As a special treat we left the South of Tenerife and headed to the greener North to stay for one night in the acclaimed 5 star hotel Mencey with high expectations of the standard of service we might expect. On arrival the receptionist was friendly and helpful when I asked to pay the appropriate amount to upgrade to a garden room instead of the city view. She completed the check in process and advised that we should relax in the lounge area for a few minutes until housekeeping came back to her to advise that they had finished cleaning room 387. We arrived about 50 minutes prior to check in time. So we went off to relax and waited and waited for 45 minutes or so and decided to approach reception to enquire about our room. The receptionist we had dealt with was nowhere to be seen so we had to explain that we had been waiting for sometime and no one had come to advise about the room. No explanation was forthcoming and the other receptionist issued the keys. OK we get to the room and after 20 minutes look for the bathrobes to pop down to the pool area. But can't find the bath robes.... Phoned reception and advised they would contact housekeeping and send some up.... and I'm just about to ring again because they haven't arrived and the sun is quickly disappearing on the pool area!!! Interestingly no one seems to care ...so not a good impression and we've only been here less than 3 hours. So disappointing to have been let down already...still no robes....

This is my second time at the Mencey in the last couple of months. It's a very comfortable place in the colonial style. The pool is lovely, as is the spa. The rooms are comfortable and modestly priced, unlike the drinks at the bar (4.50€ for a small beer!). Breakfast is excellent. The staff are all very helpful, with my particular praise going to Miriam who could run master classes on how to be a great receptionist. All in all, very good value for money.

The hotel is in an excellent location. A quiet area with a beautiful park across the road and yet easy access into town and to transport and restaurants. We had arranged a transfer from tenerife south airport but there is a bus 111 that goes from main bus station and takes just over one hour and costs 10 euros. A taxi to bus station from hotel costs 5 euros. We ate one night in the restaurant at hotel and the food was good but we discovered the excellent Cucina Urbana across the road, loved it and ate there each night. There is a free taxi service from hotel to beach and that is worth a trip. We didn't book a cab back as there is a frequent bus service . Used the well equipped gym a lot and also attended some classes: yoga, pilates, stretching. Breakfast was plentiful with food to suit most people. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. We used the tourist information desk in hotel and booked a trip to Tiende and also the hop on, hop off bus. The later costs 18 euros and is a good introduction to Santa Cruz. Plus it includes a walking tour and free entry to some attractions. Would definitely recommend the Palmetum. Small gripes: lack of info for example no TV channel guide in info pack. Also kettle in room would be nice but obviously not common outside UK. We enjoyed having drinks by the Pool and in the bar. Hot drinks always came with biscuits and cold drinks with olives and crisps. Would definitely recommend.

A great classic hotel at it best. Great service, brilliant breakfast and great dinner. The location is optimal. Spend some hours in the garden, you are in the center of a town but it feels like you are in the countryside.

Staying for 9 nights and room is nice but not 5 star and reason being for the poor soaps and shampoo etc along with no tea making facilities as we asked and no problem bring to god room so why just leave them in the room. Hair dryer keeps stopping why poor quality as again asked and no problem bringing one to the room. We are staying on a garden view room and it is quite and a nice view. The breakfast is only 3 stars and reason is food is cold plus for the last three days have asked why the hot water for tea making is cold as again staff are great and they bring hot water in in a pot. I did not eat in the hotel and reason was because of the poor standard of breakfast and because the hot food is cold as this is a serious health hazard. Staff are friendly and they are great to deal with but need more staff o at breakfast as they work very hard. On the area great for couples wanting a relaxing time as a few nice restaurants outside plus nice park and walk to the port but not an area for children. Overall a good stay.

To start the arrival at this hotel was challenging because there is nowhere to stop and unload your bags ( there is but it is always full even when there was no one actually checking in - management need to monitor it better!) so we had to lug our bags around which was frustrating. Our room a huge suite - which seemed great but after we complained that it was too hot they admitted that the air conditioning unit wasn't big enough to handle the space!! They did, however, offer us a different room - which was tiny and really basic - and then provided us with a fans which worked perfectly. So they certainly looked for a solution. The food was very good and the dining room staff great - but the staff on the patio bar were quite surly. At the end of the day it was certainly good but not great.

We were delighted by the view, the breakfast was excellent and the spa really nice! The area near the Hotel had some nice restaurants and a beautiful garden! Thank you for your kindness and hospitality :-)

Stayed two nights here, quiet and pleasant room. Breakfast a bit pricey but worth it. Make sure to check that if there are larger conventions held at the hotel before booking a stay. Lovely, peaceful poolside!

Chose this for ease of access to airport and it is ideal from that point of view. Parking available but hard to find on arrival (park in 15 min zone and ask hotel for directions). Access to car park at 0500 challenging! Our room was nice but standards face the port which isn't too appealing. Nice pool and outdoor bar although service was a bit slow. There's a restaurant for the pension folk and a separate a la crate which opens at 2000. We were one of two parties there so plenty of attention and nice food. Reception staff not very helpful on arrival - no one at the door to help with luggage.

Just returned from a seven night stay at this hotel. All of the staff are so helpful nothing was to much trouble they went out of the way to make sure our stay was good. Room was lovely and was cleaned to perfection every day. Breakfast was out of this world and we loved the smoothies every morning which was handed to you upon arrival. The outside pool was well looked after with the life guard keeping everything right. Reception staff were very pleasant too. We will definitely be going back
