Very nice, guarded resort. But beware - the beach is a very long walk down (and then, of course, up again) a very huge hill. The hike wore us out easier to get a taxi to town, which was very nice.

Nice hotel, the restarant has a beautiful view ! There are 3 pools! One of them is super close to the beach!

Amazing Ocean View, confortable rooms, good swimming pool. Need a little care about building maintence.

I can tell you... it does not worthy!, You think it´s a beautiful resort... Well, nature there is perfect. That´s the good thing. Staff is really bad! They charged us 2x our 150 dollars New´s Year Dinner... And said it was a mistake! Things like that happened a lot... We almost had a fight to have a small minibar at our room, because they said there was none anymore... We spent 12 days asking to fix the safebox... It was not fixed, so we didnt had it. Pools are always dirty. We were 3 people but only 2 towels were given each day, so we needed to ask for the 3rd one every single day... If you go dont´ stay at the beach... there are employees who use to work at late night (I mean 3 or 4 am) next to your place... it´s weird because they dont tell you... So you wake up in the middle of the night with a guy at your window and it´s normal!!! Tissues, linens not always dirty. Get your own toillete paper because sometimes they forget to put it for you... Ok, breakfast is nice and some people who work there too... But definetely, I would not recommend... because you pay for something you won´t get! And Ocotal is far away everything... I suggest you yo be around Tamarindo or Playa Grande... We had a 4x4 rented car, but needed to travel around 1 -2 hour everyday to go to other nice playas... total 2-4 hours driving per day...

They gave us a king bed for four people, when we booked two doubles. The jacuzzi, the ice machines, the lights, everything was broken! The restaurant staff was friendly, but the chef refused to prepare half the menut. Our room floor was filthy, and the beds were as hard as a rock. To get to the beach was challenging from the hotel. There was no where near the hotel to purchase anything, you had to drive a long ways. When we requested compensation because of the fact everything was broken and because of the terrible service we received, they told us that was not possible, so they gave us a free dinner. At that free dinner, they couldn't prepare what we wanted (they said they ran out of ingredients) and refused to give us dessert. An all around SUB-PAR hotel.

swim up bar was not open , gym was not open for whole stay

This hotel needs some lovin'! Chips in the tile floor of our room, the ice machine by our room didn't work (so we had to hike it to the one up a steep hill from our room), and the hotel restaurant was often out of items. On the upside, the staff was friendly, the location felt very secure, and the pools were nice for watching the sunset. We didn't go down to the beach because the water didn't look healthy. There were much nicer beaches to visit in Costa Rica, I don't think I'd go back here.

We really liked the location of the hotel as it was a short cab ride ($6 each way) to the town nearby (Playas del Coco) where we could experience different restaurants and shops. The resort had great views and the black sand beach of Ocotal was nice. The breakfast was simple but good. The only other meal we had at the restaurant was pizza and it was excellent. We paid a little extra to stay in the bungalo and would definitely recommend it. We had a nice private patio with a small pool outside our room that we enjoyed. We stayed in 210, which was right in between the restaurant/main lobby and the beach, which was convenient. The room was very spacious. The beds were comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. The staff at the resort was very nice, helpful and always smiling. We knew going into this vacation that the resort was not five star, so it met our expectations. For example the bathrooms are not modern or fancy. We would recommend this resort to others who are looking for an alternative to the all inclusive resorts, where you can experience the culture, town, and excursions on the vacation.

Ocotal Beach Resort is far from a resort status. Rumor has it, the hotel is up for sale, and it looks like the owner has not kept up with basic repair. The service was poor. I was very disappointed.

Ocotal Beach Resort was a great way to end a wonderful 2 week vacation, we stayed here, because it was only a half an hour away from the Liberia airport, and wanted to stay on the coast before our early flight out. Although the resort is a little worn, it certainly has charm, and amazing views! If you want a 5 star, with all the amenities, and no costarican authenticity, stay at an all inclusive! Enjoyed the stay!

if you are not looking for 4 seasons enclosed compound, this is perhaps the best and most picturesque place in Costa Rica.

Hightly recomended - Best value for your money if you are not looking to be pampered. Dive shop is one of the best in country. Father Rooster was a recommended place to eat on another review I read but was not all that ----- Hermosa has better .

Initial impressions are that you ARE in a 4 star resort, though you can see the wear on this once nice place. There are two security checks to get in and the weather was nice so we slept with the patio doors open...mistake. Somehow a beach bum sneaked up the path from the beach and grabbed our cell phones and everything on the floor into my roommates bag. Though our big money and passports were in the safe, he managed to get away with a couple hundred dollars. Our contributory negligence notwithstanding, the hotel offered nothing in aide or comfort, much less compensation. In fact, the collect calls to the bank to arrange for more funds showed up at check out as $150 for two calls. I could see where someone would have a great time here, we just couldn't, so I won't recommend the resort The food and drinks in town were neither great nor cheap. The ocean was affected by 'red tide' preventing swimming, snorkeling or recreating at all on the beach for the smell. I got certified to dive there, and the crew was perfect. Completely honest, patient and very friendly. I'm not interested that this review gets posted or not, SOMEone has to have bad karma once in a while and I think both they and we were experiencing it at the time.

While this hotel provides a wonderful view, its extremely remote location and lack of activities left us disappointed. If you are looking for a place relax by the pool, this may be the place for you (but the pools, as well as the grounds could be better maintained). If you are impressed by the "oceanview rooms" be warned that his hotel sits atop a very large mountain and that the beach is a long (hot) walk down and back up very steep slopes to get to the very narrow, rocky beach. Additionally, the black sand looks pretty, but it is extremely hot and it is a sticky sand, so it is not a good spot for laying out. Nearby, Coco Beach is a much bigger beach with nicer, smoother, cleaner sand but it will cost you $6 taxi fee each direction from the hotel. Overall, the view was beautiful, but this definitely should not be considered a "resort", and is not recommended for those seeking excitement, variety, or entertainment--if you are looking to hide away, this may be the place for you.

The views from all rooms was amazing! Staff was extremely hospitable, knowledgeable and eager to please. Everything was as we expected. The tour company located at the resort (Mardigi Tours) was outstanding! They go above and beyond on their tours with competitve prices. Will definitely recommend to anyone planning a trip to the Guancaste area of Costa Rica! Thank you Ocotal Beach Resort and Mardigi Tours!!

The resort is definitely a little old and in need of some re-furbishing but the location was great due to the tremendous views. One major negative is the walls are paper thin and if you have noisy neighbors that could be a problem. Breakfast buffet was pretty good and we had many of our meals at Roosters which is on the beach and not connected to the hotel. If you like to fish....go for the Pez Gallo (roosterfish) since this is a great location to catch them.

Had a great time relaxing at Ocotal Resort with my girlfriend for a week. Staff was helpful and mostly fluent in English. The views were fantastic, well kept grounds with iguanas, coatis, and some beautiful birds roaming around. We had a suite which was large, clean and comfortable. This resort is a couple of miles from Coco and kind of limited as far as dining options within walking distance but only a $6 taxi ride to Coco. The beach is down a steep hill which was sometimes a long haul back up after a few cocktails, but a shuttle service is available.

The view from the top pool!To my left is a cove with black sandy beaches that become rocky running up to the mountains. My front view is the beautiful blue Pacific with far off mountain peaks. To my right is a stunning cove with a black sandy beach and the cove is dotted with fishing and sail boats. I could go on forever about this stunning resort.I looked at other much more expensive resorts but nothing could touch this if for sheer beauty alone!

Ocotal Beach Resort is a nice and comfortable hotel. His location on the top of a hill gives an incredible view on the Pacific Ocean and Ocotal Bay. The rooms are nice and clean. The pools and spas are just great. And the food at the restaurant is good as the staff is nice and polite. So I don’t have anything else to say than I had a great experience and a nice peaceful stay at Ocotal hotel.

my wife and I were on our honey moon and we absolutely have no complaints. The room was great, they catered to our every need. The view was perfect; we had an ocean view and a direct site to seeing the sun rise and the sun set each day. Our room location couldn't have been any better for us. I will say that you are surrounded by nature. That's a beauty in and of itself, but not everyone is nature friendly. But we loved our stay and our room and the staff were very nice people and service driven. Excellent hotel.
