I recently stayed at the Ascott during a business trip to Shanghai. Our experience was better than most that are described here. Staff was friendly and our room was fine. However, I do agree with most others that posted here, the hotel is in need of an update.
This falls well below expectations for the price. They are simply charging for the location. My unit has very dated furniture and decor. The breaker panel buzzed non-stop intermittently during my stay. I came home one day and the apartment smelled of mildew, when it was completely fine when I left. Did I mention I got athlete's foot from the shower? As others have mentioned, the breakfast is awful. The coffee is particularly bad. Notwithstanding the 80 degree days during which the room temperature exceeded 75 degrees Fahrenheit, I was told there was no air conditioning. My unit was a "Premier" apartment but I don't understand why. TV reception was terrible too. I will never stay here again and I do not recommend it for any extended stay.
Ascott, in my previous experience, was a higher class serviced apartment offering. However, this property did not live up to that expectation. Stayed in a 1bedroom Premier apartment. Advertised having 108-120m2 floor space, it is unclear how the space is measured, as the internal available space was below 70m2. Furniture are very aged, scratched and extremely well used. Decor is outdated. The wall adjoining the shower in the hallway was completely rotten - assuming from years of leaks. The location was good however. The breakfast served was just ok. I will not be re-booking the property.
Having stayed in the new Ascott in Singapore, we had higher expectations for this hotel. We stayed for nearly 8 weeks after relocating and before finding our new apartment. We found the cleaning to be less than average (the staff were not very thorough) and the two bedroom apartment was decorated with slightly outdated furniture and appliances. The gym, restaurant and lounge were of good quality.
Ok this is going to be harsh but I feel it is necessary. This hotel is dated and old, nothing has changed in years (and I have been here for a few). The staff don’t care anymore - they put long standing guests in the rooms facing the construction site that operates 24/7. Oh yes there is a construction site at the back of the building that operates 24/7 so if you want to sleep then ensure your room is not on the side facing Yangzhong Park. The breakfast is consistently awful - go out for a real breakfast - Hogans in Xintiandi. Only good thing is they know how to make a good Aperol Spritz in the bar at night - whew something good. So good (not great) location for Xintiandi but not much else to redeem this old dear. Go to the Langham - more value for money.
We arrived and were given a room with a kitchenette. I called the front desk to change room because the smell of the last guest was nauseating. this was worse than a smoker smell. They changed the room for us, but it was not much better. We decided to stay and spray perfume. Breakfast is not good. Room temperature was very difficult to adjust. We should have continued our stay at the Marriott. This hotel was expensive and not worth it.
Hotel looks great unfortunately terrible housekeeping. checked in to the hotel and found a men's underwear underneath the chair. Reception girl was nice enough to change the room straight away, the shower lotions were different to the previous room though, seems cheaper not sure why not the same. water doesn't seem to flow fast enough in the shower/sink. Also underneath the sink the floor seems to be very dusty, not sure if it ever gets cleaned. Pretty much nothing interestimg to watch on the TV, and theres not even a HD channel at all. Last night staying here and had a long working day, found a pillow cover left behind on the desk triggered this review. Overall place looks great but they can't hold the standards even for a 3 stars hotel.
I stayed at this Ascott for 3 months while working in Shanghai and overall my experience was pleasant. Here are some pros and cons to consider when looking at this location from longer term standpoint. Pros: - amazing staff, truly kind and friendly and ready to help in any way they can - location is A++++, could not ask for a better commute just about anywhere in Shanghai - pool and sauna are clean and well maintained - gym open 24/7 and decently equipped - great deal of shopping available at your doorstep essentially (including a BOC branch in the basement which is a huge plus) - Highline restaurant in the building offering room service (while steeply priced it was always delicious) Cons: - aircon system is terrible. my room was so humid even with AC on that several of my clothing items went moldy. do ask for a dehumidifier at the desk if checking in during summer months! - weird smell coming through vents - outdated and uncomfortable furniture - basically non-existent wifi (this was a major bummer as I was here for work so I had to often resort to hot spotting off my mobile which was working at 2G speed and still faster than wifi provided - they really need to do something about that) - some of the floors include private apartments and people smoked in them thus smoke will seep into your room if you're on one of those floors (I was on 26th floor so maybe ask for a room that isn't located there if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke) Overall I feel like I paid what I paid for the location which was truly excellent. The apartments could stand an update especially to the furniture which was like a torture to sit on. WIFI needs to be updated, please, there were so many nights I wanted to cry because I was already exhausted and needing to meet a deadline but work was taking me 2x as long because the wifi was so slow. Staff however should never change, they were amazing and super accommodating which made the stay pleasant. I would definitely return to this location for short stay, not so sure about long term though especially if it was for work again.
Went with family, good location for family with malls around for (very nice but ex) bread & breakfast choices. Linked to a mall with 24/7 convenience shop & various restaurants to choose from. Walking distance to xintiandi and it helps with the cold weather that made the walk even more enjoyable.
I was staying initially 5 nights at the hotel. It’s was the 3rd time i was staying there. It’s well place and has all necessary amenities in and around. This time i unfortunately lost my passport and they have been so supporting and comprehensive to help me with all the complexity it requires to have new one and the visa. Many thanks to Billy and his team at the reception. So great in helping solving this issue. I will continue going to this place every time I’m traveling to Shanghai
