Hotel is well situated for local beach and the famous shopping strip on North Cliff. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Pool great, rooms are nice (although the floor needs attention and towels are a little tired) but overall it is clean and fresh with good facilities such as yoga and massage.
Beautiful hotel, peaceful and calm. Large comfortable rooms with stunning views and a lovely pool. Incredibly helpful staff who will help with anything you need. A wonderful 10 day holiday located in a perfect position to get to everything. I will be back.
We stayed at the Gateway two days last week and the day we had to leave for Kovalam there was a transport strike, a "jartal", and the agency called the day before and tried to force us to leave at 530 AM because according to them the situation could be dangerous with stone throwing etcetera. There WAS a transport strike, but if we had obeyed the agency that would have meant us arriving in Trivandrum in the middle of the demostrations, so I concluded the agency just wanted to get rid of us and their responsibility as we had already payed their services. So we decided to speak to the staff at the Gateway and they were supernice and agreed to a late check out so we could stay that day at the beach and then leave. Thank you Ms Ashwathy and Mr Andrews, you really were very very gracious and professional. The hotel is lovely, yes a bit of restauration is needed but arent we all in need of restauration ¡ the breakfast is wonderful and the view is awesome. Will see you again hopefully soon !
A disappointing stay. Our room was dark and gloomy and many of the amenities didn't work properly including the phone, TV and kettle. The toilet seat flush had been damaged and the tap on the basin was loose. This hotel needs a makeover. This didn't seem like a luxury hotel.
It was a pleasant stay. I believe its one of the a little neglected property of Taj. The finesse is missing. The 3 suite rooms upstairs has a better view. The staffs are hospitable. The food is ok ok. I won't rate over the top quality. A little touch up should be done for room maintainance .
Hi kudoos great hospitality Nice rooms poolside bar And a good view to sea from the room and the lobby Nice ayurvrda with packages only thing in my stay is badminton courts are not maintained properly over all good
As far as standards go, The Gateway scores on the high side of average - it's big and well maintained, the views from the upstairs rooms look beyond the pool area out to the Arabian Sea. Check-in is brisk, staff are pleasant and requests attended to very promptly. My only niggle was the grubby outfits that the chefs wore when they cooked the breakfasts outside every morning (we were there for four) - that would be so easy to fix. It's well located, just a quick zoom in a rickshaw to the cliffside walk or to downtown Varkala, a longer ride to a backwater paddle will require a car. The cliffside has food, shops and a stunning view - the touts are pretty mild and friendly, the food varies but the view of the sea and beach below are worth a visit alone.
2 German friends and I drove our rented scooters from Cochi to Varkala. It took us 8 hours to get there. Keep in mind we were in the monsoon period and it rained a bit (4-5 hours out of 8). Hope you enjoy Varkala
We stayed at the Gateway for 4 nights. The room was good, not a sea view which would have been better but we had a nice little terrace with chairs and a small garden which was lovely. Shower was brilliant and loads of nice toiletries which were topped up each day. The location is lovely, on top of the cliff with a 5min walk down to the beach walking down a very narrow path along side a stream. The downside is communication between management and staff is difficult and especially the waiters not understanding English. The breakfasts were dire, difficult to find something nice to eat, toast and marmalade were good, fresh fruit was very limited and croissants and cakes were all stale and hard!
great hotel in super location looking down to the beach. wonderful food and friendly efficient staff. some rooms better than others and parts of hotel need a bit of TLC, but overall still very good. 1 hour by taxi from Trivandrum Airport. I would recommend Chandhu taxis (9995772292) for 1400 rupees airport pick up. Chandhu is very reliable , polite and speaks good English.Taxi is modern and has air con.
