'Casa do Gabriel' spacious Madeirian villa with private garden and ocean view

Casa do Gabriel is situated in a calm rural village area in the hamlet of Estreito da Calheta on the south-west coast of the beautiful sub-tropical island of Madeira.

The house is located within a 40 minute drive from the airport and is in a quiet, private and secluded location with spectacular panoramic south-westerly views over the Atlantic Ocean with the beautiful mountains behind.

The house has one level and includes two double bedrooms, two bathrooms (one has the bath tub and the second is equipped with shower stall), living room, dining area and kitchen. The kitchen is bright, roomy and well-equipped with all the necessary appliances for cooking. There is a separate laundry room with washer, freezer, sink, iron and ironing board.

For your comfort the property is equipped with all the usual features, such as bed linen and towels, free Wi-Fi, TV (135 channels in English, Portuguese, Spanish and French), washing machine, dishwasher, sun-loungers, etc.

There is an upstairs terrace with an amazing view of the ocean.

A patio around the house overlooks a private garden with walking paths. In the garden you will find avocado tree, orange tree, and guava along with numerous exotic flowers and shrubs. Fruits are available for our guests in season. A lower private patio in the garden is surrounded with flowering shrubs and bushes depending on the season with a view of the blue ocean.
The house overlooks a deep gorge with a variety of birds flying around, including buzzards and kites. Binocular available to do some bird-watching.

The only sandy beach on the island is in Calheta and it is 5 minute drive from the house as well as the supermarket Pingo Doce, ATM, marina with lots of restaurants. Dolphin and whale watching and deep sea fishing excursions are available from there. The levadas (irrigation channels), mountain walks of Rabaçal and Prazeres are all only a short drive away.

Normally sleeping four persons in two double bedrooms. The fifth person could sleep in the hide-a-bed in the living room if required.

Beautiful garden getaway

I stayed at Casa do Gabriel for 8 days and loved every moment I spent on the secluded terrace, sipping wine, taking in the unlimited ocean views, surrounded by hibiscus and frangipani flowers. The house was spotlessly clean and Irina was a very responsive host. It was a great location for hiking and water access, and a world away from the tourist frenzy in Funchal. Highly recommend!

Madeira holiday

We stayed for the first time on Madeira in Casa do Gabriel. We had a fantastic time. Madeira is beautiful with one week not being near enough to explore and do all the things Madeira offers. Our choice of Casa do Gabriel to stay in was an inspired choice. The house is fabulous, well equipped, comfortable, well located, private, clean, lovely hostess, fab garden with fruit we were allowed to pick! We loved everything about our accommodation and our stay in Madeira.

There were many things that were good about this property but some things let it down. The ping pong table was broken ( owner apologised & said she'd forgotten to mention it) we could not get into the garage, front door lock was broken, staining on pillow & bed cover in second bedroom ( owner apologised, said it was an oversight by the cleaners!) No hair dryer, upstairs seating area, swing was not clean. There is a photo on the web page showing a sun lounger but this area is now overgrown! However, we loved the island, had a fabulous tour with Hit The Road Tours, highly recommended. We had hired a car & saw what this beautiful island has to offer. We shall return but not to this property...

Glad it was the last leg of our Portugal Trip.

We spent 3 weeks in Portugal - Lisbon, Sintra, Coimbra, Porto and then finished our trip in Madeira - best decision EVER. We were really busy on the mainland - what we call 'travelling': seeing sites, busy crowds, larger cities - busy days and nights. We flew out for the last 6 days of our trip and this was our 'Vacation'. Fantastic and beautiful location. The moment we walked in we pulled back the drapes and opened the windows - and didn't close them until we left. The view to the ocean was spectacular and so very, very peaceful. I spent three solid days on the patio reading and relaxing and many times just sitting in peace, watching the birds, butterflies, honey bees and lizards do their thing. The garden is beautiful with many different flowers - the angel bells were my favorite and smelled incredible. The house was clean and had the basics that we needed. We found a mercado and stocked up on simple foods - cheese, jamon, sparkling water, and other snacks - it was all we needed. The owners were very responsive and gracious. We were able to catch up on laundry and had racks to easily dry them outside. Coffee pot, microwave, fridge, stove, dishes and cutlery - everything we needed. They left a nice basket with wine, bread, jam and other goodies. We live in California and if we come back, will again spend a long week on Madeira - the island is beautiful - tropical and reminded us of Hawaii but much quieter. The houses are built into the side of the mountain so was hard to find one without a view . The folks there were gracious and helpful. We found out the island has 420 tunnels! Our ride from the airport was 50 minutes and were told before the tunnels were built it would take over 3 hours. We knew there were many beautiful locations and historical sites to check out but this leg we were ready to just decompress. If you're coming don't let the 50 minute drive to the location deter you - you'll be very glad you came out this far and it was super easy to rent a car. Thanks to Irina for a wonderful stay. PS - they had a fascinating library, dvd's and cd's and I read a few of her books while there.

Lovely Madeiran hideaway

Excellent home from home with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Irina was very welcoming and was there to meet us even although it was a late flight. We also appreciated the welcome provisions. The property was spotless and bed very comfortable. The location is quiet and peaceful and only a 5 minute drive to Calheta where there are some restaurants, supermarket and the beach. Plenty space around the house to relax in the sunshine including a lovely roof terrace. There is a bar and a local supermarket within walking distance. The driveway is a bit steep but no problem once you get used to it - best with a smaller car.

This villa is a lovely home with everything you could possibly want to make it the perfect place to relax. The terrace is delightful with sunshine all day. We loved the openness and views of the property.

We enjoyed the garden and the avocados from the avocado tree. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was equipped with blender, oven, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, hot water pot. That being said, new frying pans are needed as well as a pasta pot. The driveway down to the house is quite the challenge and frightening. It is necessary to line the vehicle up with the driveway when going down so that you don’t hit the cement wall on one side or the drop off on the other. Going up has similar issues. We used the house for our base to explore the rest of the island which we loved!

What A Wonderful Place!

After following probably the best directions we've ever come across, we arrived at Casa do Gabriel and is everything and more that it claimed to be. The location is simply beautiful and the views from the rooftop were simply amazing. We had everything we needed and our hosts' recommendations, maps, etc. were extremely helpful. Perfect location

We stayed for four nights at Caso do Gabriel and were very pleased with our accommodations. The setting is just as described. There is only one house to the right of the back patio where you will spend most of your time gazing out at the ocean. The house in front is lower so it does not intrude with the panorama. There is no house to the left ... only a big valley/fold in the earth. It is extremely peaceful, quiet, without issues. We loved the levado walks, visits to neighboring towns, and just relaxing. The north side is vastly different and worth visiting, but the south side is definitely the place to be. Casa do Gabriel fits the bill with a large kitchen, plenty of space for a couple to be and not in each other's way (two bathrooms), a great patio downstairs and a place to dine outdoors as well as indoors. Washer/dishwasher/oven/coffee maker. We did have a challenge with the microwave which is Russian. But I'm sure the owners can remedy this very slight inconvenience (if you are micro prone). The biggest challenge is the driveway which is quite steep and a bit unnerving. Would not recommend doing this at night. The drive from airport was very easy...took us about 45 minutes. Directions were excellent. There is a supermarket in neighboring town about 10 minutes. A closer small mercado about three minutes. The hot water sometimes did vary when taking a shower which elicited a few "eeks" from shower participants as it vacillated from hot to cold and back. But the view and the ambiance overwhelms any negatives. The restaurant Quinta Alegre was excellent. And you use the signs to find your rental...so that makes it even more convenient. The owner gives excellent printed out directions to find your place along with the code to get in making it very convenient. Highly recommend.

Maison très joliment décorée, spacieuse, avec une vue magnifique sur l'océan et cette partie de l'île. Très propre et très calme. Très bonne literie également et maison très bien équipée. Nous avons beaucoup apprécié les petites attentions laissées pour notre arrivée. En revanche, nous avons eu un peu de difficulté à trouver la maison, mais nous sommes arrivés de nuit. Il faudrait peut-être l'indiquer par un panneau en haut du chemin, à droite de la route. Je recommande ce coin de l'île, qui est moins urbain, mais pas trop isolé non plus.

Charmante und ruhige Basis am Meer

Ein herrliches, sehr ruhig gelegenes Haus für alle die einen erholsamen Urlaub verbringen möchten.. Das Haus ist eine gute Basis für die Erkundung der Insel. Im Februar konnten wir draußen frühstücken. Wenn wir von unseren Wanderungen zurückkamen, haben wir oft einen Sundowner im Garten genossen. Ein Plus waren zu dieser Jahreszeit reifen Avocados im Garten. Das Haus liegt unterhalb einer ruhigen Straße und ist absolut ruhig gelegen. Restaurants sind sehr schnell (Quinta Allegre zu Fuß, ist für einen Drink mit herrlicher Aussicht oder am Kamin sehr zu empfehlen) mit dem Auto in wenigen Minuten zu erreichen, ebenso wie ein sehr gut sortierten Supermarkt in ca. 3 km in Calheta. Wir fanden das "Mare Alta" in Ponta do Sol wegen seiner Location sehr gut, man sitzt direkt am Wasser und das Essen schmeckt nicht schlecht. Der Kontakt zu den Vermietern war im Vorfeld und während des Aufenthaltes sehr gut. Vor Ort gibt es eine ständig erreichbare Ansprechpartnerin. Wir können das Haus sehr empfehlen. - Claudia und Christian A wonderful and charming house which is very well situated for a relaxed vacation. The house is a good base for exploring the island. We stayed in February and enjoyed breakfast on the terrasse with a view. When we came back from our hiking tours we often had a sundowner in the garden. A nice plus at that time of the year were avocados from the garden.The house is situated very quiet. Restaurants are accessible within a few minutes drive . We loved the "Mare Alta" restaurant in Ponta do Sol close to the waterline for its great location and good food for reasonable prizes . A supermarket is only about 3 km away . Le jardin était super agréable avec differentes fleurs et arbres fruitiers.Petit bémol sur le frigo (top) qui est vraiment trop petit pour 4 personnes.Le confort et la qualité sont au RDVMerci Irina et a bientôt peut-etre
