MARBLE QUARRIES OF FANTISCRITTI - COLONATA E DI RAVACCIONE

The quarries of Colonnata

The first stop towards the marble basins generally leads to Colonnata (m532), an ancient village said to have been founded to house slaves who extracted marble in Roman times. The quarries of the Colonnata canal constitute the most imposing of the Apuan basins and offer a superb view of the majestic ravaneti on the sides of the Serrone Maggiore and Spallone Mountains. At the top of the homonymous mountain is the Gioia basin: it is a complex of quarries that constitute a unique glance in the world.

The Quarries of Fantiscritti

The Fantiscritti quarries (m450) can be reached by following the Carrione stream to the Vara bridges. They allowed, from the end of the last century, the passage of the railway used for the transport of marble, now transformed into a road that crosses the Galleria Vara. Fantiscritti owes its name to the discovery of a find from the Roman era, now preserved in the Carrara Academy, consisting of small bas-relief figures carved on the steep wall of a spur of rock. The marble extracted from this basin is the light white type of the Battaglino and the Grand Canal, the statuary one of Bettogli and the ordinary white of the Fantiscritti.

The Quarries of Ravaccione

The Caves of Ravaccione (444 m.) Start from the Piastra locality (267 m.) Which can be accessed by following the Canale di Torano to the Canale di Pescina. An exceptional panorama of the quarries of the Ravaccione basin can be admired from the Belvedere di Campocecina (1,200 m).
