Northwest native and soccer pro Hope Solo with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

By Erin Behan

If you’ve been following “Dancing with the Stars,” you know that Northwest native and soccer pro, Hope Solo, has been dazzling the judges (OK some weeks more than others) with her moves. But where can Seattle visitors go to show off their own dance moves in the Emerald City?

On the traditional end of the dance spectrum, there’s Sonny Newman’s Dance Hall. This is where Seattleites turn to fulfill a “Dancing with the Stars”-type dream–or just a desire to not look like a total buffoon on the classical dance floor. Known for its tango classes, the club also hosts a swing and blues night (first Friday of the month), waltz night (second Friday of the month) and swing night (every Monday).Of course, there’s more to dance than the tango, how about the two-step? At the Cuff, gay men get their line dance on every Friday night from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The giant club has several bars and a patio (heated in winter) for a breather. FYI to the preppy set: Leave your Dockers at home as the floor will be littered with Levis and leather.

Lo Fi Performance Gallery has none of the formality of Sonny Newman’s, nor the unofficial dress code of the Cuff. Instead, it’s an anything goes dance party with some of the more serious music lovers in the city. Tuesday’s “Stop Biting” electronic and hip-hop dance party, The Funk Dance party, Brit-pop nights — whatever the dance flavor of the evening, there will be people moving and grooving. The energy is infectious, and nobody expects TV-perfect dance moves.

Sometimes a dance club just needs to be a dance club, with loud music, girls in short skirts and guys looking to score. Welcome to the bi-level Trinity Nightclub in Pioneer Square. With three rooms and a large VIP room, there’s room to shake it. Whether you like house, dubstep, hip-hop or Top 40, bust a move. No one’s judging.
