Appalling weather didn't help but the room was hardly spectacular and the bathroom was very small. The minibar was poorly stocked . Luckily I was travelling on business so I was in late and out early which was probably a blessing. The restaurant looked good but sadly through my own fault I did not have the time nor inclination to try it. I may be doing the place an injustice but other than the reception staff, nothing impressed me.
The staff was very nice and welcoming. The room was spacious, with a great bed and the bathroom had a enormous bathtub ! I didn't eat dinner there but the breakfast was very good. The view from the dinner room is really nice and so is the terrace. Great hotel !
The hotel was clean but the staff was mediocre - some friendly and others rude if you were not Dutch. I requested laundry service and dry-cleaning to be completed on a Tuesday night and per the front desk / website, laundry and dry-cleaning would be prepared and finished by 7pm the following day (or same day if dropped off by 9am). My clothes were not ready the next night nor were they started. I called the front desk and they quickly told me that it would get done by the next morning (even though it was 8pm). The next morning my clothes were air-drying throughout the lobby. Other guests were walking to breakfast and passing my boxers, undershirts, etc. None of my clothes were dry and the clothes that I requested to be "DRY-CLEANED" were washed in a washer and now I have to purchase new clothes to replace them as they're ruined. ONTOP of all of this, the hotel still tried to charge me the 175 Euro fee for laundry. Will never stay here or recommend the hotel.
Returning to Deventer for a family celebration after a number of years, we wanted to make this trip one to remember and staying at the Ijssel enabled us to do just that. The location and setting are perfect: the hotel is the other side of the water from the busy, bustling town, which is reached by ferry. Therefore, it is bound to be more peaceful than if one stayed in the town. Also it is bounded on the other side by lush green parkland, which gives it an air of tranquillity. There is plenty of parking and this is free, which straightaway makes one feel good. I would rather pay slightly more for a hotel room that includes parking, than pay less and have the parking fee added. Inside everything is calm. The fixtures and fittings are minimalist and the place is decorated in muted colours. Nothing feels big and everything feels intimate. The receptionists are friendly and efficient. All of them speak English. Our room was on the second floor overlooking the park and the stairwells were light, due to the expanse of glass, and afford views across the water to the town. The room was not big, but it had a huge bed, bedside tables, small table, easy chair, wardrobe with hanging space and shelf, fridge and safe. The bathroom, which was well lit, comprised wet room/shower, toilet (of standard UK design and much better than many Dutch toilets) and wash basin. The wash basin was the only thing that let the room down (and not sufficiently to lose this hotel my five star rating). Whoever designed this basin must have had a weird sense of humour: there is no plug and so one has to wash in running water (not very eco-friendly) and there is a thin slit which allows the water to drain away from the sloping surface. To brush one's teeth or wash one's face, one has to bend one's head under a shelf (trying not to knock one's head). We have never seen anything quite so poorly designed! Back downstairs, the glass-fronted dining room is a delightful space. Sitting at one's table one can look across the water to the church tower and magnificent buildings. There is a choice of a set breakfast for 25 euros per person or one can choose individual items from the menu. We opted for the individual items, as we could never have managed the full set breakfast. Each morning, my husband had bacon and eggs with toast or bread (the Dutch don't seem to be big on toast), and I had yogurt, granola and fresh fruit, a very generous portion. We had tea to drink. The comfortable chairs and wonderful views meant one instantly relaxed and there was no sense of being rushed. The young ladies serving were quiet and efficient. Returning from Deventer or the nearby village where my husband's niece lives, we were able to have a walk around the park or sit on the terrace with a drink. We will definitely book this hotel for our next visit and would highly recommend it.
I enjoyed the stay very much. Nice rooms but a bit dark (small minus), very polite and professional service - they all were customer oriented and able to answer all questions willingly. Excellent area around and restaurant. Very good food and wine served by well prepered service.
The positives: great location, next to the ferry to get into town, spacious room ( type charm), friendly staff at the reception , free parking, nice terras to sit outside weather permitting. However they are trying very hard to be a top hotel but there is lot's of room for improvement: lots of very busy staff in the restaurant but difficult to get their attention, like waiting 10 minutes to order a drink. Coming down for breakfast and being told "find a table in the serre" where we find 2 tables taken and all the others were still not cleared and no tables ready, I had to asked to get a table set for us. Coffee served at breakfast that clearly had sat for a while being not really warm and a bit stale. The breakfast served at the table is expensive at €25 for what is basically a continental breakfast. Cooked breakfast options available ala cart. I had scrambled eggs and salmon on toast. No option offered for white or brown toast, and the srambled egg too dry. In a hotel of this price level ( we paid € 169/ night excluding breakfast) one would have expected coffee/ facilities in the room. Minibar not refilled. The constant upselling is so obvious that it gets irritating.
We had four rooms on a businesstrip to Deventer, and this hotel had a very good location, free parking and we made a short boat trip to the center of Deventer. Nice rooms, good beds, and a very tasty and pleasent breakfast. One of the best we have had on our trip.
Great hotel with a fantastic view on the river in the morning when the sun is rising. Dinner with colleagues was fantastic. A la carte dinner with a great selection. All food was well prepared and professionally brought to the table with each time some interesting explanation. This hotel is a recommendation when you visit the area
The location is very nice, the view on the city is beautiful and unobstructed. However, the location is mostly what you pay for. The room is too small: their is no chair at the desk (won't fit one either), the closet can't fully open because the desk is too close to it. You can't use the sink without spilling because they placed a large shelf directly above it. You can't fill a small bottle at the tap because it is to low. The bathroom is small in general, can barely sit at the toilet without hugging the wall next to it. There is a large mirror, which you can't stand in front of because furniture blocks this location. The bathroom door cannot fully open because it is obstructed by the room entry door. There is 1 low chair, placed at such a location that it obstruct 1 bed side, and if you move it, you can't use the drapes. There is no place to hang clothing, only in the closet that can't fully open.. Additionally there is a minibar that has a pretty annoying continuous sound too it. The breakfast was nice, the restaurant has a perfect view. However the eggs were not boiled (maybe a minute) and was completely fluid. When we requested a new hard boiled egg, we got some that were still mainly fluid, so we gave up and left to eggs floating around the dishes. In general the personal is friendly and the location is great, however, overpriced for the room facilities.
The Sandton is really lovely, nice and cozy rooms and an ideal location directly at the Ijssel. The bathroom is a bit to small, especially the washbasin is installed underneath the shelf, whrefore brushing your theets is a bit difficult. The quality of food is excellent, even though the breakfast could be extended for 25€. There are just some croissants and a choice of bread / joghurt. I think for 25€, there should be both.
