One absolute truth about cruises: There’s something for just about everyone. This broad appeal also applies to the selection of staterooms. Cruise ships feature a wide range of stateroom categories, but the best one for you all depends on the type of cruise experience you’re after, whether it be excitement, relaxation or both.

Location, location, location
Unlike hotels, cruises let you choose the location of your room. Think about how you want to spend your time and place yourself accordingly. If you plan on going to the shops and casino often, pick a room that’s convenient to those attractions. For a quiet setting, choose a room away from the main activities or find refuge in one of the exclusive luxury enclaves like NCL’s The Haven. And of course, factor in how important having an ocean view is to you.

Amenities
If you’re looking at your room as a place to sleep between on-board adventures, then the standard stateroom is your go-to. Though the most affordable, this option can provide tremendous value–  interior staterooms on the Disney Dream cruise ship include private bathrooms, sofas and flat-screen TVs. Family-size rooms are also available.

Looking for a premium home base for your vacation? Cruises also offer the high end of luxury. The 722-square-foot loft suite on the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas features a master bedroom and bath, living room, indoor and outdoor dining areas, dry bar and more.

A tailored experience
Do your research and find out if there are any unique options the ship offers that cater to you. Studio rooms aboard the Norwegian Epic, for example, feature exclusive access to a bar and common area where solo travelers can connect.
