This is a Brit expression indicating that there are some good things and some not so good things. I'll try to identify them succinctly from my point of view and leave readers to make their own decision. Per esempio the location is terrific assuming you don't want to spend a king's ransom on a hotel with views of the sunset. It's right in the centre of the old town, surrounded by decent (and a few really good) restaurants, close to the main piazza and an easy walk from the Marina Grande. On the other hand the rooms, or the one we had at any rate are very small as are the bathrooms. The hotel is decorated in very cheerful majolica tiles but this includes the corridor floors and departures late evening or very early morning of which there were several are way too noisy. Breakfast is included in the rate but quite honestly it is pretty average. Plenty to eat if you get there early but leave it much longer and not only there are shortages but the scrambled egg is pretty solid. Also, and sadly, they seem to offer the most cake like cornetti (croissants) I've ever begun to eat.......I do love my Italian cornetti! There seems to be supper available but it also seems to be only for the groups (of people even older than we are) who seem to make up a large proportion of the Astoria's customers. As I said "you pays your money and you takes your choice" which is another Brit expression meaning pretty much the same as the first. I wouldn't stay there again but then I probably won't go to Sorrento again.

The best thing about the hotel is the great location in the charming old part of town on a quiet street. We also enjoyed sitting on our balcony over the courtyard. The room itself doesn't leave room to open a suitcase, except on the bed, but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was well appointed. The least enjoyable part of the stay was the breakfast in a stark, windowless room, with not great quality or selection.

We were very pleased with this hotel. Accomodations were very good ... nice hotel room, hearty breakfast, and a very helpful staff ... best of all this hotel was right in the heart of the city ... easy walking to everything ... for sure I would go back to this hotel ... Thank you staff ... you did a GREAT job !

An excellent, well positioned and quiet hotel in the centre of Sorrento. Rooms are small but comfortable the staff are helpful and obliging. About a half mile walk from the station. Recommended and good value for money....

In the middle of the old town, very charming hotel. The rooms very nice but not modern if that is important to you. The best part is the location, with tons of great restaurants just around the corner. Public parking in a garage 400m away was no problem for us. Breakfast is average, but the staff is friendly, and the rooms are clean.

Just returned from this gem of a hotel. The best features are location ,cleanliness but most of all the friendliness and kindness of the staff. I would highly recommend this hotel do not stay anywhere else Sorrento. Many thanks and ciao Luigi and Valentino and of course the lovely Rachele on reception hope I have all names spelt correctly grazie John and Carmel room 402

The hotel is centrally located and very clean. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Light sleepers should bring earplugs but most people will not have problems with noise. I traveled with a group and did not pick any of the hotels but I would absolutely consider staying here again.

Our air conditoned room was very clean and towels changed every day. The staff could not do enough for us, and Receptionist Rachele was most helpful during our stay. Fabulous breakfast with scambled eggs, bacon and melon. We could get a drink from the bar at any time and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel's location in the centre of the town is perfect for sightseeing, about 5 mins walk from the bus and train station and a couple of minutes away from the lift down to the port to take fast ferries to the islands of Capri & Ishcia. Can't wait to go back!

We have just returned from another wonderful week at this hotel, our third in three years. The location is fantastic, the staff are all really nice, the room clean and comfortable and it is so close to all the main areas to see along with easy access to ferries and trains. Some of the comments from previous reviews are relevant, but overall this is a great place to stay and we would looking forward to return again!

Up an old street called Via Santa Maria delle Grazie, right in the heart of Sorrento, steps from Piazza S. Antonino, this Hotel is a gem in several ways. The decor was charming with its combination of brightly colored ceramic tile and its modernity. The staff couldn’t have been any more welcoming and helpful. The room we were in was predictably small and quiet but with all the amenities and lots of cupboard space for clothing. There were only the two of us and we weren’t in the room much anyway. What impressed us was the helpfulness of the staff at the front desk when we needed to confirm reservations for the various tours we took. The impeccable cleanliness of the place and its proximity to the waterfront and shopping area which was on the next street was a real plus. In the morning breakfast in the dining room had everything you could want. The Staff were friendly and conscientious making sure food was replenished even if you arrived a little late. A few hours after we checked out of the hotel we discovered we’d left some belongings behind and emailed the hotel to see if they’d found them. They had. A big thank you to Michele who arranged to have the items mailed to us in Canada. They arrived a week ago. From our experience Hotel Astoria not only has charm and beauty but also a high level of customer service and care. We highly recommend this hotel to our fellow travellers. Sincerely, Bramptonbeachbums.
