History of Glendevon

Although we're not sure exactly how old Glendevon is precisely we have a documentary records dating from the early 19th century up to the present day
We know that the cottage has been inhabited by a succession of families working in seafaring and mining - industries and occupations of importance to the local area. Glendevon is a genuine fishermens' cottage
The profession of Master Mariner features in the ownership records commentary - a Master Mariner was the highest qualification possible in the Merchant Navy
Local Staithes names are connected to the cottage - Ward - Shippey - Crooks - Theaker
In 1861 Glendevon had 3 residents - this had risen to 8 in 1871 and included a young girl as a house servant - Sarah Crooks, and a lodger Ann Theaker
In 1881 one of the sons of the household Matthew Ward was at sea and is recorded as serving on the 'True Love' a fishing vessel from Whitby manned by Staithes fishermen
By 1911 Matthew was in the fish business on his own account as a Hawker owning his own horse and cart. It is not hard to imagine Matthew shouting his wares on 'The Staithe' then delivering orders by horse drawn transport to local villages
The cottage is heated and features a kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a patio, and there's space to spread out with 2 bedrooms. Guests can expect to find free WiFi and a TV with a DVD player. Other standard amenities include a washing machine, a fireplace, and a fenced private yard. Housekeeping is available on request.

Everything about our stay at Glendevon was excellent. First class communications from the owner and entry was simple and straightforward. The cottage itself was simply wonderful and such a brilliant location just a few steps away from the harbour and the awesome Cod and Lobster pub. Plenty of space and very well appointed and lovely and warm too for our February stay. So warm in fact, that we didn't need to use the open fire, which was a shame but we will have to come back when it's colder! We highly recommend a stay at Glendevon Cottage.

The cottage was cosy and had everything you needed. Would benefit from a full size ironing board as the one they have is to small and awkward to use. Kitchen a little bit tired looking but still managed to cook breakfast. Ideally located round the corner from the Cod and Lobster but book in advance if you want a table otherwise you’ll be waiting a bit. All in all would stay again. Thanks Anne.

We enjoyed our stay at Glendevon! Such a great location very close to the sea front, the cottage had everything we needed and was larger than it looked in the photos, especially the kitchen. We'd highly recommend!

Lovely little cottage with everything you need for a weekend. The open fire was lovely and so atmospheric. Beds are comfy and very cosy. So close to the pub and the sea. It was a wild stormy weekend so we fell asleep to the sound of the waves and wind which was ace. We would love to come back and stay for longer.

It was a lovely warm house. The size of the kitchen was anice surprise and the utility was great for putting boots and coats in. Just a few thoughts. Towels provided were a bit thin and worn. New towels would be good. Proper mattress protectors would be nice. You never know who slept on it before you. The downstairs bathroom has a drains smell but that is probably not an issue that can sorted easily. Overall lovely house in fab location

Beautiful Cottage - shame about the weather

Lovely little cottage and perfect location - unfortunately the first two nights were freezing but that is nothing to do with the host!! BUT more wood would be good in bad weather. This was the perfect cute cottage and I'd love it to live in full time!!

Great stay

Just had a 3 night stay. The cottage is very well located with the sea and pub within a few yards away. Anne (the host) was very responsive and provided all details. The cottage was actually better than the pictures do it justice, new sofa and decor etc - Welcome pack was a nice touch and would definitely stay again.
