We would have stayed here except the hotel cancelled our booking and moved us to an alternative hotel which was of ‘the same standard’ ... all without telling us. When we arrived the non-apologetic staff tried to blame the booking agency! Were clearly prepared for us to arrive as they had “all the emails sent to the booking agency”, printed off and ready, far too convenient! We were moved to a poorer standard hotel which was further from the amenities of Taormina, who restaurant was closed for dinner as they had only just opened for the season. The rooms were only made for 2-3 guests, not the four of us that were travelling, so definitely not a like for like swap. Had to get them to sort another alternative which was better, but still not the same standard - especially as the facilities (swimming pool and restaurant) were also closed! Pretentious and over-rated!!
We stayed three nights here. The room was very nice - large, quiet, and comfortable. The bathroom was very spacious. Our room was on the 'back side' of the hotel, with views to the sunrise and to Casselmola. The staff were all very nice. The breakfast was very good. The views were excellent, as was the garden.
Just back from a 4 night stay here, and we loved the hotel and it’s perfect location in the perfect place of Taormina. Car parking is available at 10€ per day. The staff are friendly, helpful and try hard to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. The view from our hotel room was fantastic, and we didn’t have an Etna view. With an Etna view it would have been stunning! The room had a nice feel and was comfortable, even if dated. During our stay, the hotel organised a very enjoyable jazz concert and delicious meal for Valentines night. We loved our stay here and would return.
My Wife and I spent a wonderful week at the hotel in early July 2017.The hotel is situated at the end of the Corso Umberto, with the town on your doorstep On our arrival we were shown to our room, which was disappointing as the view from our window was off the multi-storey car park. My Wife requested a change of room, and thankfully we were given a room with beautiful panoramic views of the town, sea and Giardini Naxos. The staff were very courteous and always helpful. We were staying on a half board basis, and can state without fear of contradiction that the breakfast and evening meals were excellent. The highlight of the hotel was the splendid pool, and the bar facilities adjacent. We would most certainly recommend this hotel and look forward to staying there again.
This centrally located hotel property has beautiful grounds, a luxurious pool area with waterfront and mountain vistas, and large spacious rooms. Elegant shopping and dining are short walks from the hotel. With a somewhat older clientele when we visited, it harkens back to the grand resort hotels of an earlier era.
The room was comfortable but the bath was deep & had no grab rails. For those of us who were unable to use the shower it was impossible to get out without our partners help.We went as a second half of a trip with Riviera travel & by this time we had gelled into a group of friends as our large tables were reserved for people travelling with particular groups. We discussed this issue. It was mainly ladies who had this problem & fortunately had strong & fit partners/husbands. The views of Mount Etna were stunning. As our room was on a corner we had 2 windows & 2 different views. Unfortunately the weather was not good & our trip up the mountain was just cloud. We did not take the last stage. Apparently it was cloudy right to the summit & the wind was extremely strong with nothing to hold on to. We would probably have been better off going only to the first stage which stops where you can view 2 craters. We saw a hoopoe in the garden next to the hotel. The gardens are beautiful & well kept. The hotel was visited by a folk group which was very enjoyable. Hotel staff helpful & friendly. Food rather bland.
Booked through an Italian travel specialist as a treat - first holiday without grown up children. The hotel was in a great setting - pool and sun terrace was beautiful but that is where it stops. The room was shabby and dated - bathroom cramped to say the least! We are average sized people and shower cubicle was so small you banged you elbows when washing. Breakfast was set in God's waiting room - at 49 and 51 we lowered the average age significantly! Waiters were dressed in white tuxedos reminded me of Manuel in Fawlty Towers. Hotel very convenient to explore Taormina - great restaurants and bars to explore and such a lively setting - which was good ad we couldn't have eaten at the hotel even though it was included - the standard of breakfast set our expectations and the thought of being stuck in the dreary basement restaurant when there was a vibrant town to explore was too much!!
Beautiful hotel with the most wonderful view. Staff at the front desk couldn't be nicer. Everybody is so kind and helpful! Nice rooms and beautiful gardens + swimming pool. My stay at Excelsior Palace can be described as perfect.
Excellent location, beautiful views from the gardens and pool. Yet it’s not quite great. Our standard room overlooked a rubbish tip (unhelpfully, the hotel said it wasn’t their rubbish). We upgraded (not cheap) to a fabulous room with a double balcony and sea and Etna views. The food was very average - we had half board for four nights but after the first night ate out (huge choice just minutes from the hotel). The hotel bar hugely expensive. Reception varied from very pleasant and incredibly helpful to distant and uninterested. If you book a sea view with balcony and can get bed and breakfast this would be a great choice, The pool views in particular are stunning and the location really good.
Pluses: beautiful sitting rooms and bar, gardens and pool, stunning views of Etna and Ionian Sea, capable front desk, good breakfast buffet and wait staff, excellent location just outside city wall at beginning of Corso Umberto, well designed and good-sized bathroom with excellent water pressure, good sized room with balcony, comfortable bed. Negatives: room furnishings are unispiring (in contrast to beautiful furnishings in common area off of reception), weak housekeeping, dinner -- blah food, very good service, and elevator placement. (Hotel is long and narrow with one elevator that is not at the center-- so a long hike with a few stairs if your room is north of the elevator. We used staircase for the one flight.
