Myself and my 14 year old daughter booked this hotel last minute through Sunway, for a steal. Rooms - we stayed in room 312, and it was very small and the decor isn't anything to rave about. But we had no complaints about the cleanliness as it was serviced every day, with clean sheets and towels. The shower was small but powerful. We had a good sized balcony, though we had no sea view, it was very quiet and private. Beds were comfortable and the air con was very welcome. We slept well every night, so you can't ask for more than that. It's wasn't a room for hanging around in, just a comfy place to come back to after a long day in the sun. Food - I decided to pay a little extra for the Half Board option (5 euro per person per day). Breakfast was pretty basic but it had everything you would need to set you up for the day. And the coffee was excellent! Dinner was hit and miss, but the good thing was that we could see at breakfast what was on the menu for dinner, so if there wasn't anything that tickled our fancy, we could decide to go out that night instead. (If you don't fancy going far, there's a place next door, Verdemare, and I would highly recommend it. Reasonably priced and real authentic Italian food.) The food is basic, but we enjoyed it. You have to be prepared for the fact that this isn't catering for Irish/British tastes. The waiting staff in the restaurant were just lovely, and we loved how they became more familiar as the week went on. Tab - the hotel is cashless, and for me, this was great. It's easy enough to keep a record of what we spent day to day, and I thought that the prices were reasonable (for lunch we had a pizza shared, they're huge, for 5 euro) I paid twice, once mid week, and then at the end. It also meant that there was no pressure to tip, or to carry cash to the pool etc. Pool - We went to the pool every day straight after breakfast. There were always plenty of beds. The sun hits the pool from around 9am to 3.30pm, then it is in shade. The pool isn't huge, but it was perfect for dipping in and out. And it's always clean. The beds were comfortable. Location - the junction! I'm sure this will come up in every review! The hotel is located on a busy stretch of the road. Yes it is intimidating at first, but we soon got used to the noise, and it was actually quite entertaining to watch the cars maneuver their way around. Sorrento is beautiful, and the walk from the hotel was breathtaking. Yes, you must brave the road, as there is no footpath for about 300m, but it is so worth it. And you soon get used to this walk, the vehicles look out for you. If you walk down to the centre of town it takes about 15 minutes ( or half an hour if you're me, stopping to take photos!) Walking back up is all uphill, and can be tough going in the heat, but the views just make it so much more fun. We got the bus back up a couple of times, but mainly strolled back. WI-FI - hit and miss At the end of the day, this is a 3 star hotel. And a very good one! I felt like it ticked all the boxes, clean, comfortable, welcoming, warm and safe. If you want to experience a real old school Italian family run hotel, then this is a pretty good place to go. And Sorrento and surrounding areas are just so stunning, it is a wonderful base to explore. Hope this review was helpful. Would we go back? Yes, as long as the price was reasonable. TIP - try and get a room on the first or second floor, preferably at the front
I stayed here with my partner for 10 days. The location is good as you can walk into Sorrento in 15 minutes. The rooms are large, clean and modern with great views of Vesuvius. We booked through Thompson and the rep was available most days, gave us a tour of the town and helped us book several excursions. We paid for half board and the evening meals were very good. The breakfast could have been better. Most of the staff were extremely warm, friendly and helpful. Any problems we had were dealt with immediately by the lovely manager Alfonso. We loved this holiday and I would recommend this hotel to families or couples.
We have just returned from a week at Hotel Metropole and I have only good things to say about our visit! The hotel its self was spotless, our room was cleaned daily and I struggled to find any dirt at all! Breakfast was a lovely continental selection, enough to get your day started! The staff were more than amazing, efficient and very friendly, especially with our little toddler! The pool area was fantastic to lie and relax, and our daughter loved swimming and playing all day. Before our trip I read a few comments regarding the busy junction and road outside, but we walked to and from Sorrento daily with a pram and had no issues at all, you've just got to go for it the Italian way! If I was to give any parents with young children a bit of advice just be prepared to carry the pram up and down a couple of steps within the Hotel grounds (we didn't mind the exercise though!). Thank you for a fantastic stay! We would definitely recommend this Hotel to anyone wanting to stay outside the busy centre of Sorrento.
Stayed for 7 nights in room 301 and had a fantastic time. Room was spotlessly clean, breakfast was a self service buffet with good choices and dinner was lovely too. Air conditioning wasn't working in our room but the friendly staff sorted us out with a great fan which did the trick and in 30-38 deg of heat and 80% humidity it was badly needed, particularly after the 15 walk to the town each day. The walk in itself was fine just the initial 5 minutes are without pavement but don't let this put you off as the drivers do give you a wide berth! Interesting junction outside the hotel kept us amused all week! Pool small but they all seem to be of similar size in sorrento, excellent staff, all v friendly.
First off - I cant understand why anyone would give negative comments about this hotel ... we thought is was a fantastic traditional hotel and superb location. We where in room 106 at the rear of the hotel, which was very quiet (great nights sleep). The food was excellent, especially breakfast. It was so refreshing NOT to have a fried breakfast every day. Plenty of cereal choice, breads, cheese, meat, toast, croissants, jams, spreads, unlimited coffee, tea, juice, etc., Choose your evening meal at breakfast; great choices.. Pool area and terraces are very clean and beautifully maintained. NO NEED to reserve your sunbed with towels (very relaxed atmosphere) ... plenty of sitting/lounging options/areas. As with other comments about the no pavement issues outside the hotel, we found the first few days a bit hair-raising, but you soon get used to it. We timed the walk to the outskirts of Sorrento to approx 20 mins down and 25 mins up. (you honestly don't notice it because of the fantastic views).
Lovely old world,y Hotel Spotless. Nice food Waiters Very efficient, Served food and cleared away empty plates ,very good service and always dressed nicely,Gala night was amazing,Pool area and Bar area run well and kept clean,
Like everyone else we read the previous reviews which raised some negative points about this hotel BUT we only had a positive experience of this hotel. Our room (104) was great with a large balcony at the rear of the Hotel which was quiet, spotlessly clean with a large shower and a good size room. A fridge with minibar, safe and good air conditioning made for a comfortable stay. Free wifi was excellent. The Pool area was good and we could always get loungers no matter what time of day. Plenty of shade is available when you want a break from the sun. Now to the food. Breakfast was good with a nice variety to choose from. I've stayed at other hotels with more choices at breakfast but they were 4/5 star hotels and were priced accordingly. We had booked half board so were able to choose from 3 starters and 3 main courses and enjoyed every single one. The nice House White was made locally in Ischia and at 10 euros was excellent value . The "snack bar " is open at lunchtime and has a good variety of meals on the menu which were all of a very high standard. The pizza (5 euros) and bruschetta were excellent. A gala dinner was provided on the Thursday which was a set meal dinner with entertainment and a real highlight of the week. Our transport back to the airport was an early one which meant we had to leave before the restaurant was open for breakfast but this hotel is happy to provide a packed breakfast at no extra cost for the journey.. I think some of the negative reviewers forgot that this was a 3 star hotel, was priced accordingly BUT provided service and food above this rating. We will certainly visit this hotel again
I believe some of the reviews for this hotel to be a little harsh based on our experience of staying at the Metropole for 10 days in late July. The rooms were exceptionally clean and were turned over with clean towels and pillow cases every day. The cleaning staff do a fantastic job and I couldn't fault the cleanliness of the hotel at all. The room we were in was modern and the bathroom had a really large powerful shower. We bought ourselves a small travel sized kettle, as the rooms do not have one, we then stored our milk in the mini fridge and were able to have tea and coffee morning and night. If we hadn't had done this, we would have really spent a fortune at the bar buying coffees and hot drinks. I can't understand the harsh comments about the food at all. Every meal was absolutely delicious. There were four choices every day (apart from four course gala dinner set menu on a Thursday.) The pasta was delicious and I had the best lasagne I've ever had one night. We never had a bad meal - but don't expect any burgers, chips or chicken nuggets. The menu is very Mediterranean so you won't be getting any English classics! Breakfast was good, a decent range of options available, although no variation at all day to day so it did get a little boring on days 9 + 10! The waiting staff are real characters and it really is very 'Faulty Towers' in places. I was half expecting Manwell to come bursting out of the kitchen swing doors. They were very attentive but could be a little grumpy sometimes. We were left wondering whether we had personally upset one waiter as he seemed to be particularly grumpy with us. This didn't ruin anything though, it just gave the hotel more of an authentic feel! The pool area is great and the pool again was scrupulously clean. There are showers for use and plenty of sunbeds although they are all occupied by about midday and free up a bit by late afternoon (this was during peak times, probably not the case outside of the summer hols). Sorrento is about 20 minute walk from the hotel. No path for the first 200 metres but that's not a major issue. The biggest problem is the heat and that if you want to get any water that doesn't come in expensive green bottles from hotel bar, then you need to lug the water up a hill in the heat for 10 minutes from the shop without a path! We did find this very oppressive during the day and it did stop us going into town as much as we would if we hadn't had to endure the long climb back up to the hotel. If you're heading back up to the hotel at night, putting the torch on on your phone and shining it behind you to catch the attention of the drivers means they tend to give you a little more room. I have rated this hotel based solely on the elements that they can control (not the busy traffic or junction it is situated on) but I will quickly mention a few things that don't come across when booking. In some ways the photos advertising the hotel are a little missleading. What you cannot see in these pictures is the 5 lanes of busy junction that the hotel sits directly on. The pool and bar area is also directly next to the said junction and, therefore, the road noise is constant. Having said that, you do get used to it. When we first checked into the hotel we were given a 'sea view room' at the front of the hotel and we had the most disrupted night's sleep due to the road noise. The coaches, cars and mopeds beep every time they hit the junction and so this beeping woke us up so many times in the night. We requested a move to the back of the hotel in a garden room (which we had actually booked) and this was so lovely and quiet overlooking a little brook. We much preferred it - if you don't like road noise I wouldn't recommend the sea view rooms at all. Nice view but so loud! Overall we had a fantastic stay, even getting engaged during our visit. It was a relaxing, romantic and very enjoyable stay. Don't let the reviews put you off. It's a lovely hotel.
My husband and I stayed here a couple of weeks ago for our first kids free holiday in 23 years. I had read the reviews, and I also had a friend who has stayed here twice. Like most I was a little daunted about the road and the walk into town, but there is nothing to worry about. It is a 10 minute walk down and I am a plumpish lady who does little to none in the exercise line, and I walked the hill each night, up and down, with no problem at all in about 15 minutes. Our room was room 309. it was very clean, good air conditioning and an amazing view over Mount Vesuvius. We found the staff very friendly and helpful especially when we wanted to book our trips. Shop around for the trips as they do vary in price a lot. I will upload the brochure we booked from, which we found in the reception, as this was a lot cheaper than most, and very good trips. Breakfast was a simple scrambled or boiled eggs with little hot dog sausages, and also plenty of fruit, cereals and breads to choose from. The evening meals were also very good. Always a meat, fish or veggie option to choose from, and the ice cream is to die for!!! There is a free beach which belongs to a hotel across the road which is usable to the Metropole guests. Just ask for a ticket at the front desk before you go. Be warned they will pounce on you to hire a sunbed when you get there (which we did and cost us 21 euros!) you can sit on your towels there, and not rent the beds. Overall we had a fabulous holiday, very relaxing, ideal location for people who don't like to be right in the town and we will be returning here again one day.
We stayed here on a half board basis, as a family of 3. The room would have benefited from a small fridge and had the 3rd bed added into a double room making it a wee bit cramped. However the room was always clean, had a view across the Bay of Naples and was otherwise comfortable. The meals were perfectly acceptable- with a choice from 3 options for the evening meal. Breakfast was a simple continental style buffet, which we enjoyed each day. The hotel is about 20-25 minute walk from the centre of Sorrento- it is a pleasant walk down and you can get a cheap bus back. We found using public transport easy and cheap. The bus that stops almost outside the hotel goes through town and to the ferry port, where you can get transport to a number of places. Tickets are a fraction of the cost of tour operators! The pool area is clean and pleasant, as is the bar. The staff are pleasant and helpful- despite some reviews indicating otherwise. We'd go back! Pic shows view from our room. Vesuvius in the background.
