This hotel is the only 5 star hotel on the island. Located just across the border between Dutch and French St. Maarten / St. Martin it borders the Les Terres Basses gated community with huge residential villas and exclusive real estate. Baie Longue and Plum Bay are just minutes away and La Samanna actually has private entrance to Baie Longue. This very exclusive Hotel is an absolute must see if You are in the area.
Staff, rooms, view, beach and people absolutely top notch! However, you will want to AVOID the restaurant on property. Go into town. While the view is simply stunning, the food is NOT very good at all and the wine list is too expensive for even a king. They lack a trained chef that can actually cook a decent recipe. And the waiting staff want to negotiate the cost of a bottle of wine like buying a car ($495 to $8,500??? NO THANK YOU!). They need a reasonably priced wine list from $40 to $100.
Words can't express how my wife and I feel about La Samana and all it's employees!!! I want to preface this review with the fact that we only learned about this hotel right before we arrived on the island, and although we had planned on doing lunch, we were not residents of the resort. I will spare specifics but my family had a tremendous scare with our son when visiting, one that was not at all related to the resort, but thanks to the support of their wonderful team, our two year old son is completely healthy!!!! How do you thank a group of people you never met, that stayed with us untill help arrived, drove my wife and son to hospital while my other son and I were in an ambulance, picked me back up to go get my car, escorted me back to the hospital so I wouldnt get lost, called to make sure my son would be ok and all without getting anything in return. My family is at a lost for words in the gratitude we feel towards the team at La Samana.....especially their security manager!!!!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!!! We will never forget that day as we dont know what we would have done had that happened anywhere else. We believe fate had us on that beautiful beach with beautiful caring people to help our family that day and are forever grateful!!
La Samanna was a delight. The newly refurbished room was over the top. It had a balcony with a walk up winding staircase to a rooftop where there were lounge chairs and beautiful views of the sunset. The restaurant was excellent as was the staff overall. It is on a beautiful beach and the infinity pool was very nice. Only thing is they do not have a real spa if that is a must. They had treatment rooms but no wet areas...
This stay was either our 11th or 12th. Can't remember!. We truly love LaSamanna. Yes it is expensive, yes the drinks are outrageous and the food is too expensive. On the other hand, from the time we step into the main lobby to register and see the beautiful view of the Caribbean, and the friendly faces that have been there year after year we are reminded of why we come back year after year. We were treated to an upgrade to a suite and found a nice fruit plate and chilled Champaign upon our arrival. However, we missed our check-in rum punch. We find the staff to be very accommodating and very friendly. The wine tasting was exceptional as was the Sommelier. Romel and Jean-Wel (may not have spelled that correctly) at the beach bar are wonderful as are the ladies at breakfast and the concierge. We took advantage of the spa and the massage was wonderful. We do get a rental car for the day time so we can visit Phillipsburg, Marigot, Grand Case and Orient Beach, but no longer drive at night after being stopped at the traffic circle in Marigot by the Gendarmes and held at gunpoint while we were asked over and over if we had been drinking. It was truly frightening. The cost of a taxi in to Marigot is $60 round trip. Our only complaint is that when there is a private party at the beach bar guests are not able to have a drink there and watch the sunset. That is very disappointing. If one is wanting a high-end American style hotel this is not the place to come. If one is looking for a beautiful view and a quiet and restful vacation then LaSamanna is a great choice in our opinion.
I stayed in room G15 with my wife and we loved it. We had a great time hanging out in our room or soaking up the sun at the beautiful beach area. The hotel wasn't crowded either so everything felt private and intimate. The hotel also has everything you could possibly want; restaurants, spa, bar and shopping. We will definitely be coming back!
We just returned from our stay at La Samanna and would caution potential visitors that this is not a five star property; service is average and the hotel is not exclusive to registered guests nor would I consider the amenities luxurious. It does not compare favorably to other five star rated hotels in the Caribbean. This was not solely our conclusion but a consensus of several island residents as well as fellow guests. I would rate as a solid four star; the issue is the pricing is in line with a five star property. Not a good value. We enjoyed our vacation but would not return unless pricing was commensurate with a four star property. In addition, anyone planning a stay during quiet season should be warned that the hotel allows non-registered guests to use the hotel amenities if they are on site for lunch. This includes the pool area, one of which has very limited space. The infinity pool was overrun several times during the week with outside people. Very disruptive and disappointing. This was not disclosed when we booked. Another incident was at the beach. We waited 40 minutes for towels because the staff was too busy accommodating 20 or so non-registered guests. This was confirmed to us by multiple guests who had confirmed with the group that they were indeed not staying at the hotel. Unacceptable. Look elsewhere. Most suggested Le Petit as the better place for the price. Also note that the water is very rocky, with an undertow it can be difficult to navigate getting in and out of the water. The beach by the cabanas and water sport hut is clear and calm.
We spent the day at the resort. We had a colorful and tasty lunch by the pool and we enjoyed the beach all the afternoon. The water is so blue and calm, the staff absolutely efficient and friendly. We will be back for sure. What a peaceful place!
La Samanna is the best resort in St Martin if you are looking for relaxation with everything at your fingerttips, spa, restaurants, bar, private beach, yoga, you name it. I have been to St Martin and St Barths numerous times in the last 10 years. When I was younger I used to frequent the Dutch side of the island because it was lively and fun. I fondly remember many local places, most have now closed down or revamped. Now that I am older I prefer a more refined and private place. La Samanna is that place to regain your peace of mind. Set on a pristine beach it is an oasis like no other for a Manhattanite like me. I spent a long four day weekend in a suite called the plunge pool suite. It had a huge private roof with a hot tub , pool chairs and amazing sunset views. The suite itself was large, a living room, bedroom , patio and kitchen. The bedroom faced a garden while the living room with its patio faced the turquoise Caribbean sea. Secluded beach, I never saw anyone in the water, not even once, while I was on the patio or upstairs on the rooftop. I was right near the spa so I went there every day! Loved the outdoor shower! I found an amazing masseuse called Dorothy. I recommend you make an appointment with her prior to checking in. I had a Swedish massage the day I got in, Another day I got a seaweed body wrap and great foot/leg massage. She is a truly top notch masseuse, believe me I am a spa connoisseur and trained in massage therapy myself, I know the difference. About dining, I went to Trellis ( a fine French restaurant) for dinner or Baie bar which had nice tapas. The menu/food in Trellis equals any high end French restaurant in NYC. My favorite though was Beach bar, the lunch place. Great setting, on the beach, live music, upbeat vibe and the food was yummy. I was asked by some hotel staff if I felt they were a true five star hotel or a wanna be. My answer was YES this is a true five star hotel. In terms of service and cuisine, maybe slightly better than even Peter Island where I spent a week last September. Have to say, La Samanna did wonders for my weary body and soul. Can't wait to go back and spend at least a week.
What a wonderful experience at La Samanna. The staff were friendly and overall service was phenomenal. Room was always clean and well managed by the staff. What we enjoyed most was the private hotel beach in conjunction with the infinity pool. We might be visiting during off season. The beach was quiet and has a breath taking sunset view. You absolutely don't have to fight with the outside crowd. It's perfect for our honeymoon. The food and booze are pricy since we are in a resort (as expected). We had dinner at Trellis and it's not bad. You can get much better French food outside the compound. Expect to pay $25USD for cab each way if you plan to eat outside. We spent one day outside hotel and got case of wine and beer @local stores. That took care of our beverage needs :)! One other call out, the hotel is well gated and have security staff 24/7. We feel safe when you actually go in-land and compare. Certainly a peace of mind during our stay Thanks again. It's our first time visiting St Maarten and we were to choose La Samanna as our luxury getaway hotel. Xoxo
