Great little break at The Royal, recommended by a friend who'd stayed very recently. Lovely hotel, currently undergoing a renovation but didn’t cause any issues for us. Room Was spotless, great size overlooking the sea. Bed was super comfy and a good sized modern bathroom with shower and separate bath. Warm rooms, great bar area and the restaurant looked decent and well priced however we didn’t eat on the premises. Staff were brilliant, friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Would absolutely visit again!

Staff were lovely and very helpful. The room was lovely and clean, the only issue was the heated towel radiator which looked very much like it had seen better days. Other than that thoroughly enjoyed it.

Check in was ok, we were told breakfast was any time until 10am and the breakfast would be there until 10.30am. Staff throughout the stay were generally very friendly. Shower didn't drain well - had to turn it off quite often to make sure the tray didn't overflow. The bathroom looked very old, paint flaking off the radiator, and the towel rail was so low that you couldn't put a bath towel on it. Only had one toilet roll and that was not replaced when housekeeping came - had to ask at reception for another (which was left unwrapped on the floor outside the room in the corridor). The room was far too hot with no way to adjust the temperature of the radiator. Had to open the small window which meant we heard a great deal of noise from outside. I reported this issue (and shower) to reception who said maintenance would come, but these issues were not fixed. The floorboards in the room and in the corridor outside were so creaky. At 3.30am we were woken up by a loud noise in the corridor. Then some time prior to 6.00am, the fire alarm went off. We evacuated via the nearest fire exit, which was a metal staircase outside. No staff around to assist (and there was a lady with a crutch who we were worried about behind us). We hung around outside, and we never saw a single member of staff. Very worrying. We returned when the crowd went back in, and only a fireman was able to update us - said it was a faulty sensor. Other issues but ran out of room & no response to my feedback form.
Towel rail too low to be used for bath towels
Nowhere to hang do not disturb sign - and no lock inside door
Evacuation with no staff to be seen
Filter from inside kettle which looked disgusting

The room was freezing, felt like the window was open it was that cold and that's with the heating on. Bathroom was like a freezer. Twin room so I utilised both duvets over the 1 bed. Workers woke me in the morning as there is renovations occurring, chatting in the corridors before 9am.

The room was better than advertised as the bathroom was upgraded from the picture when booking. We paid for a sea view, scaffolding did obscure it a little but we could still see the sea. A light above the bathroom mirror would be good as the only light was above and shadowed your face. All staff we came across were lovely and helpful. Maybe a seperate range of lite bites in the bar would be nice. Parking was very good around the hotel as it is free Nov-March!

The hotel is very dated, supposedly had a refurbishment but just papered over the cracks. We had a view of the harbour but could hardly see through the filthy windows, old furnishings in rooms , mucky carpets, moldy silicon around shower , woodwork rotting. Disappointing great potential but won't be staying again .

It’s great to see the Royal being improved. Was disappointed that we paid for a sea view to find our view obscured with scaffolding. Had we known we wouldn’t have paid the extra for this view. Hotel staff said this is mentioned on their own website but not on hotel booking sites which is disappointing. Check if you’re about to pay the extra.
