We stayed here for DBB with cream tea. Checked in at 2 and had cream tea at 2.30. We used the pool and sauna which was small but adequate. Dinner at night had good choices healthy and steak stones or a la carte. I had bread, cous cous and veg and meringues. Hubby had chorizo salad, meatballs and chocolate torte, shared wine. Off to the bar for a nightcap. Our room Darnhall was large and spacious. Breakfast was good and everything you could want. Staff were all so helpful and lovely which made the stay even better.
Second visit to Barony and I must say it was even better!!! Great service from every staff member we came in contact with. Check in was busy when we arrived but both receptionists were fast, polite, informative and efficient!! Rooms clean as expected as were all areas of the Hotel. Hotel was very busy but again you didn’t need to worry waiting to be served or get your food or drinks. Dinner was fantastic, I had the ‘steak on a stone’ good interactive and fun eating PLUS you get to cook your steak the exact way you want (cuts out any complaints! Nice touch!) Breakfast was busy and was self service with staff on hand replenishing everything quickly. Delicious and loads to choose from (cold and hot options). Staff genuinely look as if they are happy at their work and coming for a long hospitality background this is a massive bonus!!! We have visited and stayed in and around Peebles many times and the Barony tops all hotels in the area so far. Accommodation, Bar and Food prices are VERY competitive in price!! Well Done!! Thank You again and we WILL be back!!!
This is a good example of a modern well run budget hotel, good for weddings, groups and bus parties. Well spread out, with many of the bedrooms along long corridors. Bedroom a bit spartan,but acceptable at this price range. Upgrades are available. Spa facilities, which we did not use. Good conservatory for use in warmer weather. Otherwise there did not seem to be a sitting area other than the bar, which was of good size. We were pleasantly surprise both by the menu and the excellent food of high standard which followed. Staff well trained and friendly. A good choice of hotel for those, like us,who are not fussy about the bedroom,but who do like a good meal at the end of the day. Quiet situation, with good, if rather muddy, walks up the hill at the back.
I've stayed here a few times and have always enjoyed it. The bedrooms are tired but the reception and bar are lovely. The food in the bar and restaurant is superb and well worth booking in for. The pool is small but well kept - just avoid in school holidays!
Had an overnight stay in early February - what can I say? Wow, what a great hotel! The room was very spacious and comfortable, all the staff were very welcoming but it's the food that really makes Barony Castle first class. From delicious afternoon tea to 'steak on a stone' for dinner, to a hearty breakfast, Willie Thomson, the Executive Chef should be very proud of himself and his great team of chefs.
When you think of a castle, you think of a luxurious place with all that comes with it. We checked in on room 206, this was a room that was not refurbished yet. It was totally of an unacceptable level. We were ready to check out without having spent the night. The gentle lady at the reception saw our disappointment and acted very well by offering us an upgrade. The upgrade was a refurbished suite that was really cool! The major point why I would not recommend it, is the fact that the bed was really small for two people (140 cm) and the fact that you could feel the steel spirals of the bed whilst lying on it. The castle needs a really good make-over, as some elements were very sloppy, like the old paintwork that was falling of. The staff was really friendly and nice. The diner was really good. We spend some time at the lounge playing chess. We had the opportunity to meet some really friendly Scottisch people, that made our stay better. The surrounding hills are spectacular. I would not go back if the state of the castle remains the same. If they manage to refurbish it in a good way, I would want to go back.
Visited the Mercure Peebles Barony Hotel from Saturday until Monday for a wedding. a great hotel for holding a wedding, The staff were excellent nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were lovely and clean and very cosy. The food in the restaurant was first class Food for evening meal and for breakfast was great, a large choice of everything. Also they have great leisure facilities. We had a great time, so good we have booked for another stay in May.
When we arrived around 5pm the reception area was empty, no staff, phone ringing and we waited and waited, we listened for voices to give us an indication of where we should perhaps go to seek a human being when a receptionist appeared and did apologise for our wait! We checked in and the receptionist was warm and friendly and explained all. We went up to our room on the 2nd floor and oh my goodness squeaky floor?! This was a creaky squeaky floor like no other, every step and movement could probably be heard by the rooms on either side because we heard their creaky squeaky floors! Worse was to come but I’ll review the dinner on the first night first! The food was fresh, tasty and well presented. The service was good and the waiting staff friendly and professional. Highly recommend dinner. But the first night with the creaky squeaky floor was set to become even worse because the four poster bed was creaky squeaky too and the mattress was like sleeping on wooden blocks! No let me rephrase that, like laying awake on wooden blocks. Each time either of us moved the bed creaked, loudly! Around 2am I was becoming quite desperate for sleep and actually wanted to go home. This was supposed to be a relaxing two days away and so far I had not felt very rested! After breakfast the next morning, which was probably more suited to bus tours, I went to reception and asked if there was another room we could move to and explained the problem. The receptionist was extremely helpful and very quickly found S an alternative room for our second night. When we walked into the new room not only was it a lot less creaky but the bed was a king size and the size of the room was more like the size and layout we had expected on arrival, it was described as a suite but it was just a large well laid out room and had a small fridge which came in handy. I know I have waffled a bit but the hotel wasn’t quite what I expected, the staff were extremely helpful, friendly and professional and make most of the problems disappear. A bus tour did arrive on our second night so I was right about the breakfast!! But hotels have to cater for everyone in order to survive and if that means bus tours then so be it! I would have liked to have had table service for the tea/coffee/toast at breakfast but it was all self-service, except the cooked dishes but you would have had to catch a member of staff to order it! I don’t think I would return but that’s not for any reason other than I’m unlikely to be in that part of the country for a while.
Returned to Barony Castle for a 4th time and found that it was even better value than before. The bedrooms have been freshened up and the dining experience was superb. The `steak on a stone` is a must to try at dinner. Chef Thomson provides an excellent choice of menu for all tastes. At breakfast there is a wide range to choose from of either hot or cold selections. The leisure facilities are extremely well looked after, and the hot stone massage is definitely recommended. Staff are very pleasant, courteous and helpful. Also it is an excellent Hotel for taking your dog, suitable accommodation within your own room, and plenty of walks around hotel for walking the dog. Looking forward to our next visit. Great place to base yourself for exploring the Border Towns.
We had stayed here before but the previous experience was much happier than this time around. The welcome was frosty at best and the allocated room had ripped / peeling wallpaper. The room was changed for one where the bathroom smelt of wet dog. The hotel is dog friendly but I'd prefer not to smell the previous guests pooches! The grounds were in good shape and the breakfast was good. Don't know that there will be another visit.
