Secluded Russian River retreat: nature & privacy in pastoral Duncans Mills.

NEWLY LISTED as of June 2024. This home offers complete privacy in a tranquil forest setting, surrounded by second-growth redwoods, ferns, and Japanese Maples from the west, east, and south. The lush grounds back into the Sonoma Land Trust's Freezeout Redwoods Watershed Preserve, nestled within the picturesque Sonoma Beach State Park. The architect-designed house boasts solid craftsmanship, picturesque views, and includes two bedrooms and two bathrooms over two levels. A new 2024 hot tub is adjacent to the downstairs bedroom, while a heated patio with BBQ on the upper deck overlooks the Russian River ravine and surrounding hillsides. This section of the Russian River is uniquely wild and undeveloped, frequently visited by foxes, deer, river otters, and seals swimming upstream from Jenner. The area is also an open aviary, home to egrets, herons, ducks, mallards, shorebirds, songbirds, and raptors like ospreys and occasionally bald eagles.

Beyond the property, guests can enjoy walking-distance river access and the popular Islands in the Sky trails for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking. The historic town of Duncans Mills is a scenic one-mile walk away, offering various local events and activities (https://duncansmillsvillage.com/events/). Nearby attractions include renowned wineries crafting Russian River Pinot Noirs, such as Fort Ross, Hartford Family Winery, Korbel, and Iron Horse. A few miles east leads guests to the Northwood Golf Course, designed by famous golf course designer Dr. Alister MacKenzie (known for Augusta National, Pasatiempo, and Cypress Point). Golf.com ranks it as the 30th best 9-hole course globally, and TravelAwaits.com places it as the 8th best public course in California. The majestic Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Preserve is a few miles further east, in Guerneville, which boasts massive first-growth Redwood stands. From the property, a seven-mile drive west leads to the mouth of the Russian River at Jenner and the dramatic beaches of West Sonoma County, featuring hiking trails and tidepools. Close to Jenner, the Kortum hiking trail leads to the famous Sunset Boulders, a blueschist rock formation believed to have been used by mammoths as a scratching post 40,000 years ago. Whether exploring West Sonoma and Duncans Mills or just relaxing with a book and a glass of wine, this location offers a perfect retreat.
The vacation home is heated and features a kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a balcony, and there's space to spread out with 2 bedrooms. Guests can enjoy a TV and stay connected with free WiFi. Other standard amenities include a coffee maker, a phone, and a desk.

We enjoyed the quiet. The location was very near our areas of interest, wineries, Armstrong Woods and the coast. It is somewhat isolated but close enough to markets and restaurants.

This home and property is so neat! There’s a lot to explore on the grounds. It’s well taken care of and a hidden gem that you must experience! The upstairs bed is so comfortable and the spa was nice to relax in as it got chilly in the evening! I can’t wait to come back again!

Russian River Getaway

This home was absolutely lovely! It’s in such a beautiful, secluded area with fantastic scenery. The short mile or so walk down to the cute coffee shop is just what was needed to start our mornings. Stunning trees and greenery surround the property and tons of active birds and wildlife! My husband and I were lucky enough to be visited by foxes, raccoons, and a whole family of deer! The hosts were also fantastic, keeping in touch with us anytime we needed anything or if we had a snafu. We would absolutely love to stay at this property again. Perfect location, gorgeous trees, and so so quiet.

Sister trip

This home in Sabina was amazing. Tucked in the trees with a view of the hills. The sounds of nature were a treat, much lived by our birders. Home itself had a good flow with the living and kitchen area. Electric fireplace provided warmth and ambience. Split level gave parties privacy and quiet. Hot tub clean and perfect for end of day soak. Great location with access to river, short drives to beaches, cute shops, couple of restaurants and bakery in Duncan Mills. High recommend for a retreat if any kind.

Gorgeous Home on an Amazing Property

Our family absolutely loved this place. We spent a lot of time enjoying the peaceful landscape amongst the forest taking in the fresh air. The layout of this home (cool design) is well thought out and had everything we needed. Very responsive host and easy check-out. We walked to the Island in the Sky trail and Duncan’s Mills. Our son ran down Moscow road to Monte Rio. Short drive to Monte Rio for river action and same for Guernville. Another short drive to all the beach activities in Jenner and Bodega Bay. Gold Coast is a great bakery. Also recommend the Fishetarian in Bodega and Cafe Aquatica in Jenner.

My family and I loved our stay here. House was the right size for the 5 of us. Owner extremely responsive and helpful. House was super clean. Property was wonderful, we enjoyed the deck and the hammock. Views were beautiful. Enjoyed eating at Blue Heron and Cape Fear with kids. Quick trip to a nice beach just down the way (owner had details)… would definitely come back! Thank you!

Beautiful home located in Russian River's finest neighborhood . In fifteen minutes you can be in Armstrong State Park , Kortum Trail over at Shell Beach and in three minutes The Island in the Sky Trail. You may even get an evening visit from deer or a fox in the back yard. Besides delicious baked goods and coffee the Gold Coast Bakery just down the road serves excellent pizza.

Comfortable Place in a Quiet Location

We loved the house, and Kimberly was very communicative and accommodating. We loved the location in the redwoods and on a very quiet road off the main traffic along the river (no direct river access which would be nice, but there are plenty of beaches you can go to). We enjoyed the backyard wildlife too. We saw lots of warblers and jays and a few foxes trotting by. The house is lovely, secluded, and very comfortable. We found everything we needed in the house. We'd love to come back again sometime! Thank you!

Beautiful home on incredible property. Took my wife and kids here for mothers day weekend to get away from it all and this was the perfect location. The house is tucked away on a hillside on a large lot so it was very quiet and tranquil. Beautiful views from the deck and exceptional landscaping with a short path up the hill. My daughters and wife got so comfortable in the hammock they said they could have laid there forever. The home was clean and cozy with very tasteful design and decor, the location is super close to local restraunts and shops. Host was very communicative and responsive. Definately would recommend! Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Hillside Sanctuary

Tucked against Sonoma Coast State Park, this rental afforded a true escape from city life. The garden felt like decades of work, lush with Japanese Maples and visited by all kinds of birds and the occasional chipmunks.Beds were comfy, kitchen was well equipped, hot tub was clean and awesome. Heaters really pump the heat when the nights get cold. Tons of natural light.Don't be afraid of the one-lane road to the property; it's low trafficked and the neighbors do not speed. Just preview on Google maps so you'll recognize the steep driveway on your left.Kimberly the manager was very helpful.Recommended!

Perfect Zen Escape

This home is amazing. The layout so perfect if you have kids, a space downstairs for them while there’s also a space upstairs for the adults so everyone can enjoy easy conversation. The grounds are amazing! We saw birds, a chipmunk (we named it Nutmeg), foxes, and approximate a million banana slugs. There are many levels to the yard with a hammock, fire pit, hot tub, and paths to walk. We walked into town - an easy, beautiful 1 mile walk that everyone could complete (5-70 years old). We can’t wait to return!!! Favorite rental ever.

More than expected

This was such a great oasis getaway! The property felt secluded, even though it is only a mile (and within walking distance) of places to eat and coffee. Two floors connected by a spiral staircase (there is a gravel driveway that extends to the upper floor where the kitchen, living area, outdoor patio, and a second bedroom are located in case there are any accessibility issues) and the bedrolms are on both floors which make it very quiet. Everything I could want in a getaway/ hot tub, fire pit, indoor fireplace, beautiful deck with outside seating to catch the sun. Even a hammock for relaxing a reading a book! Host was VERY responsive, and reached out to me several times, which I appreciated. I would suggest if you don’t know the area to try to come in daylight as the roads are curvy and the actual road that the house is on is one lane. Host gave clear directions, but my phone app also directed me accurately. Would love to come back again!
