Best neighborhood if you’re an insomniac: Herald Square
Yes, New York is called the “city that never sleeps,” but stores usually do have closing hours. That’s not the case at Macy’s Herald Square this weekend, though. The massive department store opens at 5pm on Thanksgiving Day and will welcome shoppers throughout the night and into the next day. Doorbuster deals are promised, as well as at nearby stores like Gap and Urban Outfitters. (Note: hours vary at these other popular chains.)

Best neighborhood if you like shopping with a view: Battery Park
Downtown Manhattan is home to two brand new shopping malls. Brookfield Place is a luxury shopping center that includes an atrium filled with palm trees andfloor-to-ceiling windows featuring waterfront views and peeps of the Statue of Liberty. Standout stores in Battery Park include J.Crew, Diane Von Furstenberg and lululemon. A couple of blocks away is where you’ll find the even newer Westfield World Trade Center, which features Instagram-ready architecture and skylights, as well as stores like Apple, COS, Kiehl’s, Kit and Ace, and more. The mall is also home to Eataly, the Italian market and restaurant which also boasts spectacular views of the downtown skyline.

Best neighborhood if you’re shopping for a hipster: Williamsburg
Brooklyn’s bustling neighborhood has been having a moment for some time now. But with big names like Apple and Whole Foods entering the area, its days as a hipster mecca might be numbered. For the time being, though, Williamsburg is still home to charming shops like Catbird for hard-to-find jewelry, Life:Curated for a nice variety of indie-focused gifts, and The Hill-Side for a smart selection of menswear items. Throughout the neighborhood, you’ll find plenty of coffee shops (from Blue Bottle to Toby’s Estate) that’ll help fuel your day.

Best neighborhood if you’re shopping for someone with Champagne tastes: Upper East Side
Head to Madison Avenue (between E 59th and E 90th streets), and you’ll find a big selection of high-end shopping offering a variety of luxury goods. Big names like Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch all have boutiques in the area, with various deals planned for the shopping holiday. The neighborhood is also home to Barneys as well as Fivestory, the small department store which offers a curated selection of clothing, accessories and items for the home.

Best neighborhood if you’re only sort of interested in shopping: West Village
Yes, this charming part of the city features a nice selection of boutiques (Marc Jacobs, Diptyque and the original C.O. Bigelow, to name a few), but the West Village is also home to even more cozy cafes and coffee shops. If you’d rather spend the day strolling the streets and popping into shops in between getting java at Birch Coffee, lunch at Cafe Cluny and sweets at Magnolia Bakery, this ‘hood is your go-to spot.
