Need a Car For After Your Flight?

Iceland is a very unique place for tourists to visit, especially because it is located near the Arctic Circle. It features strange desolate landscapes but has a nice mild climate.

Flights to Iceland

Keflavic International Airport (KEF) is the island's main international airport situated about 25 miles away from Reykjavik. Since flights to Iceland can be quite long after landing on the airport, it is best to bring some form of entertainment like a book or a game console. If you take Iceland flights coming from outside Switzerland or the EEA, be prepared for a security check. Make sure that your visas are in order. Thankfully, there is a duty-free store at the baggage claim area where visitors can buy whatever products they need. To get to Reykjavik, you can take a FlyBus. Taxi cabs from KEF can be quite expensive but the ride through these lands is made much more.

Iceland Weather

Booking flights to Iceland can be very confusing because the name of the country doesn't describe its mild climate. This weather can turn into biting wind or heavy rain. It is dry in between the months of May to July. During these times, the coastal sand deltas and the interior deserts can exhibit fierce blizzards and sandstorms. The best time to book flights to Iceland is from July to August when the snow starts to fade. During the rest of the year, many tourist destinations and facilities outside of Reykjavik close due to the harsh weather conditions.

Getting Around Iceland

The use of aircraft as a means of travel is as common in Iceland as buses and trains in other famous tourist destinations. Be careful of bumpy rides though, especially in the fjords. If you want to travel Reykjavik in a more convenient manner, there are hundreds of cars for hire offered by numerous agencies. Traffic in the area can be quite heavy though, but you can use a bike as a cheap alternative. Rather than buying bicycle or lugging one on your Iceland flight, rent one from the many rental establishments in the city. In addition, since the place is cold most of the time, it is best to walk from one destination to another. It will keep your body warm in winter.

Iceland Attractions

Discount Iceland flights are worth the money because the country offers stunning scenery and fantastic nature experiences. Here are 5 of the best destinations in the area:

  • Gulfoss: two-tier waterfalls beautifully half-frozen in the winter
  • The Blue Lagoon: geothermal tourist attraction which acts as a natural spa center
  • Geysir Hot Springs: in Bjarnafell just 90 minutes from Reykjavik, filled with geysers blowing hot water high into the air
  • Landmannalaugar: volcanic highlands in the southeast of Iceland filled with hot springs, perfect for camping and picnics
  • Vatnajokull National Park: the park is filled with nature's wonders including waterfalls, long canyons, and icecaps

How to book the cheapest flight to Iceland?
With Orbitz, you'll find some of the most amazing flight deals around from a big selection of airlines. But if you want to improve your chances of landing cheap flights to Iceland, here are some pointers to consider:

  • Departing from or arriving at other airports can be more cost-effective. Enter your preferred departure and arrival points. Next, select the 'Nearby airports' function below the form fields to compare your options.
  • If your travel plans aren't set in concrete, click on the 'Show flexible dates' option to check out the flight deals for different departure dates. If you find a better fare, book it.
  • Hit 'Show options' to fine tune your search results. You can choose your preferred airline and seating class here. Under 'Sort & Filter' to the left, you can even specify whether you'd like to fly in the morning, afternoon or evening.
  • The early bird catches the biggest savings, so book your tickets the moment you know your travel dates. The cheapest airfares get snapped up first and prices generally increase as the departure date gets closer.
  • Think about combining your hotels, flights and car rental into an Orbitz package deal to stretch your budget even further.
  • Flying during busier seasons means expensive airfares. If possible, plan your vacation outside of popular periods, such as Easter, Thanksgiving and school breaks.

What is the best time to book a flight to Iceland?
Generally speaking, the cheapest time to book a seat is January. This is followed by February and August. When searching for a cheap flight to Iceland, it always pays to be ready to book. Cheap deals pop up suddenly and don't stick around!
What day of the week is the cheapest to book a flight to Iceland?
To land a rewarding flight deal, book on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. These are usually the cheapest days of the week to purchase airfares to Iceland.
What is the cheapest day of the week to fly to Iceland?
Consider going early in the week for cheap flights to Iceland. Orbitz data from 2020 shows Monday is typically the most inexpensive day to set off, followed by Tuesday. Saturday was found to have the most expensive ticket fares. Presumably, this is because most passengers prefer to kick off their vacation when the weekend rolls around.
What is the cheapest month to fly to Iceland?
To secure cheap flights to Iceland, you should fly out in August. If getting a great deal on your plane ticket is your main priority, Orbitz data has found that this is generally an excellent month to jet off. June is when fares are the least affordable.
Which airlines allow free cancellation?
If you suspect your travel plans may change, Orbitz will help you lock in a flexible ticket. All you need to do is choose "Filter by flexible change policies" when searching for your perfect flight. We'll show you airlines that offer free cancellation and no change fees — along with our famous low prices.
What do I need for the flight to Iceland?
It's always wise to be prepared for anything when traveling. Keep in mind the following for a smooth, stress-free journey:

  • In all cases you'll need identification. How much? This depends on where you're flying from. When booking your tickets, you are encouraged to put down the same name, gender and birth date as listed on your government-issued ID.
  • Pack some extra entertainment for your long trip to Iceland. When you're done watching that series on your phone, give your eyes a much-needed rest from all that screen time and listen to some music instead.
  • Temperatures in the cabin can quickly change, so it's best to dress in comfortable layers. Also consider wearing compression socks. They can help prevent swelling and improve blood circulation.

How do I get cheap first-class/business deals to Iceland?
Experienced travelers have mastered the art of finding business or first-class airfares to Iceland without the astronomical price tag. Be like them with these useful hints:

  • Being flexible isn't just useful in the gym. Have some room to move around your travel dates so you can snap up more affordable airfares when a big sale drops.
  • Budget airlines offer first or business-class seats at more affordable prices. Give the full-service carriers a miss and look into these cheaper options.
  • Bid for an upgrade in online auctions or upgrade with frequent flyer loyalty programs.

What is the best time to go to Iceland?
There's never a bad time to go to Iceland, but March, April and May are the most popular months. Like most places in the Northern Hemisphere, summertime commences June 20. If you'd rather spend most of your days in a lightweight top than a winter jacket, this time of year would be ideal. Expect average daytime highs of 50 ºF and nighttime lows around 45 ºF.
