Independence Hotel Resort & Spa

We stayed at Independence Resort end of December/early January, stayed in Seaview pavilion, a short walk down the hill to the beautiful infinity pool, and a short stroll to the beach. There is a elevator down to beach level if you don't like walking uphill. The Resort has been there since the 60's and it has the charm of a period hotel. The rooms are clean and the service at the hotel is very good. The restaurants are good, breakfast good. The resort is 10 minutes out of Sihanoukville but easily accessible by free shuttle bus or taxi. The 5.30 shuttle gets very full so be at reception 15 minutes early. Taxi rides are very cheap if you miss the shuttle. The New Year's Eve gala dinner on the beach and jetty was great. We stayed 5 nights which was, for us, the right amount of time. We then spent a few nights on Koh Rong island and a further stint of 5 nights at Otres 2 beach. We found that breaking up the holiday with 3 locations was a good way to experience different areas.

The room, facilities and staff are good. The breakfast buffet less choices. They tell us breakfast start at 7am. When we arrived 7.30am, the breakfast not yet ready. Other than that, everything are good. Gym, sauna, swimming pool, spa, computer facilities, table tennis and etc, this facilities make us stay inside the resort more. The private beach is clean.

We just spent 2 nights at this hotel. Before coming here we really looked forward spending time at the resort. The pictures were just amazing! The reality was something quite different. I will begin with the positive aspects of our stay. We started out spending a few hours at the Ocean Pool. It is a huge lovely pool, but not even close to being as pristine as the pictures want you to believe. However its still a great pool and location. The view is also stunning. There is a fairly large and well equipped gym next to the spa, but many of the machines needs maintenance. However you have so many options of equipment that most will make due with what works. There is a large yoga room with mats and all the equipment you can need. Next to the gym you also have a very nice locker room, with jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, a large pluss. There are locals with membership at this gym, but it was never crowded. The gym instructor was a very nice and helpful man, wish I could remember his name. The independence beach where the hotel has a HUGE area is in a very beautiful location. Its clean and the water was just great. The sunbeds are very old, but they are ok. That was the end of the positive things to say about the resort. The rest I have to break down in separate elements: The room: We had a room in the Sea Pavilion. It was nothing like the images on the website. It was really run down and dirty. There was a lot of dust in several areas, and almost every corner is filthy or moldy. The bathroom was the worst part, see images. There was dirt on the walls, floor and in the tub, it’s just screaming for maintenance. The shower was not working, the hose was leak. We went to the reception with all our concerns, but only the broken hose was fixed by a very friendly serviceman. The tub was smeared with some oil or dirty hands in the process. This was never cleaned up during our stay. The room was freezingly cold, so we suspect the AC termometer to be broken. Had to turn it off and open the door to warm up the room. Our bedsheets had stains on them, looked like blood, and was not changed during our stay, even tho its not possible to miss it making the bed. The staff: From the first moment we arrived we noticed that very few of the staff were smiling, which surprises us in this wonderful country of people who always are forthcoming. It was a dull reception, hastily ended with very little information about the resort. The person who took us to our room, only showed us the right door, then said goodbye. We are used to being given at least a few points of information about the room, as where to find the deposit box and so on. We had some issues with our room, but after 15 minutes on the phone trying to reach the reception, we gave up and went up there. The waiters at both the ocean pool restaurant and sunset restaurant needs to be more forthcoming and attentive. We understand that there can be many orders and a lot of people sometimes, however a lot can be excused if you are smiling and welcoming when you finally notice that we have not been able to order yet. Also be prepared to wait for your ordered items. There was one exception at sunset beach, again I wish I had the name of the nice waiter who finally helped us. The service at the breaksfast is the same and our conclusion is that this hotel must be severely understaffed. There are too many guests for so few waiters. I hope for their sake that this improves. The food: First; its overpriced and comes in very small portions. We are not heavy eaters, and normally not even able to finish most plates. We had a Italian chicken salad at the Ocean Pool. It was amazingly small, and I could not identify several of the ingredients. We are from Europe and know Italian food pretty well, there was nothing Italian about this salad. I forgot to mention it tasted like salty seaweed. We had a dinner at the sunset restaurant. We ordered a wok-fried chicken cashewnut, and a wok-fried barbeque porkrib( SEE image ). The chicken cashew was very tasty, but after a few bites I started to wonder about the texture of the meat. We both had a taste and the closest we could guess was pork meat. I can not be 100% sure what it was, but it was tasteful! The wok-fried pork rib on the other hand was not wok-fried, just a standard barbeque rib, served with only rice. At 8$ this is a rip-off. The breakfast: They got all the basics in order, if you can get hold of a waiter to give you a table that is. Make sure you order your coffee at once when given a table. The bread is very stale, but ok after you toast it. We ordered a total of 4 omelettes, with peppers and tomato only, they all came with ham, onion and cheese. There are also so many people and they are not able to keep up with the food running out. The grounds: The potential of this resort is just so great, however it looked like some areas had not been touched since 1963 when they opened. The buildings, the outdoor areas, the room, balcony, stairs, walkways, garden, the gym. It all shouts for maintenance. Ocean pool, the locker area of the gym and sunset restaurant are exceptions, very nice locations. Summary: For 200$ a night at a 4 star rating hotel you expect to get way more than you will ever get here today. If they do full maintenance of the hotel and hire more staff, they do have the potential of being great again. We however will not return! There are other great resorts close by, and thankfully we headed there after this stay. We thank the lovely instructor at the gym, the friendly waiter at sunset restaurant and the service man who fixed our broken hose. You made sure it was not a entirely a bad stay!

Pros: I felt so impressive when driving to this hotel. It was wonderful and our family really liked this coz of amazing swimming pool. We could see the sea while swimming in the pool. We stayed in this hotel two days and we mostly spent half a day at the pool. Cons: staff needed improving in hospitality from receptionists to waitress at coaral restaurant to serve breakfast. Buffet was included in our booking but I ordered a coffee in that restaurant I was charged. No one informed about this. Another disappointed when checking out, no one helped to take luggage to the car. We had to do everything by ourselves. Strongly recommend about facilities but not service.

The location is great and the beach very clean. The pool near the waterfront has an amazing view and is very large. The room size of the villa are very big and can accommodate a king size bed and an extra bed easily. But the bathroom is not well setup, there is not enough hanger to put your towels to dry. The rooms are clean but not on the corners, our friends got bitten in their beds ... Internet access is quite good, you can have it even on the beach. We experienced both restaurants : the coral and the sunset, the food is good but the service is very very long. At the sunset restaurant the service was even terrible : on 6 meals just one was the one we order, the waitress didn’t speak English very well and didn’t understand what we order. Furthermore we had to wait more than 30 minutes for the main course and after the same time for the dessert (which was ice cream). It is very sad because the location is beautiful but we expected a better quality of service. In a general way we were disappointed by the quality of service provided by the staff even though they were nice they were not trained enough to have high standard and as the price of the rooms are quite expensive we were expecting more service.

From no hot water, to constant room keys that didn’t work.....you’d be better off staying in a cheaper hotel...at least then you wouldn’t be disappointed. Breakfast was mediocre at best. Lukewarm coffee, stale breads and pastries, dirty tables and lack of service. Our room was beyond basic with a terrible shower, no hot water and linens that have seen better days. Our room keys never worked. Numerous times a day I begged them to fix the door. Staff just nodded and handed me a new room key. Internet works randomly. The windows to view the sea are dirty. It’s actually just a depressing place to stay.

If you like to spend over $200 for a beyond average room then you might be happy The room I was lead to believe by hotel pictures would be clean comfortable and 4.5 start quality It is not the case at all Old run down room we has the sea pavilion villa room, the room was not clean, dust and dirt in all corners of room and on benches, tv remote doesnt work Room smelled damp. Bathroom... See pictures of shower, how ridiculous How can they call this 4.5 star when there is 1. Only cold water and 2. The shower head faces the wall and shoots 2 metres away at the wall and water goes all through the bathroom!! No wonder this room smells damp! Walls are so thin u can hear eveything in room bedside you I am a travel agent and have stayed in hundreds of resorts, never one that has missed the mark this much on what it shows it offers I will never book my clients here it is much too expensive for the cost of the room The pool is lovely but there are plenty of other resorts around I did not complain to manager about the room , shower, dust, bugs as we are here for 1 night only If I had paid for multiple nights I would have absolutely moved rooms or if no better changed hotels and stayed at Sokha

Very big and great hotel with long history in Cambodia. Highlight is the very great swimming pool area at different levels and chill out areas. Best I have ever seen! Only issue is that there is not sufficient shade at the pool area, can be quite hot under the sun! Besides that very exeptional design!

Hotel on the beatiful beach no need to go to the islands to be in a parasitic place, 5 star staff, sympathetic, attentive, clean room, lovely infinity pool, lovely grounds ... what do you need mis to be in a paraiso ... breakfast in fron of the see

We really enjoyed our room, the grounds, the pools! Everything we could have wanted in cleanliness, nice staff, amenities. Unfortunately after two ordered meals (breakfast is great) we decided getting out at night and eating noodles and yogurt in our room was our best for lunch and dinner. Food was beyond salty and several guests were very rude. This place seems to be plagued by the takeover of the Independence beach by big businesses don’t be fooled by the prices that seem reasonable by western standards.
