Le Royal Meridien Shanghai5.0 out of 5.0

The Royal Meridien is situated on Nanjing Road, which is "downtown" Shanghai. The location is great, as there is no "one place" one should stay in Shanghai, but it's next to People's Park, and in walking distance from Xintiandi and the Bund. The hotel has a perfect level of service, the food is great, there's several restaurants, a wonderful lounge with views, and all in all a wonderful hotel. Nothing that makes it stand out - it's 5' as 5' should be, but there's also nothing to complain about. Everything is just smooth.
Getting to the lobby lounge is already inconvenient and with the renovation going on even more so check-in...ok, if you can check-in on the club floor. If you have to check in in the lobby and check-out there, normally long waiting because of the queues. The air-conditioning in the rooms do not work properly. You can not cool down the room in winter. The rooms have a "special" odor (not the Meridien smell), because they are old. The whole feeling is, that it seems to be dirty, at least not really clean Room 4806 is particularly bad: although the hotel has a no smoking policy, the room had a smoker's room smell in it. It was extremely hot in the room. Although, I told the people on my last stay (which was two days before this one), that I want to have a cool room, they did not manage to do that or were not willing to do it. I have stayed for 25 times in this hotel over the last years and mentioned this many times. Enough now. My recommendation: avoid this hotel. It is becoming run-down and so far, management does not seem to have any intention to do something against it. SPG member recognition: mediocre.
Friendly service, nice location which is just right on nanjing road pedestrian street . Stayed here for two time already. There are many restaurants around , we can find food from early morning to mid night.
I have stayed in Shanghai, Le Royal Meridien on a number of occasions over the last 14 months both on business and with my family, wife and two children aged 9 and 6 years old. I find that each time I go I become more dissapointed and feel now that the hotel is only trading on its prime location, with worsening customer service. My last trip was three nights with My family over the Chinese New Year Period. Check in was smooth and upon arrival in my room which I paid extra to get a rollaway bed for the children, it had not been catered for, despite the fact that during my check in the reception told me I was being charged extra. The room was only setup for two adults so no extra towels etc. After talking to housekeeping they delivered a childs cot, not a bed. I cannot understand how such basic things can go wrong... its all on the computer system, you manage to charge me extra for it alright. Breakfast just gets worse, the floor of the restaurant is dirty with the previous guests left overs, and despite the table being cleaned, no attention is given to the floor. I had to ask everyday for the floor to be cleaned, I am not being picky over a few crumbs, it was terrible. The tables are wiped over with a cloth and not cleaned properly, with old bits of food still on the table top. The service at breakfast is random, one day you are asked for tea or coffee, the next you have to ask and most of the time it comes only just warm. There was a boiler and coffee machine to take away a drink from the restaurant after breakfast, which is a great idea.... its no good however if the water is cold. Without being personal maybe the General Manager should just observe his staff working during breakfast time, after only three breakfasts I could tell you who doesnt pull their weight and its not the guys who work hard to clear the tables, they were great. I really feel this hotel is just living off the back of its location, get the service sorted out, it is a reflection on the management team. This hotel will not be my first choice on future visits to shanghai for either business or pleasure.
Super convenient location at Nanjing Road East, close to everything... for shopping, good restaurant, and public transport. The hotel is basically good, but a bit dated. It is very strange that there is not even 1 restaurant serving anything at tea time after lunch. And as a hotel at such a key location, the staff at the restaurants were not smart enough to provide good service. They were slow and not very responsive.
The hotel was under renovation, so it was a bit confusing at times and rooms are a bit dated. However, location is really very good and for a business trip you can't complain too much. The restaurants are also quite dated and would look forward to see the new look after the renovation
I would taking an opportunity to express Thankfulness on behalf of our family to the following Staffs of Le Royal Meridien Shanghai : Peter Shin rectified some errors with initiative accordingly after my enquiry. We stayed for business as it came recommended by our business contact there. I am giving my honest reviews, so other guests know what to expect. Pros: • Great location, close to great shopping and restaurants of all types. • Complimentary bottled water and selection of teas and paper cups in room is nice. • There’s a Starbucks right across the street. • Toiletries are nice. • Nice gym facility with good selection of workout equipment. • Room service is good and friendly. • Bellman helpful in calling cabs for you. • Staff is nice and helpful. • The hotel offers beautiful skyline views depending on which level and side of the hotel you’re placed in. Negatives: • On the booking engine it has a 5 Star Hotel rating, upon checking into our room I give it 3 Stars. • Main lobby upon entering building is super cold. You don’t get any heat, until you go up to the hotels upper lobby floor to check in. I don’t know how that poor girl works in the little cafe down there, it’s freezing. In addition, looks like there’s some construction on the outside of building. • Room is small and out dated (carpet stains, mirror was peeling off around edges on closet doors, sink area could use some re-caulking, shower is small and etc...) • Temp in room was super hot and would not cool down, no air flow. We tried to turn off thermostat hoping upon our return from dinner the room would return to cooler temp, it did not. • I had to request for another room, which the receptionist switched us over to a slightly better room (still small - layout of standard room is not efficient all around). • Sink area is small, shelves are narrow you can’t really place much on there without it falling off. • There’s no place to lay your luggage on the floor without tripping over it. The closet will only hold one. Ours are the larger size that has a 50 lbs weight limit. • The rain shower sprays into the tub, which is where I want stand because of the water pressure but can’t cause the tub is in the way. • Towel rack is in shower kind of hard to reach, then there’s a hook for one towel in the separate toilet area...strange. • Glass windows looking out are dirty and need cleaning. • Elevators to ground floor, to room floors and to top floor bar is very confusing. We stayed for 5 days and still couldn’t figure it out. I’m not old either and my memory is pretty sharp. • I used the gym, again temperature in there was super hot with no air flow. I had to ask to have the temp turned down so it would be cooler. After 10 minutes it started to feel a little cooler, then the smell of cigarettes smoke flowed in through the air vents. So much for a healthy work out. • Gym has refrigerator for cold bottle water. But there’s no cold water in there, as I used the gym twice while staying there and checked the frig twice so it must be broken. • Went up to the 68th floor bar/lounge. Nice place but bartender was rude. My husband went up to the bar counter to order a straight vodka martini. We waited 40 minutes, so my husband went back up to follow up. The bartender didn’t even make it yet and didn’t seem it care. I honestly think he forgot and was busy making others drinks. We asked if there was a manager on duty and he said no. So we just left. To tired to even complain cause we just checked in that night on Feb. 7. • View on 68th floor bar/lounge has the most beautiful skyline views. But there’s a film on all the windows with snowflakes that blurs out the views completely. So strange as it ruins getting a clear view that this beautiful city has to offer. These are the details that stood out. I don’t think we’ll be staying here again as there are other options in Shanghai. But it does have beautiful views. I was quite disappointed because it came recommended to me, had 5 star rating and I read others reviews before booking. My advice, don’t book a hotel because it was recommended by a local. Your standards may be different than theirs. Happy travels folks.
I fell in love with this hotel when researching a trip to Shanghai. It is beautiful from top to bottom, the fish tank, the decor, the pool, hot tub, and jazz bar. This is easily one of my most favorites, the location is perfect. People’s Park was right outside my window and that was a fun place to explore but the hotel is located at the start of Nanjing Road pedestrian street and you can walk that all the way to the Bund. I was traveling on my own and felt completely safe. Benjamin Zahn is doing an amazing job with this place and I can’t wait to go back.
The Hotel it self is very beautiful and the staff efficient and polite. The problem I had was that there is major construction being conducted which was not mentioned at the time of booking, this meant that the Reception was on a higher level, and also to get to our room we had to use two different sets of lifts, which made it very confusing.
