Protea Hotel by Marriott Kruger Gate

We used our Marriott Points and stayed 3 nights for free at this very nice lodge. The viewing deck is by the bar, and although it was dark, you could hear the hippos as we enjoyed a glass of wine...kind of amazing, really. Our room was just moderate, but good enough, nice shower, nice bed. Outdoor corridors connected by wooden decks/walkways gave it a real lodge feel. We did not use the pool, but it looked quite average. The main Lapa Restaurant was a nice buffet with some items constant and others changing daily. The food was good, but we would have like a second on property restaurant choice for dinner. Protea Kruger Gate is a great value considering the location of the lodge, and we will surely stay there again.

We were pleasantly surprised by this lodge. The rooms are spacious and the furnishings were classy and comfortable. The food was included in our package and was the best we had on our trip to Africa Watching the monkeys stealing the packs of sugar off the tables and then climbing into the trees and laugh at us was a highlight of our trip. The staff was furious. You cannot find a better place to self drive Kruger. It is literally at the gate of the Paul Kruger entrance. The setting is swank but very African and I would stay here again.

I travelled here with a teacher's' group and it was amazing! Great food, lovely rooms and a great staff make it an excellent choice for doing Kruger safaris. It is also very local in character. I recommend it without hesitation.

The hotel is very nice (rooms, restaurant). So pleasant after a full day in Kruger park and so close to park entry. The diner outside is pleasant and prolongate the spirit of "safari". Rooms are quite big and allow you to spent a very good night! We did not use the night or morning safari, so no additional comments.

Great staff and a unique "lodge-like" environment complete with up close animal contact (monkey just stole part of my lunch while writing this, so you will be up close!). Accommodations are well appointed and meets Marriott standards.

We have been on a conference and everything was spot on. Clean rooms, wonderful setting with Stunning views and superb food. Staff were also very helpful. We just didn't want to leave and loved every minute!

This hotel is right next to the Kruger Gate and allows an opportunity to experience the most beautiful sightseeing places in Mpumalanga. It's a lot of driving, but driving that is worth it. Beautiful dancers and drummers performed at the hotel during dinner and my kids and I thought that was the best moment at the hotel. We were told that African dancers and drummers perform every Saturday. The staff is amazingly friendly and efficient. They wanted to make sure we leave satisfied and I was and still am. I will always go back to this hotel.

I stayed on night while attending a business workshop in the Kruger National Park. The room was average, the service and food was average but the price was exorbitant, although I understand that the rates for attendees at the workshop were somewhat discounted from the standard rack rate. I can only think that the location of this average hotel within a km from the Kruger Gate is the justification for the price which in my opinion is unjustified.

Beautiful self catering cabins with 2 bedrooms & a loft very comfortable with BBQ.facilities.Really enjoyed our stay.it is about a 3 min drive to the game reserve. We did self drive through the park & absolutely loved it.At the end of the day we came back to a beautiful meal at the restaurant & one night we had a BBQ.This was our second trip there

Located right outside a gate to the park - great place to start a self-drive game drive. Clean, comfortable bed, good service. Rate includes breakfast and dinner - since there is no other food source. Don't use Marriott points for a room - when you then pay for meals there is no savings.
