This hotel is ideally placed for exploring Chester and surrounding area. Luxurious and comfortable with a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere that belies an efficient and professional system behind the scenes. On arrival we were upgraded, a kind gesture on the receptionist enquiring the reason for our visit and establishing it was my wife's birthday. Our suite was everything you could wish for. Comfortable spacious and quiet. A special mention must be made for the restaurant. Wow! A lovely atmosphere and very attentive staff. I only caught names for Salvadore and Daniel but they were representative of the kind and efficient service we received. And the food! Breakfasts were fantastic and both dinners we ate here were nothing less than excellent. I cannot recommend the food too highly. Prices were fair and reasonable. It's not a cheap break but it was certainly value for money. This isn't local for us but if we visit this area again we will definitely stay here again.
The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings, with a lovely long driveway in through the golf course. The hotel itself is modern the rooms are a good size, beds very comfortable and in general a lovely place to be. The spa experience was amazing I opted for a deep tissue massage whilst my partner went for the facial lasting a blissful 55 minutes!! The spa facilities are very good although the pool did get very busy on the Saturday morning with water aerobic classes taking place. A few bad points, one of the experience showers had been closed, the cold shower in the ice room didn't work either and strangely no Jacuzzi in sight!! Our deal included a 2 course dinner on our first night in the Scottish Steakhouse restaurant in the hotel. This went somewhat wrong... We opted to upgrade to the A La Carte menu and decided on steaks, I ordered a fillet (rare) and my partner had the rump (medium well) now the price difference is huge between them so we were rather annoyed when they put the wrong steaks in front of us both, my partner not keen on the excessive blood on the plate but hey a quick change sorted that. Then we ordered a side of onion rings and had chips delivered, again quickly fixed. Pudding time and we ordered our desserts along with a double espresso for me (long night ahead) the waitress confirmed our order as 2x espresso's,we corrected her immediately only for 2 to still arrive moments later. The bill came and had 2 espresso's still on so again had to correct the waitress! She came with the bill, asked if we were paying by card and continued on, only after 10 minutes did we learn you had to go to the counter to pay, this took some time and after 2 attempts on the very dated magnetic swipe system payment was made. The rest of our stay was perfect really, paid an extra £5 for breakfast delivered to the bedroom... result! Only bad not is that on checking my bank statements this morning they charged me twice for the meal!! All i would say is that given the shear amount of payment methods available in 2017 why are they still using magnetic swipe systems!! Overall I would recommend to others...
I have just had two days and one nights stay. ( 70 of us ) Played both courses. Both very good but I think the championship course was brilliant. Fantastic views, great golf holes and in very good condition. The hotel is very nice, modern , very clean and a nice atmosphere. The rooms were spot on. Great comfy beds . We had a 3x course evening meal which was good. The breakfast was also very good. Plenty and good quality. The staff , both hotel and golf were first class. I will definitely visit and play again. That said its a nice place to stay with your partner. Lovely walks etc and the spa & leisure facilities were very good. Steve B
We stayed in this hotel for a wedding on the 7th and 8th July 2017 and the weather was very warm, we had an infant with us and pre-ordered a travel cot in the room and it was there when we arrived and the room was nice. When we checked in and went to the room (on the 3rd floor) it was like an oven and there was no air-conditioning, so I went down to get a fan and the staff accommodated us. All the fan done was blow the warm air around the room so our child was up all night due to the heat. I went to the reception first thing in the morning to try and get moved. I knew there were lots of people coming to stay for the wedding and they hadn't arrived yet so there were lots of rooms that hadn't been checked into as yet. The receptionist said she couldn't move us as there was no rooms available. This shocked me as there should have been lots available (unsure why rooms that hadn't been checked into weren't available). The second night was the same our child didn't sleep well as it was to hot. Checking out they asked was everything OK for us and I voiced my complaint, the receptionist noted the complaint and got a call the next day from someone and all they said was "sorry you had a bad stay but no one else complained". I know for a fact the guys staying in the next room had to ask for a fan also, they may not have complained but they did not have a 1 year old. Other things of note which I heard others complain of was the price of a glass of wine (one saying they paid £7.50 for a glass of the house wine, others paid £9). The bar service was very slow. Safe to say would never stay here again. Other guests at the wedding stayed at the premier inn down the road and the rooms were air-conditioned and half the price. Would not recommend staying here as the staff are unable to accommodate you. Highly recommended going to Premier Inn Northwich South instead at less than half the price and if your at a wedding the money you would save even getting a taxi is well worth it.
Lovely hotel with great staff; everyone greeted with a smile and hello. Some parts of the hotel were a bit of a maze. Stayed with a golf group of 30. 2 great courses, Championship and (better, in my humble opinion) the Premier. Breakfast was varied and good although the scrambled egg left something to be desired. Fried or poached available on request. Not too bad an idea really as both of those do not keep too well in bains marie. Dinner was a little disappointing; not too much choice and gammon overcooked . Veggies were well underdone; not even close to al dente. Wine list way overpriced for average wines. The bar had very little choice of ales. Overall a pretty decent hotel with stand out staff.
6th year that we have held our Charity Golf Day at the Macdonald Portal. Golf and BBQ and dinner all enjoyed by everyone. Gareth and Phil from the Pro Shop very helpful with organisation of the event and making sure that all went okay on the day. Thank you.
There were 24 of us in this group. we stayed for 2 nights and played 3 rounds of golf. As the organiser I would like to thank Gareth Evans who was very helpful and paid a lot of attention to detail in sorting our stay there. Everything worked well, he was easy to contact and his organisational skills excellent. Glen was also very helpful Well done to you all and thank you.
We hosted a corporate golf day here and the staff went above and beyond to ensure it was a success. I stayed overnight at the hotel in a spacious corner room on the ground floor. Very clean and comfortable. the breakfast was a good choice and very quiet as I was down there at 6.30. The reception staff were friendly however when checking out at about 7am did have to wait for a few minutes before anyone turned up, there was no bell to ring to get attention so that was a bit frustrating as I wanted to get off on the road. Would recommend.
Just returned from a four day golf break, the courses were in excellent condition. We were well looked after by all the staff, especially Salvador and the girls in the restaurant. The rooms were spacious but just lacking air conditioning, a rare complaint in England but it was exceptionally hot. All in all a great time with my golfing girlfriends.
Great weekend away with the lads, we combined a great British Lions victory with 2 days of excellent golf in beautiful surroundings. The course played extremely well both days and the weather helped no end.. Glenn was superb both prior to the day and also with all the arrangements on the day. Top food and service. Well Done
