Thilanka Hotel

We had to change hotels in Kandy for our last night and our guesthouse arranged everything for our stay at Thilanka. It is a very comfortable hotel, bit since it has many rooms you don't have the charm of a human size guesthouse. The room (711) was big, with a balcony. Service is good too. Be careful the walls are thin (we could hear our next door neighboors!

We stayed here with family (8persons) for three nights. Breakfast is nice, a lot of waiters at your service, and the reception is friendly. Beautifully lit up with Christmas lights at night, and our ten year old enjoyed the pool. Nice view from the balcony ,clean and big rooms. A great place to stay!

27 of us, all foreigners, stayed here for 3 nights during the first week of December. The hotel is situated on top of a hill which means that you need transportation to get there. It is not suited for persons with disabilities and the elderly. The rooms are pretty good with the basic amenities. Note, however, that there is no CNN on tv. The food was good, especially the breakfast, which had both western and Sri Lankan food items. The service was also good and we have no reservations about it. Apart from the difficulty of reaching the hotel especially on foot, the hotel itself is very good and deserves a 4-star rating.

We stayed at this hotel over the new year period. It is clear that this hotel is well established with excellent staff and great food. They have an excellent buffet for dinner with both local and western food alike. Their chefs really lay it on and the quality is really high. The pool and bar area is magnificent with a view over kandy lake and the surrounding hills. My only criticism is that for Sri Lanka it seems overpriced. I admit we were staying over peak, but more than £200 a night for a triple room is steep. It's clear that the management seek profit on this rate, with the small things that become apparent - lumpy pillows, noisy aircon, single ply TP and some tired furnishings. For Sri Lankan standards it's fair - but they are seeking first world rates and are not quite up to scratch in comparison. A little TLC is required.

I would come again and recommend this hotel because of the high quality of service and food. Buffet for breakfast and dinner. The rooms and Restaurant are nicely furnished and extremely clean. Good location - the Palace is within walkin distance.

Short version: Lied and said there was a water issue (aka they overbooked), moved us to a dramatically worse hotel for the same rate. Hotel Thilanka are scammers. We arrived from Dambulla where we'd been scammed by Thilanka Resort & Spa in the same exact way, where we were told that due to a water issue in the hotel there were no rooms available. They then stated that we were going to stay at the same hotel, just up the hill, and would get a free dinner for compensation. The "same hotel" ended up being Lee's Holiday Inn, a 2 star (at best) hotel with huge mildew stains, dirty towels, dirty walls, stained sheets, and no hot water. Again, I'd like to state this is the exact same thing that happened with Thilanka in Dambulla 24 hours previously. Before we gave up on the atrocious hotel room and went to an AirBnB, we decided to stay by the pool at Thilanka since we were still officially checked in. While we were there, a worker shattered a wine bottle directly poolside, whose glass clearly had fallen in the pool. Rather than drain the pool or close it for more than 5 minutes, they had another worker undress and feel around with his bare hands on the bottom, while a senior worker pointed at the glass. Not a minute after the pool opened, 5 young children were swimming in this pool. I'm sure the management is going to respond saying they really did have a water issue (should be noted that the hotel was completely packed, so that's one heck of an isolated water issue), and it was some crazy bad luck that this happened to us twice in three days. Fortunately, gave us a refund for the entire amount within 5 minutes of calling, so at least someone has excellent customer service. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt on this bit of insanity, 1). they lied by saying it was the same hotel, and 2). the hotel they booked for us while keeping our 4 star hotel money was the worst I'd ever seen after me/my partner's combined 15 years of business travel. You very well might not get scammed by Thilanka in Dambulla or Kandy, but rest assured that they are scammers and liars. Avoid at all costs.

The rooms are big and spacious with a spacious balcony to enjoy the view of the lake and Kandy city. The staff are attentive and cordial and eager to please. Restaurant and bar have good and prompt service. The only complaint I have is that since there was a dinner buffet laid out the restaurant staff was not too eager to serve the ala carte meal and insisted on us having the buffet.

Nice hotel with nice service. What I liked most about this hotel was view from our balcony but at the same time you have to be little careful from monkeys. Food and service both were good with live music during dinner. Will recommend to others.

The furniture was a little old and the hotel seemed to be work in progress but the hotel staff was incredibly friendly, kind and professional and the New Year’s Eve buffet was very good. The following morning the hotel was clean and ready despite the night’s celebrations. We were very pleased about the availability of accomodation for our driver.

We took a family room, this was a cheap option as we were literally there to eat and sleep! The room was clean, comfortable and functional. The bathroom was enormous and lovely! We had water in our room, Internet and a balcony. There was a double bed, single bed and a bed sofa. The staff were attentive and lovely. The hotel is on first impressions a little dated in the foyer, however, when you go up to the restaurant, pool area, cocktail bar and rooms by the pool, you can see that there is a luxury aspect to this hotel! The view was lovely but sadly we didn’t have the time to use the pool or bar! The breakfast was reasonable and the buffet meal was excellent!
