I stayed at Candlewood for two nights at the beginning of the month. The room was clean and spacious. Only down side was the guest across the hall kept slamming the door and it appeared there was not much of a sound barrier. When I went to check out the attendant asked if I stayed two nights which I agreed. I paid the bill only to notice when I got to my vehicle that I was charged three nights. The manager was prompt in changing my bill to the correct total.
I stayed at this hotel for a last minute trip to South Bend. The hotel is a long walk from the main airport along a major road through town. With a few eateries within walking distance, you will need a car. The room was large, clean, and consistent with other extended stay hotels. The staff was courteous and asked about basic things most front desks do not, such as wake-up calls and ground transportation. Although the price was a little high, I would stay here again under the right conditions.
Stayed for 1 night and was pleased in all respects. The hotel is in good repair with current furnishings. Everywhere I went it was clean. The room was spacious with 2 king sized beds (room 315). Microwave, full size fridge wit freezer, dishwashing machine, business desk, roomy bathroom, and 42 inch flat screen tv. Wifi and cable.
This is a tired hotel and certainly not up to Candlewood's normal standards. Quite disappointed. Room smells and it is my second one. Carpets worn and the place just needs renovations to be done. I'll stick out but won't be returning here again.
Candlewood suites are not the luxury brand of IHG but they are possibly the best value. At ~&100/night for a big room with full size refrigerator, microwave, and dishes it's a great value if you have to stay any period of time for work. If you are on a budget with the family it's perfect. If you want a luxury stay probably not. This hotel was clean, quiet, and the staff was friendly. Worked for me.
Stayed 10/14-10/15 for a Notre Dame Football game. And like all hotels in the area the price tripled for game weekends. I won't rate it based on the $300 a night rate because it would fall far short. I view all hotel stays as a "bed to crash in" so I'm not too particular. The room was typical. I will note that staying on the 3rd floor the water pressure in the bathroom was low. They have a "cup board" system for snacks and such with a honor system to pay. I passed, prices were not well marked and nothing I needed. I will note that Volcano's is a small Italian place located within in walking distance of the hotel. Good for lunch/dinner, dining room seating only. And a liquor/beer store across the street. Otherwise you need transportation to get anywhere else. This hotel has a small workout room (did not use) and front desk staff was helpful.
I rated this property as average because for a 2 1/2-star property it really is not that much better than a 2 star. I have stayed in 2 other Candlewood suites in the last two months and both were superior to the one in South Bend. The layout seemed the same but the size of the room was smaller in the South Bend property. The bathroom of room 210 looked like an amateur had remodeled it. I take that back, I just remodeled my bathroom and I am an amateur, and my bathroom looks better. It just doesn't live up to what I believe a IHG property should be. They, as other Candlewood Suites, do not serve a breakfast here and that also makes me have a dim view of this property. I stayed here using a promo that allowed me to redeem only 5000 points and if I had to stay here again, that is the only way I would. The $105 price for a room is an overcharge, for sure. If I had to pay that, I would look for another place to stay. Sorry Candlewood Suites of South Bend.
Not the nicest hotel but it probably would have been acceptable if it weren't for the horrible smoke smell. This property is supposed to be smoke free but the room smelled terrible. I am assuming one of the rooms next to us had a smoker because the smoke smell would come and go. Decent for the price, the 3rd floor hallway looked newly painted, cigarette butts all over by the front door of the hotel, air conditioner in the lobby not working. Overall not terrible for the price unless you have a family member affected by smoke, if you do I recommend staying away.
I booked through my business's travel agency, who has a contract with the chain. I arrived late at night and was initially given a room that smelled like cigarette smoke. The front desk assured me that all rooms are non-smoking but did move me to a room that was labeled "no smoking". That room smelled better, but still had a definite smoke odor. I wasn't able to connect to wifi and ended up using my company phone's hotspot. Aside from the odor, my room wasn't bad. The decor was reasonably up to date, the carpet was clean, and the bed comfortable. Water pressure in the bathroom was on the light side. Noise level is fine; you can hear folks in the hallway but you can't hear vehicles on the road. Service overall is okay - front desk staff is understanding and did their best to address my concerns.
This one was quite an experience. We were in the area from Chicago for a wedding in Laporte the next night. We ran into some unfortunate situations that this website is not the place to express those. We have talked to Management and they are dealing with the issues. Other than those issues we had the rest of the stay was no problems.
