Fantastic - from the welcome from Kris to the wonderful open covered porch and beautiful pool
My husband and I have been fortunate to travel to Aruba six times. We’ve rented condo’s and homes. This home is the absolute best by far. Comfortable, beautiful breeze, sunny pool area, great lighting around the pool at night and the best host ever. Kris met us a Jay’s Car Rental which was the one he recommended. Best car rental by far, they picked us up at the airport and we were quickly given a car and were out of there within 10 minutes. It is also the least expensive rental we’ve had ever in Aruba. Kris took us to the retreat and we put our luggage in our rooms. He then took us for a cold beer, his favorite grocery store where we bought beer and scotch. Kris told us the best restaurants and beaches. He also surprised us with four wonderful chicken and beef kabobs which we cook on the grill that night. What a fabulous way to start our three weeks in Aruba. Kris took us to his special places in Aruba and we totally enjoyed hearing about the history of the Arubian people. You will not have a better experience! We’re coming back to stay at the Retreat next year! Thanks so much Kris and also to his house keeper Tina who helped us book some restaurant reservations. We had a fabulous time!

Just OK
Owner Kris and his assistant property manager Raul were available and generally responsive. Nice people! My group (family members and friends) were just "OK" with the place. I myself liked staying in a mostly-locals neighborhood with a nice pool area. But having a car is a must as the closest swimming beach is a good 15 or 20 minute drive away. My son liked the location as he could in 15 minutes be at Boca Grande, a good kiteboarding spot. The property itself is "tired" and lacking in numerous ways. We rented the downstairs unit. The ONLY warm water (whether for washing dishes or bathing) is in one of the two bathrooms. Furniture throughout the unit is worn and stained. Some appliances need replacing (toaster, microwave). We had to purchase our small Igloo cooler ($50 US), bath mats to avoid slipping in shower, fly swatters, all condiments (not even salt and pepper were provided), a lighter for the gas stove. There's a big old school boom box in the living room (who has cassette tapes anymore?) and when you walk in the front door the first thing you see is a broken glass cover of the fuse box with a note: "Do not touch." Window coverings throughout need replacing (venetian blinds in terrible condition). Only one TV in the 3 bedroom unit, and channels are limited. Beds were VERY comfortable and the room air conditioners work great. So, in summary, if you are expecting the Taj or something upscale, this is NOT the place. If you can deal with basic living, it's fine.
Kris was an excellent host. A few things needed attention and he responded quickly. It had everything we needed for a staycation. Although it was in a neighborhood in the south end, there were great restaurants nearby, beautiful beaches just minutes away and a walking trail. We loved our stay
I don't even know where to begin. From the moment we landed it was effortless, we reached out to Tina and she met us and we followed her to the property, driving through the neighborhood I knew which house was our because it was EXACTLY like the photos listed. We arrived, it was beautiful and exactly what we had envisioned from the photos inside and out. Tina gave us a tour, showed us how things worked, answered any questions we had and even downloaded the app Kris recommended we use while in Aruba to communicated with others on the island. There isn't anything I would have changed with the setting if it was my own and there wasn't anything I wish I had because it was all there ( plenty of towels, pillows and SPACE we were a family of 5 with 2 teenagers lol) including a decorated Christmas tree!! The one thing I wanted that I didn't have I messaged Tina and asked her if she had one and she brought it to me the next day for our outing. We all loved the place, and we really enjoyed Tina when she would come over to tend to the pool , tidy up the deck and check on the property, we would talk, laugh and our girls would share their adventures with her. By the end of our trip she felt like family! We left her a note and a gift when we left, she took the time to thank us through the app while we were in the airport. We cant wait to return to be able to stay at Kris' property and see Tina again!!!! Kris your property is perfect and your project manager (Tina) is AMAZING!!!! Thank you , we had a wonderful stay!! -Nola-

Great place to stay!
Away from downtown, but not too far for an occasional night out at some really good local bars on the edge of town. (Go to Arubaville, and the West Deck, great food and drinks) Kris wasn't able to meet us, but made sure someone did. Comfortable quarters, nice pool, clean kitchen, fresh linens, great patio to sit on and read to catch the breeze. Only 10 minutes from Baby beach, try Big Mama's while you're there.

A fantastic location AWAY from the more touristy areas
We've learned our lesson! We're staying on this side of the island on all future trips! We have found ourselves drawn to Mangel Halto, Baby and Roger's beaches on each trip, but we spent over an hour (round trip) getting to our favorite spots each day. The entire island is beautiful, but Mangel Halto's beauty is unmatched. Roger's beach is often just you, the sand and the water and Baby Beach provides GREAT snorkeling and is a spot where you can literally spend all day in the bath like water. Chris's meticulously kept home is in the perfect spot. There are 4 grocery stores within 5 minutes of the house which is in the quiet neighborhood across the street from Mangel Halto, and about 2/3rds closer to Baby and Roger's beaches. I spend far more time relaxing this trip instead of driving and never had to deal with the constant detours from road construction in Oranjestad.
As far as the house itself, we loved it! Each of the three bedrooms are separated from each other and all three couples truly felt like they had their own space. And when we have a larger group, we can just get another unit. The kitchen is well-equipped and is adjoined to nice dining room complete with a wine rack, wine carafe and a place to mix drinks. There were several hammocks to relax in and the constant breeze made it very relaxing. We went out to eat once at our traditional place, the Flying Fishbone and had no desire to go out the other evenings. We were comfortable in the house, the multiple gas grills allowed us to prepare whatever we wanted and we saved a boat load of money by doing so.
Take time to chat with Chris about the area. His love and knowledge of the island is impressive and he's just a super guy! I hope you enjoy his place as much as my family did. Until we buy a place of our own, if Chris's Hideaway is available, then that's where we'll stay.

The Hideaway- a great home for your holiday!!!
We had a wonderful stay at the Hideaway. Kris Capes, our host, met us at the airport and just took over as our unofficial guide. Kris made us feel so very welcome and was a wealth of knowledge about the island and the many activities and restaurants. The house was very clean and well equipped with bath and beach towels. The pool was wonderful for those times when the kids wanted something to do while waiting for supper. We also had great food at Marina Pirata and The Flying Fishbone which are both close by car. There is also great snorkeling close to the Hideaway at Mangel Halto. There are several grocery stores just on the main road not far from the house. You definitely need a car to really be able to see so much more of the island. The drinking water is excellent and none of our family of 5 had any incident either from home or any of the restaurants. We ate salads, fruit and all the fish and seafood possible. We spent 14 days in Aruba and are looking forward to our next visit.
