Sky high: The Leahi Club Lounge at the Sheraton Waikiki.

By Mark Chesnut

Business travelers and vacationers craving a bit more luxury in their travels will likely welcome the news that Sheraton Hotels has poured more than $100 million into upgrades at 120 of its Club Lounges around the world, including hotels in New York City, Honolulu, Denver, Toronto, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires and Edinburgh. The refurbishing is the last phase of Sheraton’s recent $6 billion revitalization effort, which has included some $4 billion worth of new hotels and renovations in North America alone.

Among the amenities in the clubs are free breakfast, afternoon hors d’oeuvres, beverage service, flat-screen television, WiFi and an array of daily newspapers. Rates for the Club level vary, but guests may purchase an upgrade for an average of $75 extra per night.

One of the most recent lounge refurbishments took place at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers, where guests can make use of a copier, fax and printer as well as free office supplies, and the Sheraton Waikiki, where the 30th-floor Leahi Club Lounge is accessible via a glass elevator and offers views of nearby Diamond Head.

“At a time when our competitors have scaled back their offerings, Sheraton has done the opposite,” according to Hoyt Harper, global brand leader for Sheraton Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, which is a division of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. “And our timing couldn’t be better. Travel has returned to pre-crisis levels and travelers are once again focused on upgraded amenities and services as key elements of the guest experience.”
