Pousada de Viseu - Historic Hotel4.0 out of 5.0

This Pousada was in earlier days a hospital. It has been delightfully renovated around a central courtyard. We had a King-size room that overlooked Viseu. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, especially those on the reception desk. Just one problem: We booked for dinner at 8pm and only received our food around 10pm! The staff were clearly embarrassed.
Hotel with a fantastic architecture and a very professional service. The rooms are very comfortable. The food is delicious. I loved every minute. Highly recommend. I also recommend a visit to the city of Viseu.
Stayed at the Pousada for 5 nights while visiting the local wine region. The hotel is located in a former hospital that has been beautifully renovated. The outside wall of our room was 5 foot thick granite. Impressive. Our suite was very spacious and well appointed. Plenty of room to spread out and be comfortable. The bathroom had a shower over a tub as well as a separate roomy shower. The toilet was in a separate room, a nice feature. We ate one dinner in the restaurant, and the food was good, if relatively expensive, and the service fine. Hotel staff was helpful. Many restaurants were within easy walking distance. Ample parking was available in the hotel lots. The one reason I didn't rate the hotel 5 stars was because of the bed. It was large, with fine linens, but very hard and uncomfortable. Mrs.Tahoe Steve woke up sore every morning. Also, the room was short on electrical outlets, and there wasn't one near the bathroom sink, which made it hard for the wife to get ready in the morning.
Tucked into a quiet corner of downtown Viseu, the Pousada de Viseu is a great base for exploring the city and region. It's only about a 10-minute walk from the hotel to parts of the historic district, and it's fairly close to several roads leading out to the countryside. The building itself, a refurbished former hospital, is a very interesting space. The central courtyard, in particular, is an excellent location for meals or just relaxing. During our visit, a very nice exhibit of large paintings by a local artist added a great touch to the setting. Service was better-than-average throughout our stay. We want to give special shout-outs to Ivan at the from desk, who was very helpful with many logistical questions, and to Francisco and Daniela in the dining room, who were very gracious and friendly servers. Our room (418) was spacious with a good-sized bathroom. While it didn't have a lot of special character, it was a quiet spot and perfectly comfortable. Finally, the outdoor pool on the side of the building was a nice place to hang out at the end of the day (earlier in the afternoon might be busier). All in all, this was a very good base for our stay in Viseu, and we'd definitely recommend it to others as a base in the area.
We are on an 11 day Autumn tour of Portuguese Pousadas. This hotel is a more modern re build than our more historic Pousada at Guimaraes and has a great structure built around a central courtyard. The en suite rooms are large with high ceilings. Our room was on the 2 nd floor overlooking the back car park. The door lock system was by card and could be troublesome. The room felt too warm and we had the air con system on all night and it was rather noisy so we did not get the best sleep. The staff were friendly and the reception staff spoke English. We took advantage of the special price of 55 euros fora men’s massage. I would have used the indoor heated pool bout it was very small and children were using it. The outside pool looked lovely but it was not heated. The town / historic area and shops are within 10 minute walk down the hill. There is a super market a few minutes away in the opposite directions. You can get a map from reception. There is free WiFi. The menu varies daily, and is buffet style. Our tables were in a separate room off the atrium. Other couples ate in the open atrium in darker light. The price per evening meal was lower than our previous Pousada but the choice was more limited, particularly in the starters. You could use the coffee machine yourself. We had music on the Friday and Saturday night- a saxophonist than a pianist. There was sport on the t v. There was a fridge, safe, toiletries and fruit in the room.
This hotel is very impressive from the outside and this continues once you step through the doors. The central atrium has been covered with a glass roof which really adds to the atmosphere pf the place. We had a top floor room with a large terrace from which we saw the last of the recent wildfires. The room was huge and well appointed, as was the bathroom. I was worried it would be noisy as it overlooked the central atrium but it was surprisingly quiet. Breakfast was the same as at the other Pousadas we stayed at.
This hotel was build in the recovered building of the old hospital of Viseu. The overall architecture and the smart use of the old inner courtyard to make the bar-restaurant area makes this a lovely place to stay at. Rooms are spacious with a discrete and tasteful decor. Staff was very polite and cared for our needs. Overall the price/quality ratio is quite good, since the stay offers a full buffet breakfast and access to sauna,/jacuzzi room in the spa and use of gym equipment. Furthermore, it is a few minutes walk to the heart of Viseu where you can visit the cathedral or simply enjoy the delicious local food in a variety of restaurants, from the more traditional ones to the new wave/fusion places. As a few minor points, spa area could benefit from investment in more equipment: there is no place to hang towels at the jacuzzi room and there are only two chairs. If two guests decide to place their towels in the chair while having their bath, the room is fully in-operational regarding towel placement. Another issue was that central air conditioning room in the rooms made the air too dry and caused me some breathing issues since I have allergies. Opening the window was the only option but then one had to suffer from street noise.
This place is very average. Rooms are large but my laptop screen is larger than the TVs. If you need an iron, there are no ironing boards. Lights are off most the time in the corridors so very dark. Air conditioner in the room sounds like a jet engine. Food in the restaurant for dinner is very average and would suggest going outside.
Very comfortable, big, clean room with a breathtaking view over the city. Modern, clean bathroom with everything you need.Very good breakfast. Amazing dinner at the restaurant with special menu based on the fruit of the season - chestnut. The historical building was very well rebuilt, respecting the original plan and materials. Most important is the staff's performance: very professional, helpful and nice. The day we stayed in, there was a terrible fire surrounding the area. Late at night a group of about 50 tourists who had been trapped by the fire when travelling to another "pousada" arrived here to take shelter. The whole staff did an amazing job, working overtime, and in the morning they had the same smile on their faces, being helpful as always, despite the few hours' sleep and rest. Congratulations!
Nice stay for a night. Spacy room, view on the swiming pool. This is a charming place. Staff very nice and helful, good breakfast, I ask for a iron because it was not includes inside rooms. They gave it to me but not with an ironing table, it was a shame to iron in a bed.
