Best of times, Worst of times... Dickensian. No blame to the proprietors, we simply did not appreciate when we booked that the seafront boardwalk and associated activities extended this far down the beachfront. This property was a "proper" quaint british seaside hotel a few decades ago. It is now part of the "wild and crazy" strip with loud cars and young people having a very good time. To be fair, we arrived on foot after a 1 mile hike with luggage from the train station after a week of rugged travel on a Saturday evening as the party was at full-roar up and down the street (and inside the hotel pub). We were very relieved that our room was not in the hotel proper but up a side street in one of (many?) renovated row-houses with several en-suite rooms in them... The proprietor and staff were very friendly, helpful and professional but if we were more judgmental might have read the whole scene as unsafe and/or weirder than it really was. We did not partake of the included breakfast until the last day but when we did, it was every bit as civilized as you could ask for and definitely matched the "english country inn charm" we expected. I would definitely not recommend this stay to anyone during the high season, especially on the weekends if they are not looking for a loud and raucous time, but that goes for the whole boardwalk which extends another block or two up the coast. If we were to return to Southend, we would stay here again but only off season.
