Sandals Emerald Bay is one of many off-the-radar spots on the Bahamas’ seriously scenic Out Islands.

By Jennifer Olvera

When planning a Bahamas vacation, there’s much to explore beyond tourist-favored destinations, like Nassau-Paradise Island and Grand Bahama Island. Comprised of more than 700 islands, the Bahamas’ more secluded “Out Islands” are a perfect paradise for divers, nature lovers and all those in search of off-the-radar experiences.

Abaco Islands
Water-sports enthusiasts, for example, can revel in the oceanfront hideaways and nationalparks on the Abaco Islands, located in the northern Bahamas. Among the most popular are deep-sea fishing, sailing, snorkeling and diving. Admittedly, though, the powder-white sands beg for straight-up relaxation.

Exuma archipelago
On the other hand, the Exuma archipelago – a string of over 300 islands, or cays – features posh, couple-friendly all-inclusive resorts, like the Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma. Favored by canoodling lovebirds, the resort spells romance with its idyllic oceanfront setting, and features a stunning, expansive pool and a Greg Norman-designed golf course.

Harbour Island
Then again, if your Bahamas vacation demands colorful, New England-style architecture, Harbour Island is a pitch-perfect pick. Located off of Eleuthera’s northeast coast, this serene, pink-sand island features quaint boutique hotels and resorts (such as the  Pink Sands Resort) clear, dive-ready water and umpteen places to dine fine (The Rock House) or taste local flavor (Ma Ruby’s).
