When we arrived in Punta del Est we stoped at the tourist information center and the lady informed us that in the central area the cheapeast hotel we could find would cost at least US$150. We went in te winter time and we found out that she was wrong, there were plenty of Hotels and much cheaper. We got two conecting room for US$ 80. But you can find even better deals in other places. The Algambra was Nice, it is simple but clean and the breakfast was good. The location is a plus.
We have stayed here twice - once at the very peak of high season (Jan.2014) and once at the nadir of the low season (July 2014). The price was the same. The room is not fancy - but who comes to Punta to stay in the room? Look out the window and you are delighted by the beach two short blocks away - Playa Brava - the beach with a great break and thus lots of surfers. Our room had a good sized fridge, part of a small kitchenette. Our beds were very comfortable. The breakfast is fine, again, not fancy. The folks who work at the Alhambra are incredibly sweet and helpful. Their English is excellent and they helped us with communications that had nothing to do with our stay - (realtors? doctors? they're happy to help). They authentically seem to enjoy helping out tourists, even with finding other housing! The convenient underground parking (served by an elevator) is especially precious during high season when parking on the street is impossible. And the location smack in the center of all the good stuff: restaurants, shops, all very walkable is a delight. A friend from Buenos Aires recently came to Punta del Este and was so excited by finding a great value for money. Guess what? She found Hotel Alhambra, too!
Our hotel room was gross. Very dated, felt old and stuffy. Bathroom was ancient, smelly and didnt feel clean. The only reason we stayed here is because we booked late and it was the only place available. I would not stay here again. The good thing about the hotel is the location. Close to the main street and the beaches. We were able to walk to and from the bus station with two large suitcases.
We visited Punta in high season (Christmas time) so most accommodation was booked / very expensive. At the Alhambra we had a small room with 3 single beds and it was clean and basic. The staff were friendly and the location was great. Right by the beaches and main street. There was a lot of street noise (firecrackers and people) but it was the festive season. The WIFI was fine - beware of the elevator - the doors close quite aggressively .... we used the stairs!
Hotel Alhambra is centrally located and within walking distance to the bus station. It's between the Playa Brava beach and main walking avenue of the Punta del Este peninsula. Our room looked like it was cool back in the 1960's-1970's. It's in need of some serious updating, especially the lock & key door knob that was really difficult to open and the missing knob on the AC. Staff was friendly and courteous. The free hotel decent was pretty good with fruits, yogurt, pastries, & ham cold cuts. I would stay here again due to the location and price if my wife and I were to ever go back to Punta del Este, but we found the city to be a bit boring and saw it was more geared towards those in retirement. We didn't know until we got to Punta del Este that the younger, more hip crowd hangs out down the road in La Barra.
If you are looking for a no-frills place, seek no more. The place is clean, the staff is helpful, and it is centrally located. They also have free parking, which is a plus. Our room was very small, had no safe, the bed was not very comfortable, and the door locks didn't inspire confidence.
My husband was born in Uruguay. He wanted to spend three days in Punta del Este because he wanted a place that felt like "home". He knew that in the city's hotels were expensive. I helped him to find hotels from the Trip Advisor. So, He chose Hotel Alhambra because of location and lower prices. I did'nt like the 70's style for everything and the bed was'nt soft. But my husband like it because it was'nt expensive. Also, They do have some parking in the basement, a very good breakfast, and good location near the beach. You might say "It sound like a "Brady Bunch Hotel".
Good service, rooms were very clean, simple but nice breakfast, excellent location. But the rooms were small and it was expensive for its standard, but cheaper than others in high season.
I came into my stay at the Alhambra thinking at worst, it would be a dated place that would be serviceable enough, especially in peak season. I expected comfortable beds, adequate space, and a clean, attentive staff. Well, it was clean and the staff was fine, but that's about it. I got over the '70s style carpeting and decor, but the terribly weak mattress and tiny room weren't so forgiveable. It's unfortunate because it's certainly affordable and very close to the beach, and I'm not sure how many options there are during high season. But despite the nice staff and cleanliness I can't recommend it, as it was such a let-down even with my rather low expectations.
Ok, this is not a Ritz by any stretch of the imagination. That being said, if you want to stay in a hotel with great service, an amazing location and a decent price during peak Punta time, Alhambra Hotel is your place. It is on a one way street about a block from the beach. If you go West down calle 28 (where the hotel is on), you will run into many shops and some restaurants. If you go down calle 28 as far as it goes and make a left (South), you will see restaurants overlooking the water and the yacht harbor. Eat there for beautiful sunsets. One of the best things about this hotel is not the oh so 70s decor, but the fact that they have an underground parking garage. My husband and I took full advantage of this because we used our car daily to travel to La Barra and Bikini Beach. I rated the rooms a little below average because they were very small and in dire need of upgrades. Regardless, we were never in our rooms except to sleep. We felt very safe and decently comfortable. If you want high class, stay at the Conrad, AWA, L'ermitage, or Mantra--but be prepared to pay a pretty penny in peak season. The do have a computer with free internet access.
