I stayed at Best Western Plus Pearl Addis Ababa with my wife for a long stay (23 days) . While the location is safe and the housekeeping was good, I experienced two incidents that left me extremely disappointed.
First, upon check-in, I paid the full amount for my entire stay in advance. On the day of my departure, a staff member at reception told me I had to pay an additional USD 26 due to a change in the Ethiopian birr exchange rate. I explained that I had already paid in full at the original rate and that currency fluctuations are not the guest’s responsibility. After an unnecessary argument, he finally allowed me to leave without paying. This situation was frustrating and unprofessional, and it should never have happened.
Second, the head chef was particularly unfriendly. On one occasion, I came for breakfast at 9:55 am (breakfast ends at 10:00 am), and instead of welcoming me, he rudely told me to come earlier next time. This attitude was not only unpleasant but also unprofessional, especially for long-staying guests like us. That day, my wife and I ended up ordering food at our own expense because of the chef’s behaviour.
Overall, despite staying for a long period and paying a significant amount, these experiences left me feeling unwelcome. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously to improve guest service and professionalism in the future.
