As the title says this was my second visit we enjoyed our stay so much the first time . This time we had the self catering unit , but still Charles kindly got us great fresh bread for breakfast , it was just as peaceful as the first time and again a quirky immersion into the French countryside . We took bikes and cycled around the local area which was just stunningly beautiful and the roads so quiet it was just a brilliant experience , Caroline and Charles gave us suggestions on the best routes , we will have to go back next year
We look for quiet places outside of villages and towns. Here we definitely found it! Quiet, charming old farmhouse, a little bit south of Auch. We were well taken care of by the owners, including the dog and the cat. A pleasant night sleep, cool, quiet and dark! And a good breakfast before traveling on.
very quiet weekend in the domaine good walking around berdoues and the small forest good restaurants around in mirande and in farm auberge and good breakfast a home with fesh eggs. massage with charles very good
We passed 12 restful days in Domaine a Marmande. We stayed in one of the two gites (fully furnished apartments). Our gite was cozy and charming: wood-burning stove, comfortable bed, complete facilities to cook "at home." We visited the other gite and two chambre d'hotes (bed-and-breakfast units): all were equally well-furnished, pretty, comfortable. The grounds show loving care; although well tended, they have an air of being free- butterflies, flowers, vines, bird song. There is a swimming pool, which we did not use, due to cool weather; however, we saw Charles, one of the owners, care for the pool every day. Marmande is an historic place; we cherished every minute of our stay, and felt embraced by a sense of peace and rest. Charles Aronson and Caroline van Berkel, the owners, are gracious and generous people. They love the Gers, and will share information about visiting the historic and enchanting towns and castles of the Gers. We have to go back to Domaine a Marmande, because we love this place, and its aura of rest and well-being.
Laid back BnB in the heart of some beautiful countryside. Booking at late notice Charles n Caroline graciously accommodated us in the main farmhouse in a family room upstairs. Like many other places in the locale the property has heaps of character and is a nice place to chill out whilst the kids enjoy the pool. Lovely little villages are nearby to explore and great eating opportunities too! If ur the type of person who needs their holidays sugar coated and scheduled to the very second, then this place probably isn't for you. I'm not and I'm glad places like this exist.
Charles & Caroline gave us a warm welcome to their B&B set in the countryside just a few kilometres south of Mirande. The room was comfortable with the unique bathroom being the main talking point (we were in the blue room). On arrival we were offered beer and wine that we took to sip by the pool - unfortunately the weather wasn't quite good enough to temp us to go in. Charles was a mine of information on how we might spend our time, where we might visit and where to find the best nearby places to eat. He even phoned the restaurants that we chose to make us a reservation - very helpful given our command of the French language! When we weren't out and about this was a quiet, relaxing place for us to recharge our batteries for the next part of our tour.
We had booked a week at this B&B in mid-July, expecting warm/hot summer weather in the south of France, only to be very disapppointed - as so many millions of other tourists all over France - to have had a rather cold and rainy week. Nevertheless we had a wonderfully relaxing week, exploring the surroundings (bastide villages) and visiting different sites (Auch, Condom, Lourdes etc.). Our hosts Caroline and Charles made sure that we felt welcome, Caroline preparing a wonderful welcome dinner for us on the day of arrival. We were able to sleep very well on very good beds and enjoy the delicious breakfasts prepared by Charles. A couple afternoons we were lucky enough to enjoy a bit of sun and relax reading by the pool. Although we were unlucky with the weather, we can imagine what a top place this will be when the weather is perfect, sunny and warm and we will definitely recommend this B&B for everyone who needs a getaway from their busy, hectic lifes and just wants to relax by the pool, reading, enjoying the nature around.
This region of France, in the Southwest, is called the "Tuscany of France". Rolling countryside, the land of ducks - canard and foie gras, other fresh produce, local cheeses and wines, outdoor markets, shopping, sightseeing. We have travelled all over the French and Itailan countryside on many occasions. This region is a little less touristy than, for example, Provence but with a lot of the same charm. The B&B owners wer very charming, warm, friendly, informative, and spoke fluent English (Charles is American, Caroline is Dutch and speaks perfect English). We had dinner there as well as breakfast. Caroline's pumpkin soup, made using the local pumpkin, with leeks, chunks of carrots and organic chicken broth, was literally the best pumpkin soup I ever had in my life. The place was cozy, quiet, in the country. If you like this type of relaxing vacation in the French countryside, this is the place for you.
Our visit to Domaine a Marmande was idyllic in every way--from the long driveway with beautiful farm fields on either side, to the spacious veranda from which we enjoyed the late afternoon sun with a glass of wine, to the delicious meals prepared by hosts Charles and Caroline, to the lovely walks , visits to nearby towns and chateaux--everyday was a delight to the senses. We were able to travel a short way and visit Lourdes and the Cathedral there; as well as the Pyrenees for a drive over the Col d'Espin; we spent a wonderful day in Saint Jean-du-Luz, bustling, charming town on the Atlantic ocean, with beautful vistas, lovely shops and terrific food. Charles and Caroline are incomparable hosts, able to assist us with any question or desire we expressed to complete our experience of their wonderful courtryside. The rooms are spacious, bright, comfortably appointed and beautiful. And we both slept incredibly well every night of our stay. I didn't have the opportunity to experience a massage with Charles, but look forward to doing so when we visit next time. Though I don't know when that will be, I am positive that it will happen! We had such a terrific time there and truly felt restored when we departed. I only wished that we could have stayed another week! KBH
We really enjoyed staying at Domaine a Marmande. We love local food and local wine very much, and they offered good stuff. We had delicious duck, local fresh vegetables and good wine. We love Ugni Blanc (white) and St Mont (rouge) as they recommended. They are very nice people, and they kindly recommended some good places for us to visit in South France. Thanks for their guidunce we enjoyed many good things there. In Mirande, we went to Monday morning "Marche" and purchased the local cheap wine by litter. Then, we went to a spa near Lourdes and we enjoyed the outside spa in the snow. It was fun. The spa is so warm and good. Thanks very much. Merchi. Theresa and Sammy
