What does silence cost? About 75 steps up to El Momo cabins in Windward Side. I sit here in complete peace and virtual silence on my balcony in Turtle Cabin. Sure, I hear the dove nearby or the tree frogs making one last ditch effort to hook up before the heat of the day. And I hear the eclectic music collection of some far away house wafting up the mountain side occasionally broken by remnants of an inaudible conversation or a dog bark or a child playing. Yeah, about every 10 minutes or so I hear something. Otherwise, I am completely at peace. I can sit and look out over 180 degrees of blue Caribbean, green jungle foliage, and cloud shrouded peaks in silence. The cabins are rustic and there is no A/C. There is a breeze at night that keeps the temperature well in the sleeping range and I am here at the low season in early September when it’s hottest. The owner/host here is very accommodating, the pool is cool and clean, there is a common area with a stocked honor fridge and snacks. My cabin has a 3-burner propane stove, a private fridge, and a sink for washing dishes. It is adequately supplied with pots and pans, some reading materials, citronella candles, and a few basics. It is exactly as billed. There was a tropical storm here last week but surprisingly, still no mosquitos. I hear they are rare here. OK, there are the steps. Before making reservations, go do 6 floors in your office building. If you can’t do this 4 times a day, better pick somewhere else. The fact is there is about one quarter mile of 20 to 23 percent grade and another quarter mile of hills between you and town and that’s just the road. There’s still the 72 steps. It’s up hill to get home and I walked it more than once. I also got a bunch of rides from the locals by holding out a thumb. So, well worth it for me. I loved El Momo and would recommend it to anyone on a budget or just tired of the noise. The staff is great with local advice nad insight. The rooms while rustic are comfortable and very quiet. The view is spectacular. Just consider the steps the hotel gym and you’re good to go.
Definitely worth visiting!! Do be prepared to climb many steps, but it’s such a peaceful place. My cottage was so cute and the views were amazing. Everyone on Saba is so very friendly. The owners were kind and their breakfast was delicious.
Fantastic hosts who are not only friendly but also help you out when needed. The cottages are as described by the owners - I think it’s gorgeous. You could call them rustic but I think they are better than that. I found them very private too. If you want company you can hang out in the lounge area. The cottages and bathrooms are Clean! The views are great! Yes steps up - but hey you are in Saba! I loved this place.
So, my wife and I are now in the final days of our three week holiday on Saba, staying at rather lovely El Momo. Trust me, I did extensive homework prior to this holiday, and I can firmly state El Momo has the best deal on the island. Having said this, if you are looking for a 5-star hotel, with your tea wallah, open-and-shutting door-wallah, bartender wallah, shoe polish wallah, then most certainly do not go. If you are looking for some peace & quiet and tranquility, combined with the great hospitality of the dynamic couple running the place, then do go. El Momo is a mere 10 minutes walk away from Windwardside - the place for a range of restaurants and bars, also the starting point for wonderful tropical rainforest trails. The 10 minutes walk is down hill by the way, but - wait for it - definitely uphill on the way back. (There are always locals quite willing to give you a lift.) Then, when arriving at El Momo's, there are the 60 odd steep steps to negotiate. So, not that great for those who are physically impaired in the lower regions. El Momo has a glorious pool and decently stocked honesty bar. Breakfast (as an extra) is eggs to order, fresh fruit, homemade yoghurt and all the other trimmings, The owners (Dutch couple Eva and Andries - both fluent in English) are always there to advise on anything the island concerning. All in all we have had a brilliant holiday, for a large part thanks to Eva and Andries. (Check out the website.)
I can’t say enough good things about this place; in all of my travels I’ve never felt so welcomed as a solo traveler as I did here. The owners are incredibly kind and helpful, and would often greet me with a cheerful “welcome home!” as I reached the top of the stairs. Yes, the accommodations are basic, but everything was clean and there was nothing I found myself missing during my 6-night stay here. The views from the cottages, the peace and quiet of the surroundings, and the welcome you’ll receive at the top are all well worth the climb!
Firstly read the description provided by the owners. We did and read the reviews and El Momo exceeded our expectations. We were looking for something as close to nature as possible with some mod cons like WiFi and electric and that's exactly what we got and more. This place requires a certain level of fitness. It's built into a hillside up 65 steps to get to reception.some physical effort to required but my goodness are you rewarded! Rooms with amazing views of the hills and across the sea. I have never had a room before where I could lay in bed with the doors wide open gazing out across the sea and staring at the stars at night whilst drifting off to sleep to the song of the wildlife. As for the outside showering experience shared with the tree frogs and watched by the iguanas in the trees.... that was unique and so special. From the honesty bar/shopping essentials to the welcoming and friendly atmosphere generated by the hosts this was such a refreshing and relaxing place to stay. The weather was not on our side and very wet and windy but this did not spoil our time there and I left feeling completely relaxed. We even managed to get a swim in the pool when the sun finally showed itself just before we left. And yes....tgere are at times bits of leaf blown into the pool and the owners regularly try and clean it but you are in the midst of trees on a windy island.... pol debris is going to happen at times and to be honest it generally won't do any harm! Back to nature at its best :-) Please keep doing what you do and don't change :-)
If you are looking for a comfortable stay with a nice pool on a beautiful island, do yourself a favor and avoid this place. I couldn't believe this place was open when I arrived. Everything looks rotten and overgrown and the pool area is filthy. The beds in the room are akin to those of a hunting camp with no power. The showers are open to the outdoors with moss and mold surrounding your feet. The owner made an inappropriate comment within 5 minutes of arriving. I ended up leaving after one night.
I recently visited the Dutch island of Saba for scuba diving and stayed at El Momo Cottages in Windwardside. High up on Booby Hill, the view from El Momo is simply fantastic. The lodging is exactly as described on the El Momo website. The cottages are rustic but neat and clean. Mine (Lizard Cottage) was unique in that the bathroom sink was built into the hill on the walk between my sleeping quarters and the toilet/shower area. I stayed 7 nights at El Momo. My host Andris is very friendly and makes everyone feel welcome. Breakfast was always served on time at 7:30 each morning, giving me plenty of time to eat and then be picked up by the taxi for the trip to the pier. I hope to return to Saba for another dive trip and will include El Momo in my plans as my lodging choice.
Many places in Saba have a good view this place has a great view , I little higher the all the other places in the windward side ( only stay on the windward side ) , the windward side is where all the action is , restaurants, museums , dive shops , stores . When I was reading about the bathroom outside the room I was concerned but now I find the system pretty cool . Here is how it works , you get a room with one or two beds , windows on at least two sides ( for breeze ) . Then shower , sink and toilet are from rain water . Outside your room is a wood gate , you can close this gate and have total privacy as you leave your room and go to the sink right behind the room , it has a roof over it and power and lights . Next to that you have a room with the shower and toilet , again it has a gate next to the patio that can give you privacy as you go to the shower . Bottom line is you have total privacy to sink and shower . The only concern is what other s have said a lot of steps . It is hard the first time ( blame the luggage ) after that you get use to it and it is the price you pay for a wonderful view with total privacy . I think I lost a few pounds staying here ( a good thing I could lose a few ) part of my stay here I was staying at a place in town and it was very noisy . They serve breakfast every morning, simple but nice , they have an honor bar so if you need water , a beer or snacks you go to the open kitchen and take what you need but mark it down in a ledger , when you leave you pay your honor bar bill . The service is friendly and very helpful , he even explained the differences in Dutch politics from islands like Saba that are parts of the kingdom vs islands like st Maarten that are similar to us territories like Puerto Rico and Guam .
We stayed on Saba Island for 8 nights and loved every minute of our stay ..... Saba is a wonderful and very special Island, and El Momo a wonderful and special place. The cottages are simple, and have all that you could possible want or need: great views (especially from the shower), good beds, a simple but efficient kitchenette (some cottages only), a handy self-service bar, free WiFi, and quick walking distance to the Windwardside town centre (coming back is a bit of a climb.....but what a beautiful walk it is!). Thanks Eva and Andries for being such wonderful hosts!
