The view is absolutely spectacular. The service is great and the pool is even better with its cocktail seats and bar at the water. The rest however is in desperate need of a makeover. The hotel must have been spectacular and a treat in the 1980's but now is is dated and old. The tiles in the bathroom are cracked and the shower rusted. The water pressures terrible and you are lucky if you get hot water. This is a negligible problem considering the heat but still. The beds, linen and pillows are fabulous and there cannot be a complaint. The room service is also great with new flower designs on the bed daily. The towels are in dire need of replacement but are clean. I really enjoyed the stay while someone else was paying but it is more of a mid level hotel, it is not a $225 per nigh hotel, it is a $125 per night hotel. Food is great except for dessert. The dessert is terrible.
This is not a 4 star DoubleTreeHilton. Nice beach, nice view from the room. Spacious room but not updated. The bathroom is a disaster. Shower never worked properly, not enough light, not enough ventilation. Noisy aircon, noisy fridge. Experienced the all inclusive which is a good idea cause there is nothing nearby. The road from the main street to the small street to get to the hotel is rough, be ready! Incompetent but nice staff. Good internet speed but not stable.
Very nice Hotel with super friendly staff! Breakfast was unbelievable good. Nice place Witwe Great view on the Indian Ocean. The only Problem in Zanzibar are the missing ATMs and the high costs to get money from Credit Card (normaly 10%).
Some of the staff at this hotel were great, don't get me wrong, however, some are simply appalling and have no idea of customer service. You can say TIA all you like. Myself and 4 colleagues from work stayed here after a successful summit of Kilimanjaro. We booked here to relax and unwind. The first issue was when one of our party had his room canceled. For some reason there had been an issue with his payment so they texted him two days before to ask him to call. We were on the mountain so this text never reached him. The 2nd issue was simply the SLOOWWWW service. I know this is Africa (TIA) but this is the Hilton and it costs Hilton prices. I therefore expect Hilton service. This simply did not happen. The 3rd issue was the poor grey parrot in reception. WHERE IN THIS DAY AND AGE IS THERE A PLACE FOR A BEAUTIFUL BIRD TO LIVE ITS LIFE IN A DEPRESSINGLY SMALL ENCLOSURE IN A HOTEL RECEPTION? I found this to be simply appalling. I last witnessed such animal cruelty in a Hotel in Thailand when I saw a poor macaque in cage in the hotel grounds. I just wanted to free the poor thing. The next issue was being overcharged for items in the Fisherman's Grill. We were meant to be give 20% off all items but we were charged full price. No refund was given despite numerous emails from different representatives of both Hilton and the hotel. I also left my charger in the room. After around 20 emails, again to different people, I was told it would be sent back to me. In the end I received one but it wasn't mine. I was sent a European 2 PIN charger when mine was a UK 3 PIN. I was then told that it was mine and I am wrong. Appalling customer service again. The final issue was the sheer disregard for the local area/people. The hotel is accessible via a deeply rutted and frankly terrible road. Where is the social responsibility from this place? They should be putting some money into the local area to benefit the local community but they simply don't seem to care. I would avoid this place and stay somewhere with more of a conscience. I will never seek out Hilton in the future. I'd rather stay somewhere chic and local or if I have to chose a chain I'd choose Citizen M, Marriott or Intercontinental.
Very welcoming and attentive staff! This is four stars, but the service is five-star! The rooms are decent, thought the bathrooms could use some work-but they were kept in decent condition and very clean by the housekeeping staff. The beach is nice and there are some nearby places to walk to right along the beach if you decide to venture out of the hotel premises.
This hotel is situated at the North of the Island near the fishing village of Nungwi. It is about an hour to hour and a half from the airport. The hotel arranged transfers through Exotic Tours. (You may get a taxi from the village cheaper). You will see all the wooden fishing boats anchored on the sea in front and adjacent to the hotel, which gives it a nice rustic feel. To see the sunsets you need to be sitting on the beach wall, but they are worth it. The road to the hotel from the village is a very bumpy dirt track , even the driver stated you will get a Zanzibar back massage going down it. The village is poor, with just bumpy dirt roads going through it and hole in the wall type of tourist shops selling local arts and crafts. There is a pharmacy and a couple of very small supermarkets. The village is safe to walk around and the people friendly. The hotel is raised some 6ft+ above the beach and has a wall separating the two. The beach has fairly sharp sand and stones so take beach/swimming shoes with you to avoid cutting your feet open. Be aware that the tide goes out 5-600m on low tide but will crash up against the wall for high tide, which you will only have for about half a day. (See photos) If you are expecting to swim in the sea all day this is not going to happen, but if you like paddling around in ankle deep water looking for shells and the like this will be up your street. The hotel is a small complex with just one swimming pool with a swim-up bar. It is secure and has 24 hour security guards who are excellent, and do a good job keeping the hawkers away from you, and you will feel safe! On arrival at the hotel you will be offered a hot biscuit, cold drink and cold towels to was you face on. The reception staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. All the staff are friendly smiling and happy in their work, and do what they can to make your stay relaxed enjoyable and stress free. There is a waiter bar service around the pool and beach area are very good. The management staff do a great job and will come round and talk to you to ensure you are enjoying your stay and will rectify any problems if they can. We were originally booked in for bed and breakfast, but they encourage you to go all inclusive. Due to the Hilton being an international luxury hotel brand and my wife requiring gluten free options we paid the extra money and went all inclusive. In hindsight this was a mistake! The restaurant is a cafeteria style help yourself set up. There is no waiter service other than provision of drinks and clearing your plates. It is noisy as the furniture is heavy and constantly scrapes across the floor. There are no cushions on the chairs which are wooden. There is a good choice and range of food for breakfast. Lunch and diner are very samey, and they do have themed nights which do provide some variety. However, in some far as gluten free options they can only make you gluten free pancakes. There was no gluten free bread, pasta or pizza bases available which for a hotel chain of this quality is pretty poor. Every day she had to ask the chef how things had been made to ensure they did not have gluten in them. We put in a suggestion for food labelling to show what the dish contained and the management implemented it within a day which helps people with food allergies, and they should be given credit for this. However, the menu options for my wife was very limited and she got fed up of BBQ Fish, chicken and beef and fresh fruit. There was no quality food for example there were no steaks, chops, etc and most things were cooked in sauces designed for mass catering and lacked individuality. There is another a la carte restaurant on the site, which you have to pay to eat there and just get a small discount if you are all inclusive. The all inclusive drinks package only has local alcohol and not quality products which you have to pay extra for. We found most of the all inclusive choice to be unpalatable including the wine, but that is our personal opinion. There are several restaurants along the beach which will provide variety, it would also pay to bring your own duty free drink if you have a personal preference, as for soft drinks they can be purchased from the supermarkets and kept in your fridge in your room. The rooms are well equipped and comfortable beds. They provide dressing gowns, slippers, and mosquito nets. They have a bed turning down service in the evening where they spray the room with insect repellent, which is a nice touch. Our room only had a walk in shower and no bath. The rooms have TV and fridges. The Wi-FI was poor most of the time and very slow. (This may be a Island problem). The sunset bar above the cafeteria has pool tables and dart boards. There was little evening entertainment with a band coming along for two nights and a guitarist a third night out of 7. Trips are organised from the hotel, like tours around the village, snorkelling, fishing and trips to Stone Town and Prison Island. If you walk along the beach towards the lighthouse there is a lagoon where you can go swimming with turtles.(USD 20 per person). You can also hire taxis in the village to go to different places and the rates are quite reasonable and can be negotiated. All in all it was an enjoyable stay despite the criticism of the food and drink, which is entirely down to the staff there.
Great location in the north of the island (approx. 1h drive). Staff was extraordinary helpful and friendly. F&B is quiet good in terms of quality and also variety (Selection of all-inclusive cocktails/ drinks could be enhanced). 24h security service at the beach is also a plus - although we always felt safe on the island. Furniture in the rooms is already a bit used but probably still at the top range of the local standard. Tidal hub can be quiet huge - like on the whole island. However the sea was accessible at least half of each day. The other time you can watch the sea life by a beach walk. I also recommend to walk down the beach to the Z hotel to have a drink at their rooftop terrace. I recommend to take part in the village walk which is offered by the hotel team to experience the closer proximity of the premises. As we also visited the LHW hotel on the island the Doubletree seems really to be one of the best premises on the island - considering the location, premises and services.
Double Tree Nungwi offers value for money with a relaxed setting and amenities that please. Staff are efficient and polite. Double Tree is situated on a wonderful stretch of beach easily accessible at low tide to other restaurants and beach bars
I guess my expectations were set way too high for this hotel and I was completely disappointed. The check-in process was horrendous, we had asked for a very early morning check-in as our flight arrived in Zanzibar at about 01:00 in the morning. The hotel had arranged a transfer which we found waiting at the airport, arrived at the hotel at about 02:00 in the morning, only to be told the room would only be ready after 12:00 midday, which was crazy. We were tired and hungry and we insisted on being given a room as mosquitoes had started feasting on us at the open reception. The eventually found a room for which a client had checkout late that night but this was only ,made available at about 04;00. The beds were not the most comfortable and the bathroom just looked like a room from a horror movie, I decided to make peace of it all but will never look up another Hilton hotel without thoroughly checking out their credentials. The food was OK and service was close to mediocre. However the hotel location is awesome with a beautiful beach front at low tide. The high tide was also a welcome spectacle with waves crushing against the concrete wall separating the beach and the hotel.
Highly recommend Hotel. Beach front is amazing. Rooms are very good. Just prepare yourself for a long journey Fromm airport to Hotel but apart from that, it’s ideally if you want to complete relax from the world.
