricted zones you aren’t allowed to drive into. And, once you get to the hotel, it turns out that parking is located at another hotel. Not far (maybe two blocks away) but, again, tricky to get to and would have been nice to know from the get-go. Also, during the second/last night the A/C broke. E think it was something to do with the fan as it started banging so loudly that all four of us woke up around 2:15 or so. We had to turn it off completely (hello stuffiness and heat) and for the next hour it continued to make noises every two or so minutes. I didn’t go back to sleep until 5:45am…. With a 6:15am wake, that was really inconvenient. Probably nobody’s fault, but very unfortunate. Interestingly, my SIL told me later that their fan didn’t work either…she stayed in the same hotel.
