I have stayed at this room many times before. I would say about 10-15. I should say also that some rooms at this place are nice, and some should be illegal, even at a budget hotel in the UK. I should also say that as a student I always stay at the cheapest rate I can find because I do not have a choice. This time, I had a horrible night because of the extent of mold damp that permeates the carpet, sheets and walls in the room that they put me in. To make matters worse, the window was fixed so that it could not be opened more than 8 inches, so there was no hope in any case of bringing in some fresh air to ventilate the room. Besides all this there was no water pressure let alone hot water to speak of in the shower. I brought my concerns immediately to the management, who in turn blamed the matter on a company in Newcastle that manages their hotel group. Guests to this hotel should also be forewarned that it is an absolute firetrap. The facilities are completely outdated and there is no sprinkler system whatsoever. It occurs to me, given that they lock to windows of rooms so that they can't actually be opened, I would shudder to think what would happen if there ever were an emergency. Certainly, the management and its lackadaisical style, I highly doubt, could be relied on to make sure things are up to a decent and safe standard. I'll say it now, given the outdated and poorly maintained facilities, along with the apathy of the management, this is the Grenfell of York hotels.
It is good and not expensive hotel. Just 10 minutes by foot to center. There are some good pubs near it.
The staff were very accomodating, the room clean, bathroom spotless. Location : a 10 minute walk into the heart of York. Only negative was the lack of Wi Fi which I need when abroad even though it's a vaction I need to be able to connect with loved ones and clients back home. BTW the "lounge" is an amazing space in oak panelling with very comfortable armchairs. Breakfast was good too.
Quite convenient - few minutes walk from the city gate. Old building, small room with inadequate storage space. Not sparkling clean but staff seemed genuinely concerned at our comfort. Good breakfast available. We're confused; we grumbled a lot but in 2 days it 'grew' on us!
